Who is keen for a Sydney Coffee Crawl?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
This is probably in the wrong section, but it wont let me start a new events topic. So sorry mods.

But just wanted to see who would be interested in a Sydney Cafe Crawl?

I am sure the logistics would be a challenge, trying to work out a day and time that suits everyone but thought I would throw it out there to see who bites. I know a few are keen at least.

So the questions are, what cafes would you like to see included and what day and timeframe would suit you the most?

I think wed prefer a Sunday too. I havent been to any of the good cafes people rave about in Sydney, so it would all be a good experience...eg. Campos and Mecca. I have been to Tobys Estate and not been disappointed there.

Only prob is that these range from Newtown to Woolloomooloo (do I have too many os in there?).

Would be great if we could plan it so that its logistically do-able. Could even stop in at the Lindt shop for a hot choc. ;)

I know that Campos is not open on Sundays and I also have my doubts about the Lindt shop (I stand to be corrected on that one though - things may have changed)...

Yes, Sunday is a good day but we would miss Single Origin, Artisan Focacceria, Campos & Mecca as they arent open on Sundays. There is also the Tobys Estate head office and roastery on City road in Chippendale which is a much better option than going to the one in Woolloomooloo (its easy to remember Dennis - sheep, toilet, cow, toilet!!).

Personally, Id suggest a start out at Grind in Cronulla, then we could head to the city and do the rest on foot. I am willing to share my car and also free parking spaces at my block of flats in Ultimo - can probably get about 4 other cars in without anyone noticing.

certainly the Martin Place one closes on Sunday but the one in Cockle Bay is open until 9pm most nights I think.

    Id be interested.
Having a quick read through 2007 Sydney Coffee Guide a number of the higher rated establishments are not open on Sundays.....
However from what I have observed with commercial Vs your own brew you could be surprised on the differential in flavour.

There is another possible tack for the suggestion - what about a limited number of interested CSers doing a rotation once a fortnight or month dragging their roasts and blends around at a different members house and getting to chat about something more familiar, getting to try different grinders and machines etc and see what surprises turn up?

    Hi all

I would particularly like a get together. It would be a good opportunity for us to try each other beans as trying to work out whats wrong with ones roasts by describing tastes via a forum is very difficult. We can also improve our espresso skills at each others places.

Naked and Speleo - I really think what you are proposing belongs in another thread.

Its not that I dont like your idea, in fact, it could easily happen at the same time as people pick up there beans following beanbay...we could even have brunch together! Hey, wait a sec...that sounds like what happened at our place yesterday. Everyone was invited. Where were you? ;) ;D

    I want a coffee crawl!!! ;D ;D

Re: Who is keen for a Sydney Coffee Crawl?

Sydney coffee crawl sounds like a great idea...BUT I would be rather terrified of the caffeine overload at cafe#3. Could go decaf or spit it out after a taste- I dont think that is in the spirit of things.

THe other way of doing things is meet at a different cafe every Saturday or Sunday. Coluzzi Bar on Victoria St must be good as never a seat inside and people sit on the kerb with their cups. Unlikely good places Ive been to include Berkelows book shop on Oxford St and "the arches???" or no names on Stanley St (the one with the pinball machines). IT would be funny to meet other coffee fanatics

There is also some sort of commercial Sydney coffee tour I saw advertised somewhere.....

You could always duck into a pub between cafes to wash out the taste.

Re: Who is keen for a Sydney Coffee Crawl?

So it looks like those interested in a crawl will best be suited to a Saturday in order for the cafes mainly being open on Saturdays. Maybe we should throw some dates around? For me the earliest I could do would be the 11th and as it is still soccer season I could only do a morning and leave the city at 12pm at the latest. 18th and 25th are out for me but come September I am free as soccer will be done for the season. So if others are interested for a Saturday the 11th cafe crawl I would be in. Any others?

We could be the guinea pigs and if it works out than we can spread the word.

It was actually just a suggestion, I am the only one it suits at this stage so it is not set in concrete.

There is hope for you yet.

August, yes. I would need to leave the city by about 12pm if I drive in though. So I would propose starting early-ish. Others could kick on if they wanted. After reading Lucas blog I was thinking of suggesting Cordial at Newtown for breakfast. That way a trip to Campos before preogressing to some of the city delights. But all thoughts at this stage as i know Grind was also suggsted as a starting point.

Grind is good, then we could go to Tidzs at the Park at Oatley (theyre using Single Origins stuff) and then onto the city? That way, the first "hop" wont be so large! I had a laugh!

I guess the tour company has to keep its liability down, lest customers have cardiac seizures, extended migranes etc due to caffeine overload.

Perhaps the best way to neutralize the caffeine is combine it with beer drinking as suggested by Robusto - would need to be a public transport trip then.

One idea for the day is to have a coffee snob award for the best Barista on duty during the crawl. To find a Barista on a Saturday that has time to care for the shot might be tough - may need to warn them that they are to about to shoot for a bunch of Coffee Snobs.

Brett, I eat breakfast at Cordial at least once a week and can thoroughly recommend it - I like this idea.

Although I was also suggested Grind as a starting point, so perhaps I should stop suggesting things!

Cordial is 130 Carillon Ave, Newtown. That was my suggestion as I know they have breakfast. Where Grind does not. I like Grind though when I have been there and they have a blend as well as SO running. Just to get it all out there so that people can put forward their informed opinions.

Re: Who is keen for a Sydney Coffee Crawl?

I am sure others will want to vote in the poll as well. There are 2 for 8am and 3 for 9am and 1 for 10am at this stage. So I would like to propose that those interested in breakfast would meet at 8am at Cordial and realisitcally it would be 9am by the time that nears to an end. Therefore the people keen for a 9am start can still meet at Cordial for a quick coffee before a jaunt towards Campos. This is all for the 11th of August. Sorry for those that it does not suit but hopefully next time. At least this way Scoota gets to come to one in Sydney, as it is not every weekend that Scoota is here.

For those who want to come later or meet part way through the crawl maybe you can just pm me and I will give you my mobile number to contact me to see where we are at. Unless you are a stalker in which case I wont give you my number ;)

Does this sound fair to those interested?

Maybe we can end up at Cronulla!? ;)

I know I voted for 9am but only because I think Ill be coming from out near Picton so I figured it would give me enough time to get there. But seeing as Im chronically up at 7am I suppose I could nearly make 8am at Newtown on a Saturday morning! Do you think? :o

You guys had just better pray for me that it doesnt rain! (otherwise, Ill be driving and not riding and so therefore will be slower!)

If the weather is anything like today Scoota, well be wearing shorts!

Picton to Newtown in an hour - depends on how many points you have left on your licence, though the duke could do it easy. Well listen out for you ;) (can you tell I miss riding?)

If you end up going to Cronulla in the arvo and you find that Grind is not open dont despair. The one opposite Northies closes early but there is a street off the mall where they have another store, which is open until 5pm. It is also a little larger for seating than the small one with the view.

You may already be aware of this but thought I would put it out there all the same.

Ill go vote now... thanks for organising coffeechaser!

Re: Who is keen for a Sydney Coffee Crawl?

Thought Id share some distance info for the Newtown locations...

If you start at Cordial, its a 3 minute walk to Campos (maybe less?) and then a further 15-20 min walk to Tobys @ Chippendale (I live pretty much exactly between Tobys and Campos!). From Tobys its a short walk to Broadway for buses into the city. As for parking, theres a combination of metered and non-metered parking around Cordial/Campos and pretty much free street parking near Tobys.

TG, I know a nice route from Campos, down Missenden road, through Sydney Uni and out at the corner of Broadway & City Road. Cuts out a lot of the distance and has lots of nice trees, a park, sandstone buildings and if were lucky we might see fairy wrens on the way through the Uni.
