Sunday we are open 10-2, hope you can make it up as that is the day Scott will be behind the machine at our place.

No, not competing. I am judging again this year and one of my baristi is entering. Its a last minute decision but good practice regardless of performance on the day - you have to start somewhere.

A very good days competition and the level of presentation was awesome. Well done to all the first time competitors, but Anne Cooper was triumphant on the day with Alex Forsyth a close runner up and Jesse Hyde taking out third spot.

A big shout out to Steve Novello for his time and energies to making today happen at very short notice.

Well done Anne and we will be seeing you in Melbourne.

Ill second Peters sentiments - all 7 competitors were professional and quite pedantic in technique (great to see). Some great signature drinks on offer as well - Annes espresso champagne sounded quite intriguing ...

Jason, pity I didnt get a chance to say gday - you were too enmeshed as technical judge.

All in all, a great day seeing some committed baristi showcasing their skills.

Re: AASCA - 2008 Qld Barista Championships

It was a great (and long) day.
As a judge I would like to comment on the following. The quality of barista continues to grow in Qld. The overall standard was very high and the competitors were making it very easy to technical judge as the standard of technique and attention to detail were very high. Would have loved to take my regular seat on the sensory table but had 2 clashes this year with a current and previous employee competing. Hopefully Ill get a sensory seat at Victorian champs now that Im accredited.

As a coach to a first time competitor, I would encourage all barista to get along to some jams and compete next year. My barista, Kate, was full of nerves, self doubt, and general "I dont belong here" thoughts. They all dissapeared as soon as she got behind the machine, and after a long ride home and a few drinks she was left very possitive about both herself as a barista and competing again.

It isnt that scary and is a good chance to push yourself and learn from each other.

Everyone should get involved next year. Between Pioneer and Di Bella there should be some regular barista jams happening before next years comp.

Sure, but you cannot argue their commitment to specialty coffee.

    Hi Tony

In defense of Di Bella - not sure if a presence on a forum is needed or not, but Di Bella is 100% committed to the growth and success of specialty coffee here in QLD and Australia.

Also, no-one else besides people like Jason were willing to help get the barista comp off the ground this year and Di Bella put their hand up to organise it. A lot of work goes into these things and they are long hard days - especially for the judges (as Jason will attest).

Anyway, I dont think Di Bella should be judged on whether they post on a forum or not.

Andy knows of my experiences here on this forum and I have been negatively spoken about by people on this forum. So one can understand no longer wanting to take part in this forum - but I did feel the need to defend a company that is doing the right thing as far as Specialty Coffee is concerned.

Also, QLD is way behind the other states as far as Barista Jams etc go and if people like Jason and Di Bella can improve this and get the rest of Australia to find out how many great baristas we have hiding in our cafes then I want to be a part of that. I do barista comps not because I think I am the best (because Im not) but because Im passionate about my industry and craft.

Anyway, hope to see you pop into the factory at Bowen Hills Tony!

    Cheers
    Anne *:)

Ive been to Phils factory numerous times over the past 4 years, because Ive been using Di Bellas Modena at my cafe for that amount of time! ;D

My comment wasnt aimed so much at judging Di Bella (being a long time user of his beans, I admire the passion & commitment to quality) but I spose more at imploring more baristi outside of Melbourne & Sydney, who use a diversity of specialty beans, to comment on this forum. A broader spectrum of views I think would enrich the forum. It kinda worked - you responded! ;)

Well done on the win BTW Anne - I was there watching & you were very polished & professional. ;) Good luck in Melbourne, & Ill say gday next time Im at the factory.

    Cheers,
    Tony

...and Andy is less than impressed!

Anne is a great example of someone with a true coffee passion that could teach most people here something if they wanted to learn. Heck, you only have to look at her username to work that out!

I think right now is a great time for everyone to consider the content of their posted messages BEFORE pressing the "post" button.

Congrats on winning the first of the state rounds Anne, it was the hardest because of the very short lead time and you obviously handled it well.

Your name is now proudly at the top of the AASCA ABC schedule on the forum!

dont let the turkey wannabes get at ya Anne ... Itd be a shame to see a talented barista not give her voice here ;)

Kinda ironic that you feel the need to defend Di Bella from a long-time customer! As said, my comments were made to invigorate a bit of baristi passion into the forum, NOT to damn Di Bellas contribution to espresso awareness ...

Re: AASCA - 2008 Qld Barista Championships

It was one of Annes open invitations to a CS/CG get together at Pioneer a couple of years back that got me out and experiencing coffee from a wider range of perspectives, with amateurs and professionals all mixing it up and having a great time. Thats where I saw demonstrated for the first time, popcorn popper roasting...

Alas these semi-regular get togethers have become much less regular recently, probably due to a number of factors. Anyway, it was always a pleasure to speak to Anne, Jason, Lukey, Ant, May and others at these occasions (whilst drinking copious amounts of fresh coffee thats been expertly prepared). Thats why Ill be trying to get to Pioneer this Sunday, even though I have a flight at stupid-am the next morning...

    Cheers,

    Mark.

Re: AASCA - 2008 Qld Barista Championships

I had a really great day on Saturday and I believe that is has shown that there is renewed interest in specialty coffee in Brisbane!

There are more AASCA initiatives being planned throughout the year to help in growing the barista/roaster network in Brisbane. Anne Cooper is a fantastic ambassador for QLD and will be in the mix for the finals in Melbourne.

Guys like Jason and Phil are putting themselves out there for the wider coffee community and they have my support!!!!

I look forward to being both personally available and also the full facilities of the Veneziano roastery & first pour when it opens in Brisbane in the few months.

    Keep it growing!

    Excellent - I live only 5 mins away :)

Are you planning to have roasting infrastructure on site, or is it just a distribution warehouse for beans roasted in Melbourne? Whens the grand opening?

Re: AASCA - 2008 Qld Barista Championships

We are planning on having the full SHA BANG in Brisbane as we do not wish to be the coffee company that roasts in one location and ships interstate. We much prefer to roast local... Kicking off with a 30kg roaster on site, training rooms, cupping studio, first pour espresso bar. Going to make sure that we have all the toys to play with... Oh FB80 and the usual variation of grinders and reverse osmosis water treatment.

We cant give an exact date to opening as we are still going through council on a few matters, nothing major tho...

Really looking forward to moving back to the home town and get some coffee rocking... You are all welcome to kick the tyres when we open... We will keep you posted.

    Yandinas screaming success

    Yandinas screaming success
    28 February 2008
    http://www.thedaily.com.au

Coffee-making has come a long way from a flat white.

Just ask head barista of Pioneer Coffee, Kate Clarke, who earlier this month gained statewide recognition with her Yandina Screamer – a cocktail type espresso beverage with a tantalising mix of ginger, macadamia, and chocolate.

The Screamer rated highly for Kate in the Queensland final of the Australian Barista Competition, boosting her into fifth place.

A first-time entrant in the contest, Kate was keen to introduce a unique local flavour into her signature creation.

“I got the ginger from across the road (at the Ginger Factory), the macadamias from next door, and the name comes from my love of cars as well,” she said. “Signature drinks are about looking for something that you won’t get anywhere else. This one’s different and decadent, just like me.”

The competition tests baristas’ skills, both technical and sensory, along with judging their professionalism, creativity and passion. Competing baristas make four cappuccinos, four espressos and four signature beverages.

Meanwhile, AASCA certified barista judge Jason Joffe, also of Pioneer Coffee, wants to encourage other Coast baristas to enter the contest and also give local coffee standards a lift by hosting free “barista jams” to exchange ideas and techniques.

“The aim of these competitions is to lift everyone’s coffee-making standards,” he said.

“I will be satisfied the day I can walk into any café and have a great coffee.

“At the moment I think there would be less than 10 on the Sunshine Coast where I would be happy with the level of coffee being served.”

Any baristas interested in local “jams” should register their details with Jason at Pioneer Coffee.

“The get together will be a place to discuss ideas, techniques, coffee, and hopefully put together a team that will travel to Brisbane and have barista jams with some of Queensland’s best baristas,” Jason said.

HaHaHa, the last place Id expect to see that would be here. Andy, youre not owned by APN are you? ;)

Yes, one of the perks of being the main source of motivation (ie the morning coffee as we are across the road) for the staff at one of the largest print press in SEQ is we cant do anything good without them writing an article. Good thing the Head of APN is an avid espresso drinker and comes in 5 times a day when he is in town.

Watch for Kate next year, Im not making predictions, but....
