Celebrate the Bean - Melbourne 2008

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight

The 2009 Event has just been announced.

    See: http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1228370360

    Celebrate the Bean
    Sunday 2nd March 2008, 11am-5pm
    Waterfront City, Docklands
    Melbourne

Yes, Celebrate the Bean is back and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever if for only one reason...

    COFFEESNOBS WILL BE THERE!

Yes, the rumours are true. *CS will have a two table display stand in the Origin Roasters Marquee and we will be showing the visitors the tips, tricks and joys of home roasting.

According to Melbourne Food and Wine:

Celebrate the Bean is a full-flavoured experience that captures the passion and interest of lovers of coffee and chocolate alike. It celebrates the culture and lifestyle of all things coffee and chocolate with a showcase of coffee blends by boutique roasters and coffee tasting, domestic machine display and demonstrations, coffee education workshops, a dedicated chocolate room and live music entertainment.

...but we know as CoffeeSnobs the place to be "seen" will be on our stand!

Currently Iím thinking of getting a few weird and wonderful home roasting devices to static display and then maybe have a couple domestic roasting appliances in action to show how home roasting is done.

We will also have a range of green beans to display so people can see what they look like and should do a couple of transition roasts to show the different stages.

Scoot suggested a notebook and NextG card so we can have the site live on the stand too.

So, who wants to participate? *What ideas do you have for the display? *What else should we do?

Re: Celebrate the Bean - Melbourne 2nd March

Are you planning to make coffee at all?
Probably too big an ask (machine, supplies and baristi), but would be a great chance to showcase some CS brown.

I would suggest a printed backdrop of the CS membership card if possible.
Failing that, just the web address and logo in a number of places.

Will the artwork on the van be done by then?

Ill bring the BBQ drum in if you like. Ill even give it a clean.

No need for the rubber chicken now!

Making coffee was going to be on the cards but a little too much trouble with fridges etc.

A 10 foot CS card would be cool. Ill have a think on that (I know someone who knows someone with a large colour plotter... I can smell a favour swap!)

Van art? Not sure, it will be close. Great if it is although I doubt there is much car parking nearby. Will have to scope the area for a good exposure spot prior to the event. ;)

BBQ drum? Yes please, although I doubt it needs cleaning. Like an antique, it adds cred when its grubby.

No rubber chicken needed... boy those 3 years went fast.

Re: Celebrate the Bean - Melbourne 2nd March

Are you going to be able to do a roast at the display? Like in the GeneCafe or similar?
Would be interesting, but youd have to be sure to keep the burny ow-ows away from the crowd.

I like the idea of the transition roasts.

Im about to fax off my entry for the home barista comp. Whee.

Re: Celebrate the Bean - Melbourne 2nd March

    Andy,

Id love to help and hereby put up my hand to volunteer some time on the stand.

A couple of PCs with keyboards showing CS live is a great idea and I see great value in showing/guiding people through the various parts of the site.
I reckon at least 2 independent PCs would be required so that interested parties get a chance of reasonable [for an expo] look.
IMO Laptops present a security nightmare in a crowd.

Id be happy to bring in/loan my Corretto setup for static display and would even be prepared to pull off a roast demo, but Ill not vouch for the quality of the roast given "expo" conditions.

Suggest a dogbowl/HG and a Popper should be displayed too.

Perhaps a film showing 5min demos of various home roasting methods could be produced, and shown through the day....big ask I know, but there are some pretty resourceful people here.

You need cool handouts promoting CS Brown with tasting notes/medal tally and site details etc, maybe backed with some giveaway[s] for new members or CS Brown customers.

I agree, itd be great to sell/giveaway sample shots of CS Brown, but with everybody else doing this, the impact may get a bit lost.

A display of beans at various roast levels is a great idea, and even better if people can "run their fingers through them".

I suggest you bring some of those clear plastic [empty] expo pass holders, so us CSers can bring our cards and generally swan about the place adding street cred.
Cool CS Tshirts worn and sold on the stand [and beanbay] would be even better....black Tshirt with card logo across the chest.

You should also have a display/poster outlining the concept and virtues of the Fair Crack scheme.

Good one Marty, more CSrs the better!
Maybe we should try and have CS home barista fest prior to the comp to get some practice?

Work? I doubt it, it is on a Sunday!
    ;)

I was expecting a CSr get together, a few coffees, a chat about our hobby/obsession/passion and do it among some bean smoke for atmosphere.

I hear some non-CSrs might be there too but Im sure we can move them across to the forum and improve their coffee process.

Here is the latest info about the home barista comp...

    [hr]

Celebrate the Bean - Crocs Home Barista Championship
Home enthusiasts battle it out for the title of Top Home Barista! Expose your obsession and take part in our Crocs Home Barista Championship on Sunday 2 March at Waterfront City. To register simply download and complete the entry form to battle it out for:

1st prize - $500 and Coffex coffee to the value of $150 and A Home Barista Kit from Home Barista Institute valued at $195
2nd prize - $250 and Coffex coffee to the value of $50 and A Home Barista Course from Home Barista Institute valued at $150
3rd prize - $100 and Coffex coffee to the value of $50 and A Home Barista Course from Home Barista Institute valued at $150

What you need to do in the Home Barista Championship?
The competition will be based on the following:

    1) Each Home Barista will have 15 minutes in total. This includes preparation time to familiarise yourself with the espresso machine and the grinder; make the coffees to the judges and time to clean up.

    2) When asked to proceed, the timer will start and the home barista will have 15 minutes to prepare and serve to the 2 judges at the judging table: 2 espressos, 1 cappuccino and 1 latte. The order is at the discretion of the competitor.

    3) There will be 3 competitors during each 15 minutes time slot

    4) There will be 3 judges, with one reviewing your technical skills and 2 others judging the taste and presentation.

    5) You will then need to clean up the equipment and the workspace for the next competitor.

What you need to do in the Home Barista Championship?
You can bring your own tamper if you want to. Coffee machines and grinders (from Gaggia Australia) will be provided. Tampers, milk jugs, thermometers(from Home Barista Institute), coffee (from Coffex) and other accessories will be provided. Milk will be available, but you may bring your own .

    Andy,

    re the electrical tagging requirement.....
Is it your intention to power up any of the home- "franken"- roasters?

Tagging, could be a little tricky to organise unless a fellow snobber could assist

Re: Celebrate the Bean - Melbourne 2nd March

    Marty,

I will have to re-read the e-mail more carefully tonight in that case.

Anyhow, it seems that we will both be competing around the same time, and possibly AT the same time.

    Brett.

EDIT - I just looked at the e-mail again.
Can you please mark your diary that I have allocated you for the first session to commence at 1pm on Sunday 2 March at the Main Stage at Waterfront City.
You will compete in the first group from 1pm - 1:15pm.
Marty, the way I read it, you are in the 2nd group of 3 (1:15-1:30) in the first session (1pm - 2pm)
and I am in the first group of 3 (1pm-1:15) in the first session (1pm-2pm).

So, this means there might be more than 2 of us competing. Damn - there goes the top 2 finish!

Now I would enter if they made Crocs that were my size... $50 well spent... but I guess there is just no market for sizes above 16...
So my search continues for comfortable slippers/lazy peoples shoes for me ;)

Good Luck in the comp fatboy & marty ;) To be honest though, I doubt the non CSers will stand a chance :P
Anyway if I am free I will check out the CS display, sounds like it will be quite interesting.

Exactly the same here, Marty - hope they have separate machines and not just a 2 or 3 group commercial (I dont like to share) ;)

Re: Celebrate the Bean - Melbourne 2nd March

Couldnt be a shared machine surely.
We all need to do steaming for the 2 milk drinks. Trying to share and stay within a 15 minute window wouldnt seem plausible.

They say the machine/grinders will be Gaggia. To me that says its either home machines like the Classic, or full-on commercial machines.

Do Gaggia make a single group HX?

I can understand the attraction for fishing, but wouldnt your feet sweat in them out of water? I always wondered about that. Mind you, I find thongs uncomfortable ;D Some shoe fashions leave me perplexed. I was in town yesterday, playing tourist guide to some o/seas visitors (from Canada ::) they would have been suffering more than I was) dying in the heat, and there was a girl with hardly any clothes on, but sporting a pair of pink ugg boots. :o

So, who wants to participate? What ideas do you have for the display? What else should we do?
Id be happy to help, although about all I can think of being useful for is to hand out leaflets or something. :-[ But if you can think of a job I could help with, Ill be there.

Im sure you could teach me some things about popper roasting Judy, most people that come and see us have prob never seen a green bean!

Even if only for a social day out it should be a blast.

I wonder if it would be rude to ask one of the stalls to make us coffee with CS beans?
    ;)

In fact, maybe Ill take a grinder too
    :)

Talk about a thorn among the roses... its all the CS ladies that are keen on having a bean filled Sunday by the water.

Judy the crocs look ugly, but I have been converted.I used to laugh at other people wearing them until I was given a pair. Now I wear them around the house and in public as well ,as for fishing in them they have plenty of holes so your feet dry quickly .

    On ya Bruce!
T-shirts? I guess you should wear pants too unless of course you were going to do the flag waving in a bikini?

What about wearing a flag and waving your bikini.
That should get a few punters to the stall.

Re: Celebrate the Bean - Melbourne 2nd March

Just got an e-mail regarding the hardware being used in the Home Barista Comp.

    Gaggia MM grinder
    Gaggia Baby Twin machine.

PDFs of both products were attached to the e-mail. Ive attached the Baby Twin pdf.

The Baby Twin states it is a twin boiler machine with programmable doseage, Solenoid valve (3 way I assume), commercial standard PF and group and for some unknown reason... a metal pannarello (I wonder if they will get narky when we try to remove them?).

Worst of all... its a righty and Im used to steaming with a lefty now!
Ill have to cast my mind back to the Silvia days.
