Re: AASCA - 2008 Victorian Barista Championships

For those of you who could not make it to the info night, i am sorry because you missed out on a great night. The 30 strong had the chance to listen to Justin Metcalf, David Makin, Con Haramabopoulos & Luca Costanzo give their thoughts on competitions in the various categories. It was awesome to see so many new faces and all bodes well for Specialty Coffee in Victoria. Looks like the Vics are going to be a real cracker.

Just remember that if you are interested in competing or helping out get in contact with your ASSCA representative TODAY!!!!!

No, its FREE to come and watch the best in the state pour, cup and art on both days.

Even better, after each barista has competed they will spend 15 minutes on a coffee cart with their own coffee and for something like a a gold coin donation they will make you a cup of coffee too.

There will be screens to get a good view, cameras on the pour and plenty of people with a coffee passion to have a yak to.

Should be a great day out.

Re: AASCA - 2008 Victorian Barista Championships

    David Makin 809 points
    Con 776 points
    David Seng 768.5 points

It was tense at the best of times...fantastic experience.....tired as hell and have to go to my day job tomorrow....making coffee.

Just for transparency, Con did not train with Team Veneziano nor did he use Veneziano coffee...well done to him. He took out 1st place Latte Art, 2nd place Barista Championships and 3rd place Cupping Championships.

Toshi stole the show in the final of the cuppings. Con was the fastest cupper calling time at 1 min 24 sec. Zoe about 30 seconds later.....and Toshi the slowest but more methodical of the lot calling time at 2 min 12 sec. Con got 2/8 correct, Zoe with 4/8 and Toshi the master cupper 7/8....for those thinking about entering the cupping comp...its not all about speed....you have 8 minutes to assess 8 sets of 3....plenty of time.

Back to training....no rest for the wicked.

Well done to the all the competitors, putting yourself up on show under intense scrutiny takes serious courage.
Congratulations to Dave M, Con & Dave S (Bloody well done, 3rd place in a really tough field at your first hit out Dave - great result).
Very impressive work in the cupping by Toshi.

The cupping comp went over a treat (well done Andy).

All of the organisers, competitors and judges deserve a big pat on the back.

Its encouraging to see so much commitment, everyones passion is truly infectious.

Really well done to all involved.

    Cant wait for Nationals.

Re: AASCA - 2008 Victorian Barista Championships

Was a good show, but I think toshi the slurper was the highlight :) Congrats to all the guys. I was especially pleased to see Will Hudson from Mildura in the finals. A good showing given he hasnt got an experienced team behind him and it bodes well for coffee in general that competitors arent only coming from the middle of town.

I would like to see the coffee cart out the front replaced with something else though. Such a shame to have the barista working on the FB80s in the comp, then come out onto the san marino for the public to sample their blends. Im confident the double basket on my Qhaha holds more coffee, and I know I get better shots out of it. A couple of Makin Mavers on a table instead would have done far more justice to the coffees.

Thanks aedion. Only state winners and territory winners are automatically in to the national finals. I will have to take out the National Opens to make it in the National Final the next day. I will be training and tweaking my routine based on the feedback given to me by all the judges that judged me on the weekend gone by.

    Hi All,

I attended and very much enjoyed the Vic Barista Champs final on Sunday.

However I mislaid a waterproof jacket, I think probably at the venue - I must have been suffering the effects of too much caffeine??

It is a Cloudveil two tone blue lightweight jacket.

I would very much appreciate if someone has it or has suggestions of a further avenue of enquiry.

    Regards,

    Peter

Re: AASCA - 2008 Victorian Barista Championships

Some cuptasting shots from last weekend.
    (Excuse the phone cam shots)

It was a great competition, lots of fun and the competitors and audience all got involved in the excitement of the event. *Its a surprisingly great spectator sport.

    The basic event is...
    • Heats are 8 minutes maximum time.
    • 3 tables will have 8 x 3 cups (24 coffees in total, 100ml in each cup)
    • One of the cups in each group of 3 will be odd.
    • You will need to identify the odd coffee and push the cup forward (away from the others)
    • When you have finished your 8 sets step back from the table and raise your hand to signal to the time keeper to stop.
    • At the end of the heat the head judge will check the results and note the time it took to complete.
    • The 3 most correct entries from the heats will go into the final set of 3.
    • Time will be the decider if scores are tied.
    • The most correct in the fastest time in the final is the winner!

The next one will run even smoother now we know what we are doing ;-)

    Firstly the back-room setup.

Lots of pour-over brewers, airpots, CS coffee and the trusty CS DMM to ensure the coffee was brewed and served at competition temperature.
