SA Barista Championships are only scheduled for Thursday 21st. Friday isnt scheduled anymore. Would be great if a lot of South Aussies showed up to support. And even better if more compete. I will be there watching proudly. ::)

    Thanks for the update.

I heard that the entries in SA might be a little low at the moment... can we get some local CSrs to give their local barista a shove in the right direction?

There is a trip to "wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen" up for grabs to the Aussie barista who gets through the state and national finals.

Has to be worth a crack!

Donnas650--please keep us updated about the SA competition--I would love to go and view but Thursday is probably impossible at this point. Do you have any idea of the times when things will be happening?

The sa comp is scheduled for this thurs, 21st feb at the function room, upsstairs at the beachhouse, glenelg. the day should get started from 11am (if everything goes as planned), but well all be there earlier than that getting set up and all. Were also planning on running an in-promptu latte-art comp that will be open to anyone (both professional and home-snobs) which were hoping to be a bit more fun and less serious than the official comp (details on the day).

Hope to see you all (or at least a handful of you) there, and i can only re-iterate andys words to give your local barista a good shoving to get involved.

There should also be a coffee cart setup (thanks bill!) thatll be manned by some of the states best, so we should be able to get you guys a decent cuppa or two!!

Re: AASCA - Australian Barista Championship Schedu

I have a question about how the National Championships work...

I gather that all the State Champions are invited to compete. Are State runners up also invited? Would make sense to me, as a runner up in any particular State, may have scored better than a winner from another State.

Maybe someone could give us a run down on how it all works. :)

Re: AASCA - Australian Barista Championship Schedu

There is an open repechage (basically a 2nd chance) the day before the national finals.

The winner of this open repechage will go straight in to the national final the next day to battle it out with all the other state and territory champions for the coveted Australian Barista Championships....so obviously there will be one state or territory that will have 2 representatives.

You raise a very valid point Dennis. Erin Sampsons calibration score was good enough to take out 3rd place in Australia last year.....she came runner up in both Victoria and the Open Repechage. Because she was the runner up to Con in the Opens, she was invited to be the calibration competitor for all the finalist judges.

Just to add to the excitement in Melbourne - we have confirmed two international WBC qualified judges - Emma Markland from NZ and Ross Bright from Singapore/Perth who will be judging both the opens on Saturday May 3rd and Sunday May 4th at the National Final...

Latte Art Championships will be Saturday afternoon and Cup Tasting Championship Sunday Afternoon (run by CS extraordinare Andy)...

Be in Melbourne on Sunday around 5pm to find out who the ABC champ will be for 2008.

Re: AASCA - Australian Barista Championship Schedu

If the Vics are anything to go by my two days will start at about 5am and I will return home about 10pm (or later).... so I doubt Ill be posting results but I assume some of the CS army will get something up in this thread over the two days.

In the cuptasting there will be 9 people sniffing, slurping and spitting their way into the last remaining seat of the final. *The other two seats in the final are already spoken for by the WA (Catherine) and VIC (Toshi) champions so the added pressure should make it great spectator sport. *

It should be a blast having so many talented people trying their best to earn the 3 seats to Copenhagen to represent Australia at the WBC.

Best of luck to the Baristas, Artists and the Cuppers over the next two days.

    Hmmm,

For an event like this I would have thought that they could set up a live feed for people like us to check in on from time to time. Its not that hard to do is it?

Not really - but in its absence I had to cobble together whatever I could.

I know they had a live feed in the USA this week but have been having lots of probs with it.

Just in case anyone needs to know.

Today Con from 7 Grams won the Open Heats and will be competing tomorrow at the Nationals.

As for the latte art comp, Habib (he did quad rosettas) from NSW got top marks of 30pts, with Erin from Venez getting 2nd with 27pts and Con coming in 3rd with 25pts.

Hell mate, what youre doing is terrific and I really appreciate it [smiley=thumbsup.gif]. I just thought it was a bit disappointing that AASCA hadnt tried to do something.

Yeah, I noticed the SCAA feed isnt working too well, maybe they should have employed one of those young ladies who have live feeds from their bedrooms, to sort it out for them ::)..... Not that Ive actually seen one of these :P

Thanks to Emanuele Muratore of Ristretto in Perth who went over to compete and ended up as my journalist on the spot.

Wow, those competitors certainly keep pushing those machines to the limit. Reminds me of the things some scratch DJs can do with a turntable.

Thanks for the results update. I couldnt stay for the scores, but did make it for Davids outstanding presentation/performance. Amazing! He looked cool as a cucumber. Wanted to go home and have a crack at his signature drink myself. Why is it that only the judges get to taste?

Anyway, it was a great educational and entertaining experience, and was only sorry I couldnt hang around for the cupping.

The two LM machines went for $10,800 & $10,900.
One to John Doyle (coffeetraining.com.au) and the other to Craig (from Veneziano).
Luca put in the opening bid $5000 in one of the auctions, but he was dreaming. ::) ::)

Great weekend. The standard of the barista competitors was high, both in the opens and the finals.

Well Im sorry I didnt make it down to see Daves victory, but I take some solace in having seen both his & cons performances in the Victorians. Thatll teach me to have a few beers on a saturday night & leave some errands until sunday morning (not helped by the missus vanishing with the car for most of saturday). By the time we were done most of the action was over.

Knowing the boys at veneziano Im very tempted to drop by this morning reving the bike at full throttle out the front to see how their heads are after what I suspect was a very heavy night of drinking ;)

    Those pictures are stunning Sydney.

I also had some great feedback on your shots from the Vics from a couple of different people over the weekend too.

Im glad you managed to capture the judges table setups too, some of those are amazing and have a huge amount of effort in the design and prep. I picked at least 4 or 5 winners on the weekend, its almost unfair that in a field of that quality there is only one 1st prize.

Re: AASCA - Australian Barista Championship Schedu

Perhaps like at the worlds, there should be best signature drink, best cappuccino and best espresso...maybe best table set up etc
