Emerging trends in specialty coffee would be a good scoop.
Big news indeed there fellow Snobs!
CS has just received Press Credentials for what has traditionally been the largest gathering of coffee professionals in the world and has been labeled the Global Coffee Event of the Year. Yup! CS will be attending the 2008 Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) Annual Conference!! This years conference (http://conference.scaa.org/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1) is being held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA May 2nd through the 5th and in attendance will be your intrepid CS reporter, Moi! :)
Welcoming events start on the 1st with events scheduled through the evening of the 5th and I plan on being in attendance from beginning to end! Some how I dont think Ill have to pack any CP for this trip! Anybody know of an anti-caffeine pill?!? ::) ;D
The 2007 SCAA conference saw over 500 exhibitors from 78 countries displaying their wares along with over 8,500 attendees and this years conference is expected to be equally popular. I hope everybody is packing warm clothes as I suspect it wont be anywhere near as warm (Minneapolis is expecting 30+cm of snow tonight with a Winter Storm Warning in effect from Thursday evening through Saturday) as last years conference in Long Beach California. Instead of watching breaking waves on the beach attendees can watch the breaking up of the ice on the local lakes! ::) ;D
At this point the plan is to do postings through-out the conference as time permits with more in depth reports being posted after the conference is over. We are also looking into the possibility of doing live pod casts from the conference if I can get a strong enough signal in the convention center from the city wide WiFi system that Minneapolis has in place.
So, what would yall most like to see/hear about? Is there a particular person youd like to ask a question of? Particular equipment youd like see/hear about? Keep in mind that video is not allowed on the conference floor with-out special permission and an escort from the organization. Stills are allowed on the conference floor with permission from the subjects.
Post your thoughts here on what youd like to see/hear about and Ill do my best to cover as many of them as possible! :)

Emerging trends in specialty coffee would be a good scoop.
Will look forward to reading posts, have a great and informative trip!!
Being a technophile, any news on whats coming in machines and grinders would be greatly appreciated. Ive heard that theres a few interesting dual boiler machines in the horizon, pressure profiling pumps etc.
I think Anthony and Mark have pretty much covered it. It should be a pretty cool trip - have a great time. :)
I have spent all morning now reading up on the conference on the SCAA website. Looks like fun and so much to see and do. They almost need to run this over a month period to check it all out and do a lot of the workshops.
I want to see lots of Photos Javaphile.
The "very jealous" Goodies
Do me a favour and keep an eye out for any cheap (and internationally available) home roasting machines about to hit the market that can accommodate 2-4 lb roasts.
Oh... and tell me if you spot the Tooth Fairy (you may have more luck with the latter methinks).
-Alche "Green with envy" mist-
Ill second Alchemist there - can you take a look at the small commercail and large domestic roaster market, and maybe even get in the ear of the stallholders about the growing market for a $1000-$2000 price range drum roaster that can handle up to 2kg?
A lucky bugger indeed I am! :D
Im really looking forward to the conference (as if you couldnt tell from the headline! ::)) and expect a seriously busy and informative week-end. No doubt full of lots of shiny bits and pieces, earfuls of all things coffee, and one big buzz lasting for the entire week-end!!
As much as I love to travel and regale yall with my Road Trip stories Im afraid there wont be much of those this time around. This would be a very short story. The convention center where the conference is being held is all of 2km from my house. ::) :D
I know all the fans of the Road Trip stories will be disappointed by this news but hopefully there will be plenty of interesting reading of the goings on at the conference itself to hold your attention. :)
/me starts making a list....and checking it twice.... ::)
Keep the ideas/areas of interest coming and well see if we cant get them all covered. :)
Java "All buzzed up!" phile
FYI I know where the Tooth Fairy is. Shes locked up in the Tooth Chest in the china cabinet! ::) ;D
In that case, what you end up lacking in "Road Trip" story can be made for with PHOTOs!!! Lots and lots of photos!!!! *;) ;DOriginally Posted by Javaphile link=1207854150/0#8 date=1207883408

I think I can safely say there will be no shortage of photos. No shortage at all! ;D ;D ;D
If, er....when....the cam fills up I can dump it too my laptop which I will have with. :) Even with all the pics I plan on taking I dont think Ill fill its hdd up, especially when I can dump them onto a workstation every night. I dont think even I could manage to take 80gbs of 3.1mp pictures in a single day. ::) ;D

Good scoops for specialty coffee would be an emerging trend.Originally Posted by Wine_of_the_Bean link=1207854150/0#1 date=1207859274
If you bump into Linus Verna or Verna Designs, ask how his machine is coming along (code named the flux capacitor on the H-B site). It been quiet on that front for a while, so Im getting very curious.
Will do!Originally Posted by Sparky link=1207854150/0#12 date=1208431958

Will look forward to reading your comments...have fun!!!

Enjoy the event Java(Im not running out of great coffee)phile :)
If they are handing out free samples - or say, free sample roasters, get one for me.

Javaphile, anything on roast profiling, eg. effect of slow/fast ramping to first crack (just an example), that sort of useful stuff to all of us home roasters.
Also blending info, bean marriages "made in heaven" ( :D ) , etc.
Have fun. :)
Added to the list Sean! :)Originally Posted by scooter link=1207854150/15#20 date=1209463411

The first event from the conference is only 5 hours away! Post your questions/topics soon!! :)

Make sure you stick your head in at Booth # 1552 where site-sponsor Cafetto have a stand too!
(I think we need a new thread for the news off the ground)
Have fun Java!

Ditto from me mate, have a great weekend [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
Im sorry Im not posting anything at this point but the fact of the matter is that there just isnt enough time in the day to do it. Im at the conference running from one thing to another for 14 hours or more a day and by the time I get home I have to head right to bed to get 6 hours of sleep if Im lucky before getting up and heading out to do it all over again!
Given the hectic schedule of events Ill probably be lucky to post anything of length before the conference is over.
As a teaser, today I had what may be the highlight of the whole week-end. It was certainly one of the highlights of my life! I had a chance to meet and spend some time with Jane Goodall. Yes that Jane Goodall. For a hint at why she was at SCAA take a gander here: http://www.janegoodall.org/ About 2/3rds of the way down the page on the right side. :)
To help yall survive until I can do more complete postings this year SCAA has a live blog of the conference, including live coverage of the US Barista Championships: http://scaa.wordpress.com/
And heres a couple of pics. This one is of the Ethiopian dancers that opened the Keynote speech tonight.

Youre supposed to be drinking the coffee to stay awake!!!! ;D ;D
If that fails tho.....have a good sleep!
Unfortunately caffeine will only work so long!! Hhhmmm....10 hours of sleep in the last 3 days!
Not enough time in the day to post, let alone sleep!!
I did manage to score a sample bag of the tea espresso mentioned in another thread a few days ago that I will be giving a go after the conference is over.
And heres a pic of every home roasters dream machine!
Java "Off to rest his dead feet and almost dead brain!" phile
Is that a 1 or 2 kg roaster. As Borat would say, "Vedy niiicccce"
I believe thats their 2kg model, with a retail price of around $USD8,500.Originally Posted by The Goodies link=1207854150/15#29 date=1209946307
Very nice indeed!
Java "Its late, Im dead on my feet, and theres another day yet too go! Bedtime!" phile
Well the con is over and somehow I managed to survive! Im not quite sure how I accomplished that, but somehow I did!
Stay tuned for lots of comments on the conference and of course lots of pictures!
Hhhmmm....Perhaps it was this big cuppa java that kept me awake for the last 5 days!
Java "What? You mean I can sleep now?!" phile
Ok, its time for the picture fun to begin!
I will be dividing the pictures up into different categories and posting them all directly on the CS server. This means there will be one picture per post. This will allow easier referencing to a particular picture in discussions and prevent their being used/sold by an image hosting site with-out permission.
For ease of viewing all images will be reduced too 30% of their original size.
There will be multiple pictures of some items, ie different viewing angles and lighting conditions.
With a few exceptions all pictures in the equipment categories will be posted with-out comment. The brands of the equipment is visible on the vast majority of the equipment pictures. If you have any questions on a particular picture feel free to post it and I will respond as best as I am able.
All the pictures will be posted here in the News section in a centralized location rather than splitting them up into smaller categories and posting them in multiple forums.
We owe a big thank you to SCAA for the access they granted CoffeeSnobs and too all the vendors who so generously allowed pictures to be taken of their products and displays. Per the conference/press rules every vendor was asked for permission to take pictures of their displays/items.
As a side note only one vendor refused permission for pictures to be taken. Not very bright of them if you ask me as they sell a home roaster and hence missed out on free publicity on one of the worlds largest and busiest coffee sites! One dedicated to the very market theyre selling too!! Oh well, their loss! Please do not ask what company it was as given their downright rude response to my polite request to take a picture Ill not give them publicity of any kind.
Please note: Pictures of some equipment will not be included in the general threads as they are deserving of a thread all unto themselves and will be written up in detail later. So if any vendors perusing the site dont see a picture of their product dont worry. It just means that youre special and will have a thread all to yourself later! :)
Java "Let the picturelogue begin!" phile
Hrm....There appears to be major connectivity issues between me and CS tonight so please be patient on my uploads.
