Rapid, portable detection of wine composition could preserve quality and stop fraud

You dont need a wine expert to identify a 74 Pinot Noir from Burgundy – a handheld "electronic tongue" devised by European scientists will tell you the grape variety and vintage at the press of a button.

Designed for quality control in the field, the device is made up of six sensors which detect substances characteristic of a certain wine variety. Components such as acid, sugar and alcohol can be measured by this detection, and from these parameters it can determine the age and variety of the wine.

The tongue was invented by Cecilia Jiménez-Jorquera and colleagues from the Barcelona Institute of Microelectronics, Spain, and is reported in the Royal Society of Chemistry journal The Analyst.

Wine industry specialists told the researchers they lacked a fast way to assess quality of wines – it takes a long time to send samples to a central laboratory for processing.

This new tongue is not only swift, but also portable, cheap to manufacture, and can be trained to "taste" new varieties as required.

Jiménez-Jorquera says "the device could be used to detect frauds committed regarding the vintage year of the wine, or the grape varieties used."

Ive been busy dealing with some out of the blue rather intense family stuff here for the past couple of weeks that makes a daytime soap look like a simple boring nap on the couch. With-out going into details I think its safe to say that if you imagine 50 years of an extended family clans secrets and skeletons all suddenly being exposed to the light of day for the first time and pack it all into a 2 week period, youd have a pretty good idea of my last 2 weeks. A story so twisted and convoluted and outright bizarre that not even Hollywood would dare present it as the truth! And its not over yet! Theres still plenty of room for additional twists and turns to come into play!

Ive written a small novella detailing the highlights keeping the rest of the Admin team informed of whats been going on and I think theyd readily agree with the above statement. They might even say if anything Ive understated the situation. ::) :o

I expect to be posting more and more as the coming weeks pass and things get worked out and some semblance of normalcy starts to return around here. :) :) :)

Well thank you Kosmo, Im glad you enjoy them. I try to make each one not only topical to the post but with some humor mixed in as well. :)

I think at least for now Ill have to pass on writing the quotes book. First I have to get the multi-million dollar screenplay of the current events written so I can sell the story and retire! ;D
