Wicked Sunday (Celebrate the Bean) 2009

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight

    Good news CSrs!

We will be running a home roasting tent at Wicked Sunday (the event formerly known as Celebrate the Bean) again.

The event will be held at Federation Square, on the banks of the Yarra in Melbourne.

    Wicked Sunday
    Sunday 15th March 2009

We are looking for some CS’rs to come and roast in the Wicked Sunday tent so if your keen to spend a day making chaff and brown beans on a popper, breadmaker, Hottop, Gene Café or some other whacky roasting device let me know via email.

There will be a “Home Barista Competition” again and we will do some roasting demos on stage during the day too.
    http://www.homebarista.com.au/hbi_news_42.html

This is the schedule for the Celebrate the Bean Stage

10:00 – 10:15 MC Welcome BBC Good Food
10:15 – 10:45 Tips on making great coffee at home
    10:45 – 11:00 Latte Art Demo I
11:00 – 12:00 Bean to Cup – William Angliss Coffee Academy
    12:00 – 13:00 HBI Comp part I
    13:00 – 13:45 Home Roasting Demo
    13:45 – 14:45 HBI Comp part II
    14:45 – 15:00 Latte Art Demo II
    15:00 – 15:30 HBI Winners announced
15:30 - 15:45 MC wrap up BBC Good Food

    Roasters Week
    Monday 16th – Sunday 22nd March 2009

The following week is going to be called “Roasters Week” and coffee roasters all around Victoria will open their doors to the public for educational sessions, demos and tours. *I don’t know how many roasters will be involved but I have spoken to a few that are keen to get something happening that week and I’m sure the numbers will build.

[s]The organisers also have an opening for an MC on the day. *If you have a love of all things coffee, enjoy explaining things to a layman and are happy to talk about coffee all day (sounds like most CoffeeSnobs to me!) let me know.
    [/s]

The event is still [s]3 months[/s] [s]3 weeks [/s] 4 daysaway [s]but we are getting the information up nice and early so that interstate CS’rs that would like to come have plenty of time to plan a trip and grab some cheap airfares.[/s]

    Should be a blast!

    Nice work Chris.
Maybe we can all chip-in and buy them back after the event?
    ;)

It should be great fun. If we can help with airport transfers or anything else let me know (via email) and we will make it happen. Of course, the same goes for any interstate CSrs who are coming into Melbourne for that weekend

CSrs are also welcome to come along to "Bean Around 40 Years: The Roasting Experience", a free, public coffee roasting demonstration and information session hosted by The Coffee Company, as part of Roasters Week.

Sessions will be held daily at 10am from Tuesday 17 March to 21 March at 260 Carlisle St Balaclava and will take you through the process from green beans to the finished product. Bookings via coffeeinfo@coffeecompany.com.au or call 0419 113681.

We also hope to see you all at the Origin Roasters Cafe at Wicked Sunday, which will feature some of Melbournes smaller specialty roasters. The Coffee Company will be making coffee and selling beans there from 2pm to 4pm.

We look forward to meeting some CSrs during the coffee festivites. :)

Yes, their website will have the latest information.
(Thats the same link that the Wicked Sunday banner ads point to)

BeanBay pickup? No idea, I would guess after but we are always at the whim of bean brokers around the country as to when beans arrive here which is why we cannot publish future dates. We always try to have the BeanBay sale in the middle of the month for an end of month pickup.
Mostly Im still packing beans the day the email notification gets sent... it is really that fine.

What do you need to do in the Home Barista Championship?

The following is just an overview of the requirements.

The competition will be based on the following:

    1) Each Home Barista will have 15 minutes in total. This includes
preparation time to familiarise yourself with the espresso machine and
the grinder; make the coffees to the judges and time to clean up.

    3) There will be 3 competitors during each 15 minutes time slot

    4) There will be 3 judges, with one reviewing your technical skills and 2 others judging the taste and presentation.

    5) You will then need to clean up the equipment and the workspace for the next competitor.

    What Will Be Provided

You can bring your own tamper if you want to. Coffee machines (Commercial Grade Expobar Minore) and grinders (Challlenge Grinder) will be provided by Expobar Australia.

    I like to watch

Has the makings of a great few days, a cupping session at BBB Saturday 10 am Saturday to add to my caffine addiction problem (only problem is not enough)

Depending on the load of gear and how far we have to carry it I will have a laptop, camera and mobile broadband so pics could be added during the day or straight after. If there is a Wifi network in range we can pinch then live feed could be done I guess but I plan on being really busy *:)

Re: Wicked Sunday (Celebrate the Bean) 2009

i have just faxed in my application for the home barista comp... by the silence on this thread, i guess i am a shoe in for the first prize, if i am the only competitor....

one question i do have is are the drinks supposed to be made on a 30ml espresso (ie single) or 60ml? at home my standard latte/f.w is done on a double, so i am used to it that way...
also, the espresso, again 30 or 60ml? my default for the black drinkers is a long black, with the 30ml or so of hot water..... so what are the "officials" looking for?

Just one silly question, where is River Terrace? is it inside Fed square? I really want to join the coffee and latte art training sessions

Re: Wicked Sunday (Celebrate the Bean) 2009

I just added a map of the fed square area to the first post.
(click on it for a slightly bigger version)

The HBI Barista comp stage, Coffee Academy, Cafetto and CoffeeSnobs are all in a cluster at the east of the site.

Obscura and Di Bella are a cut lunch away at the Swanson St end.

...and there are plenty of other food, drink and coffee sites in between.

    also....

Home Barista Institute are going to "silent auction" the Expobar supplied gear that is being used for the home barista comp.

    3 x Minore 3s
    3 x Challenger grinders

All are one day old, straight from the box so it might be a chance for some CSrs to snare a bargain!

for those who have entered the home barista comp, but still too shy to say, i have come across this:
    http://homebarista.com.au/doc/Info_Judging_Process.pdf

answers the questions as to what we "should" be doing up there!

    Andy,

Assuming my brain is awake what time do you need a hand to bump in on Sunday?

Packed so far dog bowl and spoon, 2 syphons and burner and Zass grinder. 2 large bags to carry 15kg of beans (and my $1 Minore 3 ;) )out again.

Sweet, my $1.50 bid will get past yours then.

hand to bump in on Sunday
Whatever time you wake up and are looking for coffee I guess!

Are you staying in the city?

I think the bump-in will be fine, I can get the van onsite so that will make it far easier. Ill be there pretty early but I expect that around 9am we start to get lots of people around even though the scheduled start is 10am.

Playing in Melbourne but staying in Northcote with a mate of mine so I will try and get in a bit before 9. I had visions of needing to shift a few bags of beans but if you can get to site makes it easier.

Bit of a shame I am not around for Tuesday there is a Microbrewing expo on at fed square as well :(
