Great to hear that youre there safely, Andy!
Well not quite on the ground yet but Im in the right country!
I landed in Los Angeles about 5 hours ago, I have grabbed a hire car and spent the morning cruising some of the California coast line, taking in the sights and some of the culture on the ground.
Ill fly to Altanta tomorrow night and will report in from SCAA (Specialty Coffee Assn America) on Wednesday.
Great to hear that youre there safely, Andy!
Keep right, KEEP RIGHT! :P
Have fun Andy!
Man, everyones over there! Im jealous.

### PLEASE NOTE ###
We will not be roasting until 22nd April but we have just roasted lots of sample packs that are ready to ship now and as a special for this week only they are just $25 each for 1 kilo of coffee!
WooHoo!! Glad to hear you made it across the big pond safely there Andy! I hope the weather is cooperating for your drive along the coast and youre getting to see something other than the city! :)

Can anyone give a local time for Tims performance?
Nevermind. Local time, Tims performance will be Friday 4.27am AEST
Practice time: 4.10am
another to watch out for on day 1, Sammy Piccolo from Canada, going in as one of the red hot favourites for WBC.
Any websites that takes bets for WBC? Bet Carl Sara and Sammy Piccolo. :D
Ok... so not at the SCAA yet but here are some travel pics.
Wow.. that is closer to the truth than I would have thought. *Im doing ok, no damage yet but have had a few horn blasts in my direction.Originally Posted by 0E3B22287C7D4B0 link=1239659120/2#2 date=1239675374
Reading a map and then driving is the hardest as Im reading maps in "left hand drive mode" and when I get to the busy interchanges Im in the wrong lane, looking the wrong way.
Stop signs are on the wrong side of the road too! *I didnt realise how often I only look for those on the left.
Here is a picture of my childhood favourite matchbox car, updated to 2008 model but still "has the look". Pic was taken somewhere south of LA on the coast, nice beaches, good weather and fun to "cruise" the coast in this...
for fans of the classic tarantino movie you will appreciate this picture of my suitcase...
I bought a little coffee with me (10kg).
Coffee in a can...
As most of you know I have bought lots of asian coffee in a can products in the past, these I grabbed last night.
The starbucks double shot with cream was not too bad (in a canned coffee scale). It has low fat milk and cream (go figure!) and actually had a coffee taste.
The monster can was more like the rest of the canned market... more coffee than a Iced coffee BigM but only just.
Coffee in the hotel is a filter machine. A small packet of coffee sealed inside a filter bag (like a coffee tea bag) and a little brewer.
I made it as single cup of coffee but it was still weak (looks about a single espresso shot of coffee). Interesting and better than instant but not as good as the coffee I bought with me
You get cute little packets of sugar, nutrisweet, stirrer and powdered whitener. A decaf and "leaded" coffee and individually wrapped take away cups.
I think Ill grab a pack of filters today.
hahaha, Im pretty sure youre gonna smell like coffee (not that its a bad thing) no matter what you wear now.Originally Posted by 48676D70090 link=1239659120/12#12 date=1239727088

This is already an excellent thread and Im looking forward to reading and seeing more of your adventures!
Im surprised how you managed to get that coffee through customs Andy.
Must be fun driving down the highway in that muscle car - pity you cant put the top down and feel the wind through your beard. ;D
Just remember, in future TomTom... Only way to go...
It sure got me! Anywhere with traffic I was fine, just went with the flow. But a turn into a quiet street was usually to the left hand side of the road! Quiet roads, roundabouts and Hawaiis 3-way give ways were the killers for me :oOriginally Posted by 7758524F360 link=1239659120/11#11 date=1239726781
Oh by the way, if you have the misfortune of being pulled over, whatever you do dont hop out of the car. Hands on wheel and they approach you. SCAA with a bullet wound is just no fun. :o :(
But apart from car crashes and police shootings, HAVE A BLAST!!! hehe ;)
Last time I was in the US I found I drove better after a few beers . At least I think I did ::)
Just wait until you get asked if you want regular or decaf with your next meal :P
What website will they have the worldchampsion streamed from? Is it from www.worldbaristachampionship.com ? Because last year there was a blog kinda site, where the sessions were streamed and people could comment and watch :)

I was looking and bookmarked HERE
I also just found from worldbasriachampionship.com - a few links down the bottom of the page.
One is to the video streaming that AM pointed out above. Check out this link for the WBC blog http://worldbaristachampionship.org/2009/
Loved the pic of your suitcase and all that coffee Andy, I showed my wife and she just rolled her eyes!! One can never be without good coffee. ;) ;)
And in a few hours when I show up hell have even more coffee! Along with a grinder too! Granted its old and worn and Id never use it for grinding anything finer than drip, but it sure beats hauling along one of the Super Jollys or the Grindmaster 875! ;DOriginally Posted by 21342323282B2728460 link=1239659120/23#23 date=1239770437

Yes hats off to Andy, I consider myself a pupil of the CS suitcase packing fraternity. Go on Javaphile hit those pictures up !
Enjoy fellas ;)
But if youre not willing to carry on the SJ *as hand luggage, can you really be considered a proper CoffeeSnob? *[smiley=vrolijk_1.gif]Originally Posted by 614A5D4A5B4342474E2B0 link=1239659120/24#24 date=1239778569
Well the car went back to hertz without any new scratches! *Had a couple of close moments, one lady smacked the wall of the freeway right in front of me as I was entering the on-ramp at Ventura. *She was ok but the car was a write-off. * She was mighty lucky that me and the 4 lanes of traffic all managed to swerve her.
Getting that much coffee through customs was easy as I had jumped all the pre-entry permit hoops. *Still got some weird looks though.
I have just checked into the hotel in Atlanta (very nice too) but it has no coffee maker, not even a kettle! *I can see Javaphile and I will have to go shopping soon after he gets here.
Found a great little coffee shop yesterday in California, I think I have enough pictures to make its own thread so Ill post it in the good coffee where section sometime soon.
Should be heading to the SCAA venue soon, looking forward to the first look... exciting stuff.
The below is a pic of something unusual for me and a lot of CSrs, sunset over water. Yeah I know its normal for our WA members but the rest of us dont get to see it very often.
Woohoo! I have arrived in one piece and found the hotel and Andy with no problems and we checked in with the SCAA folks. After we got our badges we did an initial initial walk through of the convention facilities. The Barista Comp area is much larger than last year but the trade floor appears to be significantly smaller. It will be interesting to see what it looks like when all set up.
Of course! Who else but a true snob would have brought along extra luggage for hauling all the bean samples home with?! :-? ;DOriginally Posted by 774251535549300 link=1239659120/26#26 date=1239797746
Its been a long day so Ill close this with a pic of our fearless (or is that sleepless?) leader in the hotel room earlier today. Please note that this was before the 7 hours or so of wandering around the convention center. :)

ABC Interview with Australian Barista Champion-TIM ADAMS
Its scheduled to run at 0823 tomorrow Friday but could run earlier from 0600.
Eitherway it will be posted on http://www.abc.net.au/rn/breakfast by 0900 tomorrow.
PS... Andy, you each have a bed or are you sharing ?
great work andy.... have a blast... keep us all posted and wish both Tim Adams and Carl Sara the best from all at Di Bella......
travel safe and enjoy your time away... :)
Its not on the schedule but is cupping part of the WBC too? or is this in Germany sometime? cant recall?
WBC is co-owned by both SCAA (USA) and SCAE (Europe) and bounces between Europe and USA. SCAA sometimes sells their rights for a year to host WBC hence countries like Japan get to host.
Cupping, Latte Art and Coffee in Good Spirits are all owned by SCAE and always in Europe. This year these competitions will be held in Cologne, Germany later this year.
Just a quick note to say that Im at the WBC now; the first rounds have just started. Tim has had his practice session, pulling some really stellar shots - phenomenally sweet. Tim is on in a few hours - I will try to sneak out of my workshop for it.
Enjoying some nice coffee from the WBC bar - a nicaraguan coffee from the marco uber boiler/chemex combo ... tastes a bit papery, though.
I have some photos from new york and coffeelab to upload - will do so once I find an internet cafe and/or hook up with andy to blag his laptop ;P

Some one needs to let us know how it all went...Originally Posted by 28312725440 link=1239659120/33#33 date=1239898784
The feed into Australia and else where was first Rate rubbish... Even the txt chat was laggy and no sound or video... Sorry Ustream.tv but be it you or Australias feed ... It was a poor showing.
Not happy jan.
All I can find that qualifies as live information is the official 2009 WBC blog.
The only mention of Australia I can see is this:
# Australia finished just in time - with a small spill. Onstage now - Japan.about 3 hours ago from web
From the WBC Blog
"Team Australia is in the house! Tim Adams has set up a mini tropical rainforest on his table, and he welcomes his judges with a soundtrack of animal and jungle sounds. He explains his coffee, a Sumatra, a Papau New Guinea and Australian Mountaintop. He tells them they will taste brown sugar and deep cedar. Tim has really brought the outback to Atlanta this weekend. For his signature drink, he combines raspberry, hibiscus vinegar and Australian red gum honey. As he presents the drinks with a dusting, he tells the judges he has really brought the outback all the way here—”It’s going to get dusty,” he warns them!"
For those that have not bean to the ABC...
You can listen here or go and get it...
Thanks MC !
