Sounds more like a True Barista... Customer focused and about the service..

Most of those that I run into that call them selves a Barista - serve just dirty brown slop with some froth on top *::)

So is ya just pull shots at home and never been EMPLOYED to pull shots.. There is the first cut off. TG ya can sneak in and we will not tell.

PS. Would prefer shots from many of the home guys over the general café shot jerkers.

We need more of this stuff in Brisbane.. *Home Barista / Home Roaster * *;D

Go Danes and lets have some pics of the day 8-)

There are no degrees of honesty.

Ive been paid for several days work as a barista.
On the face of it that excludes me.

Now if Danes want to let me enter because thats not what they meant, then they can let me know and I might just pop on down and give it a go.

So true - And would expect nothing less from a Quality person.

Thus the Public post and in ya face twist...

I do think that many here and maybe even Danes would not have an issue with the intent and interpretation - however others may not be so open/ forgiving.

Ya should still pop along and even offer to break the ice, may assist those others with nerves.

Would be great to be a spectator at these type of gatherings...

    Re: Danes Home Barista Competition

Thank you! Here is feedback from a judges on the result you were asking about:

    Scores are added up out of a total of 42. If the competitor is not within the timeframe of the competition being 5 minutes, points are deducted as follows;

    1-30 seconds overtime – 5 points deducted
    31 – 60 seconds overtime – 10 point deducted
    61 – 90 seconds overtime – 15 points deducted
    90 – 120 seconds overtime – 20 points deducted

The competitor who scored minus 2 (-2) had a score of only 8 / 42 and was 60 seconds overtime, so 10 points were deducted from the total.

I just thought they may have served it up incorrectly i.e. Looked so good, they drank it themselves *:D

However that is the sort of thing I would do, as competition is not really my forte... *And for me, my wife is my biggest critic *;D

PS. Home Barista / Home Roaster competition in Brisbane would get some interest I would suggest *8-)

PPS. I guess super autos, pods and nespresso users might be at a disadvantage *:)

    Re: Danes Home Barista Competition

I got confused by the following highlighted sections of the rules:

Each participant shall, during a period of not more than 5 minutes, produce:
2 x Black coffee – single shots only
2 x Milk coffee – single shots only

    Later it says:

    Black Coffees
    · Extracted from a double basket
    · One single shot of black coffee per cup

Is extracting a single shot from a double basket part of the test?

Doesnt it simply mean a single shot of coffee in the cup? With a double basket being able to make two cups at once with each cup having a single shot. Therefore, a double ristretto is not allowed.

I think it would be quite a challenge to produce four coffees in five minutes with the combo in the pictures if you were pulling single shots for one cup at a time.

It wouldnt be a competition if it was easy.

I still stand by my suggestion and of course we will see when Danes get back to you on it.

Never doubted the validity of your question TG.

I am sure many would still find four drinks in five minutes a challenge even with pulling shots for two drinks at once.

I attended one of the heats, and they did clarify on the day that you should use a double basket and pour into two single cups.

The grinder used was a Mazzer Mini, which is not a terribly fast grinder. I recon it would be near impossible to grind and pour 4 individual shots, as well as texture milk to produce the milk drinks, considering the speed of the grinder.

The competition is aimed at home users after all, so I reckon the grinder and machine was fit for purpose.

It is very doable in well under 5 minutes using doubles, and it was quite a bit of fun. :)

    Re: Danes Home Barista Competition

Just got back from the event.

The Grand Barista Championship was really good to watch. The winners four identical latte art drinks were Swans served in self made wax cups floating in some water in two square glass dishes. Pretty neat.

With the Home Barista competition, of the 6 finalists, only three of us showed up. Sadly, I came third, aka dead last :) At least I still score 25 kg of beans.

I had a real tough time dialing in the grinder, as the dude that went ahead of me decided in an utter act of douchebaggery, to dial it about half a turn courser before he left the stage. 5 minutes goes by pretty quickly when you have to try to undo such a massive act of sabotage.

All in all the day was mostly enjoyable, and I am really looking forward to enjoying all them beans. Danes really do have some tasty beans. I will be back again next year, but perhaps next year the rules should have some rules about good sportsmanship. :P

A big shout out to the third competitor, Richard, who went ahead to win the awesome Giotto, and 75 kilos of beans. Really well done mate!!!

Also, a massive shout out to the guys at Jetblack Espresso. I did the Home Barista course they offer there a while back after they did such a great job servicing the Pavoni, and I reckon I would probably not have made the finals without the course. Even after more than a year with the machine I still learned a massive. Only wish I had done it earlier...

Actually, he dialed it in himself. They had a dual machine setup going, and he was on the other machine and grinder :)

    Hey Nico,
Congrats on your 3rd place, I tried out for the comp but didnt get in, so well done.
I was a spectator at the comp and saw the GBC and the HBC, just a few comments from a spectators
    point a view
    1. If you get to see some video footage you will see, competitor 2 and 3 actually got more than the 1st competitor in set up time, actually close to a minute longer than him, even though it was meant to be 5 mins each
    2. Part of the rules was to leave the machine in exactly the same way you found it. I watched competitor 1 and he had just as much trouble with the grinder
    3. I was also very close to you when you were asked to go on 2nd but you chose 3rd, did anyone else get this choice?

Maybe you should not be so judgemental and grateful you got into the comp.

Doubt Sportsmanship can be validated.. Most today would sell their mother for a bit of bling.. And still pass it of as a humanitarian gesture.

I think TG has it right.. * Grinders are set to a specific value by a judge / facilitator prior to the start of each competitor. *

Maybe you were lucky that it was just a grind adjustment..... *Which others observed.... Maybe they were just resetting it to the starting position and got a bit over zealous.

Have heard of any number of other dirty tricks that some get up to.. *But lets not edumucate others to bad sportsmanship or other unlike CS behavioural practices.

Nico - Congrats on ya 3rd place with Honours....

    Re: Danes Home Barista Competition

I will be attending a Barista Workshop hosted by Scottie Callaghan.
I have attended once of these workshop months before the Home Barista event. What Scottie does is to show you how to prepare for a Barista Competition. It will be a very resourceful event for all future Barista Champions, and most of all, it allow me to prepare for the Home Barista Championship.

Unfortunately the event was announced with very short notice, just two days before.
    Date: 25 November 2010
    Time: 18:30 to 21:30
    Venue: Belaroma Coffee Centre
Address: 75 Kenneth Rd, Mainly Vale (Not far from Danes office)

Scottie Callaghan is the current Australian Barista Champion, and came third in the Word Barista Championship 2010, held in London. He once attended the Danes Gourmet Coffee Institute.
