Just the winner goes through to the Nationals but anyone that competed at the state level can enter the open heats at the Nationals.

Re: AASCA State and National Competitions 2010-2011

Jonny Pisanelli also won the cup tasting today.

All 3 finalists went through the semis into the final with 7 out of 8, after the final jonny scored a perfect 8 out of 8 in just over 3 minutes to take the cupping crown for the second year in a row.

Sorry I dont have pictures as my camera died during the last Latte Art competitor >:(

Congrats to Jonny for Cupping and Barista and congrats to Fiefy for the Latte Art win.

Its been a great few days of competition, the South Australians run an excellent comp with lots of familiar faces putting in loads of time to make it a smooth event and Im sure next year will be even bigger.

Friday night is the AASCA Annual General Meeting (AGM), where we should get a new president as Ross quail is standing down and Bill Comley the current vice president is tripped to take over the reigns. Also at the AGM Brian Raslan will become just the second Life Member in AASCA, big congrats to a long time judge and commitee member Brian!

Next AASCA state competition is the WA one in 3 weeks time.

great competition today! i luv it. 1st time coming to a barista competition, and have enjoyed it. came about 12.30ish and left for lunch and came back and saw Gabe from Epic perform.

got a photo of me in one of your photo gman, a very ugly one at that I had a laugh! :-[(its number 85), showed it to my wife and she couldnt stop laughing ;D

yeah the video n audio was great, except for the big screen above, kinda lacked contrast because the ambient light was way too bright and not enough power i think from the projector.

anyways big congratulations for all the winners from WA and good luck with the nationals!

sorry about the pic Albert ;D ;D have tagged your pic along with Gary from Gala in same photo.
big screen was a pain, we couldnt turn off lights without shutting the whole place down so the screen quality really suffered.
Great weekend though with some brilliant performances all round :) :)
I loved Gabes performance it was so vibrant with some more experience under his belt he should excel next year ;)

Yeah, Gabe looked so cool under those conditions. He completed the comp with only 40 seconds left i think... which was fantastic. Congrats.
Felt sorry for the others who did their best. They must be kicking themselves all their practice before the comp resulted in a few nerves during the comp which must have affected their performance.
Albertg, would have been great if i introduced myself to you if i knew where you were.
Greenman, youd look alright with a cap worn backwards and a bunch of bling bling around your neck ;D

I think the level of involvement by some of the bigger players (just my limited observations) and the detail and showmanship that seems to be required, in addition to lots of pre planing and practices. May be a bit over whelming for some up this way. After all, we do tend to be a bit more laid back and less inclined to follow the accepted norms.

I can think of a couple that might be up there - as to skill sets... But having the full support and backing of employers along with the time that is required; is not always so easy...

We often hear and see stuff about Coffee comps, Training and the shows that happen down south; but QLD is often light on in this area...

Thus I guess we reap what we sow :-/

OR that one or two players will sign up at the last second as part of their strategy to unsettle the others.

NO.... While I will support and love to watch some...

I think many issues and some scoring, have over stepped certain boundaries. For some is clearly focused on "upping the acting and drama" side VS real coffee skills. But then, so many are that close, one needs something to separate the top 3 .....

Besides, I make coffee for my palate and not others. My focus is on the kitchen and family. In addition my palate is in a state of change (having stopped smoking - for teh moment) and even instant -made right, is almost OK - While lots of espresso and some expresso places just shock me with strange flavours.

    Now BOT...

oh yeah, just wondering what coffee was used for the coffee cart on the 2nd day? i think Jason Robinson of Esprezzo made ours. we had one as a latte / flat white and absolutely loved it. and on top of that it was $2/cup!

the competitors were taking their comp blends out to the foyer, it may have been Jasons or one of the other competitors coffees--they were all great, especially Jeremys blend with the Nekisse!! :)

Anyone heading to the Nationals at the Gold Coast this year?
All booked and ready to go! Should be another tough year for the Baristas and another good one for the spectators.

Cool thanks Ashleigh, great to see some new faces in the finals too.

Surprised no one had uploaded any pics yet. Ill be sure to take a camera to the Nationals and will post plenty of pics with any luck.

Those photos are only from day two. Samuel Ho from Gigante Coffee who took photos last year at Nationals has photos from both days of competition. He uploaded them to Facebook but doubt snobs would be able to view them.

Goodness, that place reminded me of the Perth Town Hall!! :o except for the carpets.

Thanks for pics. Looking forward to more.

Hopefully by late January, theres less water around in Q/land for the Nationals...

    Hello!

The NSW state comp was held last weekend at Numero Uno Roastery. It was a great day, but a very hot and humid one.

Alex Strathis won first, with Tim Goonan second and Salavatore Magro third. The rest of the top six are Andrew Morton, Lloyd Thom and Sam Sgambellone.

Sam Sgambellone took out the cupping comp with the competition coming down to the last cup.

Congratulations to Alex and Sam, and all the best for the finals.

Some photos are up here if youre interested:

Some great photos there Sanch, I love the short depth of field shots with the 100/2.8 macro.

Congrats to the winners and to those that came close, I hope to see you in the open heats next weekend in QLD!

Was there a latte art comp (or was everyone too scared of Habib?)

Oh yeah, thanks for sharing too.
