Re: CSR Golden Bean Roasting Competition 2010 - 2011

Thanks for the congratulations and my congratulations also to all who won medals, including Coffee Craft who I dont think have had a mention above.

I know and respect the fact that entering competitions doesnt suit everyone, and I also know its not an easy thing to submit a coffee that you are passionate about and have it scrutinised in such a way. I do however encourage everyone to have a go, and if you can, attend the event as well. I met heaps of terrific and interesting people in a relaxed atmosphere.

The event was incredibly well organised, and my special thanks to all the people, especially the BariSTARS, that pumped out the coffees. They worked hard and really are true professionals.

A huge thanks to Mark of Coffee Roasters Australia and Chris from Talk Coffee. I regard both as dear friends, and not only has Mark supplied me with Osman, my Has Garanti roaster, but both Mark and Chris have challenged my views on roasting with the feedback provided whenever Ive sent coffee for them to try.

    This year we won:
Silver - Espresso (Defibrillator - a blend of Brazil Daterra, Sulawesi Toraja, PNG Kimel and an Indian parchment robusta)
Bronze - Single Origin (our Jamaica Blue Mountain Mavis Bank Estate)
Bronze - Australian (Mountain Top Estate)
Bronze - Filter (Vortex - a new blend consisting of Brazil Daterra and JBM)

I hope Im not lecturing, but would like to share some things that I hope will encourage home roasters. The last 12 months has seen me venture more into the technical aspects of roasting. Studying a text, measuring with an instrument, or using sensory tools will help. Dont get stuck in a rut - there are a gazillion ways to roast the same raw coffee. And above all, believe in yourself - if I can do it, you can too!

    Cheers
    Den :)

Now I have a huge list of coffee beans to work through! I want to try as many award winning blends as I can as next year goes on.

Just out of interest, which blend won the awards from Coffeesnobs? It just says the blend was "coffeesnobs" and thats it.

Edit: just read Andys first post.

Congratulations to all the Medal winners at the Golden Bean. So much talent, its humbling.

We are all overwhelmed here at Mahalia Coffee with my win at the CSR Golden Bean - especially me. Was not expected. Thank you to my hubby, Jamie and staff that made me enter this year, Dean at Expobar for his kind words, Greg at AMC, and Andrew at Coficom. You guys just rock.
A HUGE THANK YOU to all at Coffee Culture as they have made our year at Mahalia Coffee. What an or-some event. I so missed out.......

In Australia we have such passionate, decided, single minded people working in our industry. They are a constant reminder to me in keep chasing that perfect cup. I just love roasting coffee.

Oh, sorry to correct you Chris, but I have been roasting on a Diedrich IR24 for the past two years. I sold my Has Garanti. I had that baby for about three years, and it was a fantastic coffee roaster to learn the fundamentals of our craft.

Well Id better get back to my coffee roasting as have got orders to fill! WOHO

    Mahalia

Well done to all involved at The Golden Bean, Port Macquarie 2010.
The biggest coffee comp in the world, I hear?
Hats off to the organisers and the efforts of the Baristas.
It seems to me that all you need to win a medal is:
An unquenchable desire to roast great coffee.
A burning desire for someone to experience great coffee.
A Has Garanti roaster and be a Coffee Snob member or sponsor.
This forum is helping the whole world of coffee lovers, enjoy a better cup of coffee.
Lets all go for gold in everything we do in coffee.
Im planning a trip to Robe SA (Mahalia) and Yatala QLD (Supreme Roasters)
Cheers and Thanks for a better brew

Well done all. Plenty of new faces there and was good to swap the coffees during the day with some beer at night ;D

Its all about having a go, making new friends and celebrating the year with other people in the industry.

Wanted to say thanks to Andy for operating such a great forumn that encourages people to share their thoughts and experiences in relation to coffee. Forumns such as Coffee Snobs and events such as the Golden Bean do great things for the industry. Hopefully we will see some of the up and coming home roasters break into the commercial scene with entries in the years to come.

    Mark
