Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Wah, Im not going to be able to make it, after all! :( Petes volunteered for the weekend to join the "Blaze Aid" crew and go and help farmers with fencing, etc that were flood affected, so Ill need to stay home and kiddie-sit.

Rats! Still, I guess its a small sacrifice in return for helping out the Qld Farmers, most of whom didnt have flood insurance because no insurance company would cover it. Poor buggers. :-[

Have a great day and Ill be thinking of you all (and probably watching from the Live Feed).

    Cheers

Was hoping to be able to attend..

But family and work (on call) has meant I wont be on site...

However my support for all is still on the table and live feeds and Twitter will be in use. Will look forward to some good pics from those that get to attend.

Thats a shame that we wont have Di and Mark here this year but I can understand.

It will be interesting to see what impact the floods have on the Food & Wine side of the show too. It was strange flying into the Gold Coast today, it really looks like "business as usual" everywhere here the bulk of the floods were only an hour up road.

A few pics from the event.

No much time shooting today as we spent most of the day shopping for cups and irish coffee glasses. Seems a big box of official cupware went for a walk and the Latte Art and Coffee In Good Spirit competitiors had nothing to use.

A couple of teaser pics, some of CSr Peter and the ibrik comp...

Some dodgy looking judges (ibrik tech judges).

There was also a home roasting demostration in a hottop...
    by Greg Pullman !

Well its 8pm so I better go grab some dinner before it gets too late and I endup with a 7-11 microwave pie.

Tomorrow Im entered in the Ibrik comp at 2pm, should be great fun.

Also really looking forward to seeing more of the competitors on stage, will take plenty of pictures and post some up tomorrow night.

What on earth is an ibrik (well, apart from what AM calls his iPhone)???

Beware, Andy, Ive left instructions on Facebook with a certain CSer to give you a big sloppy kiss from me so beware of long tall streaks of pelican doo-doo with lips puckered! ;D

And youre more than welcome to some dinner at our place if you end up a bit coffeed out and at a loose end on Monday night. Not offended at all if you dont, but thought Id put the offer out there if youre twiddling your thumbs...

    Cheers

    For everyones information
The Ibrik or Briki is probably the first purpose made utensil for coffee making

And the design is still in use to this day

I have a few different sized Ibriks along with a few sets of the demi cups that one uses to drink Greek/Turkish coffee

All stitches are holding up OK so far AM *

    You never know about history
Who would have thought that the first Macs are worth more now than when first released
Could be the same for the IBrick *;)

Anyhow just thought I would post to say I am still alive

Well done, Andy...and loved the comment on not being able to talk and do things at the same time... ;D

A quick question about the judging of the Barista Comps - why do the judges always dredge the spoon through the caps/lattes before drinking them? Im assuming that its to check the density of the milk foam layer, but is this the case?

Also, are there any comps around where it is solely based on Sig Drinks and where do I sign up to be a judge??? YUMMO!!! :D

    Cheers

Checking the depth of the foam ie is it a cap or fw!

Thanks, Brett, I thought that was the case, but thought Id better check. How do the judges resist licking the spoon afterwards (I definitely cant at home!!!)

Another hectic day at the comps, great fun though.

I spent the morning taking photos at the "Latte Art Bar". *Its a new component of the 2011 Latte Art rules for the semi-finals.

Each of the 4 open heat competitors had 10 minutes on the machine to pour a signature drink. *Photos were taken of all the drinks and then they selected the one to be submitted to the judges for scoring. *Australia is the first place in the world to run these new rules so it was exciting to see how it panned-out.

These are then judged behind closed doors and the scores are added to their onstage performance.

The 4 selected pictures are below:

The winner of the open heats (stage and bar combined scores) was Daniel from SA who won the 1 place up for grabs in the Latte Art Final tomorrow.

Thanks Di.... and the comment was true, blokes just dont multitask well.
    ;)

Before the Latte Art Bar section finished I had a tap on the shoulder to say that my ibrik demo was being bought forward 2 hours, giving me about 20 minutes to get ready.

AAAGGGHHHH, I had planned on going back to the hotel to get changed, I didnt have the cups and coffee yet and none of the spices and stuff were ready. After flapping my arms around for the whole 20 minutes I was on stage, flustered and "off the deep end".

A huge shout-out to CSr Peter (Del Pietro) for providing the ibriks and the burners and getting them up on stage for me.

Another huge shout-out to Vladimir from Coffee Secrets for sourcing the Yemen coffee and the beautiful demi cup set that I used.

Without both those guys I would have had to tap dance for 20 minutes instead.

It was great fun and Ill happily share the secret sig drink with CSrs. We might have to get some brewing at the next pickup point too.
    :)

Have a look at what I spotted on stage, its the ultimate barista nerd kit. A serious case full of everything Pullman including baskets, spacers and Barista Tamp handles.
    8-)

Also spotted was Greg teaching some bloke called Reg how to roast in the Hottop. ;D

The open heats of the cup tasting was also run.

Two full heats and the winner was Ben Bicknel with a perfect 8 out of 8.
He takes the 1 remaining place in the final 6 tomorrow afternoon.

    Should be an exciting final.

The end of the Barista finals and the top six have been announced.

They all go into the final tomorrow to select the National champion who will represent Australia in Bogota, Colombia.

CS Site Sponsor Veneziano would have to seriously happy with the results, with all 3 of their Baristas making it into the final they make-up half the final 6. Erin Sampson, Craig Simon and Jean Paul (JP) Sutton all compete tomorrow.
    Awesome effort.

Re: AASCA Australian Specialty Coffee Championships 2011 - Broadbeach Queensland

The Latte Art finals are run under new rules too.

Theres a "spinning wheel" that selects the:

    Design in a Mac.
    Design in the Latte.
Which Cup the designer drink is in.

Below are the 3. The Mac is a double heart, the Latte is a complex fine heart with a double rosetta on the sides and the cup is a 170ml bowl.

I promise to take more pics of all the finals tomorrow, now its time for a bite and a snooze.

Woot! Thats great - I really liked Craig, he had a great style and was enjoyable to watch. Go JP, our local fave! No Will - a bit of a shocker!

BTW - I loved the fact that Fiefy was your assistant for your performance, too!

I noticed you were being judged for your Ibrik stuff - was this a competition also and, if so, is it just an internal Australia thing or, if you win, you compete overseas as well?

Ah, rats, I wish I was going to be there tomorrow... :(

    Cheers

Will made the final, (in the middle of the pic above). He won the Tassie states and won through the semis today.

Yeah, shes always a good sport. She had the same 20 minute warning and had to put-up with me stressing-out getting ready. She did a great job of serving and the new dress really looked the part too. Oh... and the Turkish Delight, semi dried apricots and Baklava were all yummo.

Yes, but I didnt see the score sheets yet (will try to tomorrow). It was demo event, run under the World Ibrik Championship rules.

We hope to have a lots of state entries next year and then a National competition too. I really like that it will give a chance of opening-up the coffee contest to a wider audience and Im sure even between CSrs we could get enough interest if there was a trip to Venice* up for grabs

(*Hot Rumour... the next WBC will be Venice)

Runs off to get Pete to fabricate her an Ibrik to practise on... ;)

Ah, thats good - it didnt seem like the Nationals without Will there. Gotcha (light bulb goes off above my head), I thought you were saying that the three above from Vs were the only ones for today going through and the others were made up from the previous State Comps. I didnt realise that the photo were all the finalists, I thought it was just a line up of who had competed today, as they were awarding the three the finals results. Yep, had blond streaks put in my hair the other day, and its showing! ;D

Have a good rest tonight - wave to the camera tomorrow, Ill be watching again!

Woo-hoo, Luca won the Cup Tasting at long last! *Well done, Luca! *[smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Matt Perger won the Barista Championship - good stuff! Kirby won the Latte Art, just pipping Fiefy at the post by one point - consolations, Fiefy, you were still a winner to me and congratulations to Kirby!

Man, all the giveaways of coffee, etc this year that I missed out on... :(

Hmmm, umm thanks I think Di. *
I had a quick look but dodgy internet in the hotel means its pretty unwatchable (which might be a blessing). *It was all good fun and I had lots of great feedback on the coffees and a few tips and tricks to add to it next time.

It was a huge weekend for sure.

Great performances by everyone from the Epic event management that made it run like clockwork to the AASCA team that ran the show to the competitors that were all amazing on the stage, it was a great thing to be a part of.

Of course, huge congrats to all the winners, it will be great to see you all represent Australia in Colombia and in the Netherlands.

I have tons of photos to upload if people want to see em? *
Let me know what you want to see from today and Ill post them up tomorrow after sorting and resizing them.

Twas my first time present at a coffee championship and I must say I found it really interesting. The skill level of all competitors was amazing. Not a bad Food & Wine show overall, either!

    Congrats to CSers involved :)

If Im not mistaken, photo AASCA2011-5334.jpg is Craig Simons stepped signature drink. This is the final step of the beverage with espresso being poured over a cream mixed with blood orange jam.

Great to see Kirby get the win.

Shes extremely passionate and works extremely hard at her craft so its awesome to see her get some recognition.

I dropped in to The Maling Room this arvo to congratulate her and have the newly crowned Australian Latte Art champion make me a latte. ;D
We coffee loving Melburnians are very lucky to have such easy access to such a talented bunch of baristi.

Congratulations to all of the winners and competitors, the standards just keep getting better and better.
Special mention to Ronald Ngo from WA. Ron came second in the WA championships in his second year of competition, came over to the opens and got into the top six--brilliant effort Ron, were all very proud of you :) :) :) :D :D :D
