Win a Coffeelab Tamper at First Pour

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi All,

Steve from Coffeelab Design sent us a few tampers to give away and the competitions are nearly at an end, so I thought that Id post a quick note just in case anyone wanted to enter our competitions.

Competition 1: This is a simple raffle; if you have bought anything from us, just send me a PM at this username and Ill draw a winner out of a hat on the 25th.

Competition 2: OK, I actually got a little bit more creative for this one. I have created a 600g blend and put it in a jar. Guess which four beans I have used and in what ratio, fill in the form, stick it in the jar and Ill work out who was the closest on the 25th.

Hint: The blend uses beans commonly found in peoples versions of the Malabar Gold blend. All of the beans used are from the drawers opposite the sample roaster.

    Happy guessing,

    Luca

Sure; why not? They can even roast them. Probably a good idea to remove the entry forms first, though ;P

    Joe Wins The Tamper!

Our super-high-tech raffletron 6000 has selected a winner. Congratulations go to CS member Joe for winning the Coffeelab tamper! I suggest that you start staring at the above picture to work out which colour youd like.

The winner of the "guess the blend" competition actually got it pretty darn close ... and, surprisingly, was not a CS member. Grrr! Oh well, well get him to sign up!

    The blend was:

    50% Mandheling
    25% Malabar
    12.5% Pearl Mountain
    12.5% AB Parchment Robusta

... ie. some sort of variant of the "Malabar Gold" blend. I think that Chris version is more like:

    50% Malabar
    25% Aged Mandheling
    15% Robusta
    10% Pearl Mountain

... or something to that effect.

    Cheers,

    Luca

Congratulations there Joe, so what colour you going for? The raw looks good in the pic (although it is on top of the purple labelled box - Luca is human after all ;)).

The raw looks great, but you need to remember that it is an aluminium handle. One of my raws has a few scratches on it, probably from being chucked around with something sharp or something; the other one is fine. I could probably sandpaper the scratches out or something, I guess, but I dont mind battle scars!

The half raw/half purple one that I gave to Cassie looks like it did when we got it. The blue handled one at Maling Room is good as new and St Alis looked fine last time I saw it. So the anodized handles are possibly more durable than the raw.

    Cheers,

    Luca

The metal grey one gets my vote.

The raw one sounds a little like trouble; the colours, while nice, would stand out a bit too much against my 10 year old Classic. :)

In any case, whatever colour it comes in, itll be replacing a black plastic tamper Ive been using for over 20 years...I must say, Im getting curiouser and curiouser...

21 years?? Says a lot about the durability of plastic. Enjoy the new tamper, Joe, and let us know if you notice a difference with it. :)

I think that that tamper should be enshrined! 21 years is incredible!

Joe was kind enough to pose for the obligatory photo of the tampers maiden tampage, so I thought Id post it up here.

Thankyou to everybody who has come in to support us during our first months. One of the joys of having such an oddly remote location is that we only really see the truly faithful at the top of the mountain ;P I just hope that were living up to everyones hopes and expectations.

Id also like to send a special shout-out to one of our greatest supporters, Steve from Coffeelab Design for facilitating these competitions and for the very thoughtful custom tampers that Cassie and I are using. Cassie, in particular, was delighted as hers is actually the first tamper that she herself has owned.

    Cheers,

    Luca

Re: Win a Coffeelab Tamper at First Pour

Well, its been 10 days since I started using this tamper and I must say, its been a bit of an eye opener.

The old tamper, with which I must say I was happy, now seems somewhat imperfect. :-/ *

Tamping for all those years meant tamping three or four times (middle, to the left, to the right, top and bottom) because the tamper was a couple of mm smaller than the portafilter. For the life of me, why dont they make it fit like its supposed to?

Now with the Coffeelab, I press down just once and its in the machine! Apart from being quicker, it also tends to pour more evenly through both spouts.

Another difference is that the old tamper lived in a drawer; the new one lives outside *;)

I didnt get red cos the grinder is more a burnt orange than red. Very trendy in the mid-late 80s... ::)
