Coffee Fundraising

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
My oldest Son, Junior Grendel Number One (a.k.a Alec) is Autistic.

This gives us plenty of extra work, and Mrs Grendel has to do lots of running around to various therapy sessions.

We receive therapy from the WA Autism Association at their Early Intervention Centre. Last year Mrs Grendel ran a fundraiser for the centre by holding a scrapbookers ‘Crop Day’ (ok a ‘what’? go here to Mrs Grendel’s Blog to immerse yourselves into the weird world of scrapbooking). It was hugely successful in raising a lot of badly needed cash for the Centre.

Not to be outdone I have decided that while she holds her scrapbooking event this year I am going to have a coffee drive (a lot like a lamington drive only with less cake and coconut).

I am going to get my hands on as many green beans as I can, get a few keen snobs together and roast coffee.

I am going to buy some bags to pack it in, label it and sell it at $7.50 a bag. Given that I am covering the cost of the bags and about 10kg of beans I should be able to deliver about $300 to the Autism association.

However I reckon I can do better. I need the help of some snobs however – and I’d rather make a fun day out of it anyway.

First I’d love some help in roasting – we can pick a day and go for it, or perhaps even find someone with a 5kg roaster and have some really big fun.

Secondly I’d love any ‘odds and sods’ beans that people may have lying around to add to a ‘pot-luck’ blend to roast. I have had a lot of success with these (drinking one right now as it happens!) and any more coffee than the 10kg I’ll put it to start it off would be a real bonus.

Thirdly – and this is a biggy, I am chasing stuff to raffle off at Mrs Grendel’s scrapbookers day so if anyone, site sponsors included want to donate it would be gratefully accepted, however I do also understand that there may be more local calls on your generosity than WA organisations.

The WA Autism Association are happy to provide a covering letter regarding the official nature of the event (as a fundraiser endorsed by them) should anyone need it.

The Crop Day is on June 23 and I’d like to have to roasting day about a week before to give me time to distribute coffee people have ordered, but also to have some that will be in prime condition the day of the Scrapbookers Crop.

Admins – if this post is inappropriate or needs shifting, well do your stuff! (but I’m hoping it is ok!)

Oh, and if any coffeesnobs also happen to be scrappers - or the partner of a scrapper, the link to the scrappers event is: http://http...om/

Im absolutely disinterested in scrapbooking, but the coffee idea sounds great. *Ill be happy to send some green beans your way.

Another thought occurs though - Andy, is it possible for the next bean bay to include an option for an amount of beans to paid for and sent to Grendel in the Perth delivery?

    Re: Coffee Fundraising

Bloody hell I wish Id thought of that! Nice Idea Viviane.

Whatever happens Id love some volunteers to help roast it - and another with a camera to document the day as I reckon it could be a major green bean event if I get it off the ground.

Ill be seeing the staff at the Autism Association tomorrow to talk to them about selling some packets through their office (Parents of kids with autism seem to be big coffee drinkers for some reason. . .)

Ill also be selling packs at work - got about 20 pre-sold there already after I had the idea during a team meeting (guess my mind wasnt on the work!)

Love to hear from any Perth snobs whod like to be in on the roasting day.

Sure thing mate - will be in touch.

Steven, I hadnt though about that aspect - Ill talk to Mrs Grendel and see what arrangements she made last time with the Austism Association for donations.

Our son was Non Verbal (about 20 words) but intensive speech therapy means he has now an above-average vocab. which constantly amazes us. Now if we can just work on the sensory and associated behavioural issues. . .

I have only completed my first roast yesterday and the roast turned out reasonably well i think (taste testing today). By June I should be a pro. ha ha ;D

I would like to help out as well. The weekend before on 16th and 17th June I am off work so this weekend would suit me great if this is the weekend that the roast off will be held.

    Keep me informed.

    Cheers

Sure, I think I can sort something out that would facilitate a donation system. Ill do some testing before the next BeanBay to make sure it works.

It will the best way to ensure that the kind thoughts dont get lost in freight costs.

    Nice idea.

    Grendel,

Since Perth is such a long long way from where I am, my contribution will also be through the beanbay.....

I have been exposed to many forms of disablity and understand the need for funding.

Its a great thing to do Grendel and Im sure youll get a heap of support, and maybe a small mountain of beans :o to roast your way through. My youngest sisters son is autistic and is now in his late teens.... took an extraordinary amount of work and commitment from his Mum and Dad (and young Shane too of course) but it has well and truly paid off. Hes now working with his Dad in the family business, doing very well and becoming quite the young gentleman and responsible citizen. All the best to you mate [smiley=thumbsup.gif],

Thank you to all those who were Green Bean donors from todays Bean Bay - and Thank you Andy and the mods for adding that option, arranging free freight, carrying sacks of coffee beans around, giving the bean bay mouth-to-mouth, cupping the varieties, etc, etc. . .

Is this going to continue over a few beanbays?

i would love to contribute but am unable to this time. We have a family history of Asbergers (another form of autism) and I know how tough it can be.

Next beanbay i will be able to donate some beans.

If it could continue until the May one Id be thrilled - May is when Autism Awareness week occurs and is also the main point for me to start selling the fundraiser coffee through until June 23. Between now and May I will do a few small batches to raise interest and get publicity and then in May we will have a big roasting and packing day to fill all the orders.

I think for this option, CS-ers could just PM Grendel and work it from there.... Dont want private details posted up in a public forum :o,

    Re: Coffee Fundraising

Twas great to see the CoffeeSnobs community pulling together to donate to a worthy cause during last weekends BeanBay.

Even better when the donations buy green beans that Grendel will roast (value add) for an even bigger return to the WA Autism Association. Surely we will beat Mrs Gendel’s scrapbooking this year.
    :)

Anyhows… the grand total raised was: $228.00 which has bought 30kg of very high grade Zambian AA beans which are now on their way to Perth.

I’m sure we will all follow the thread with great interest as it gets closer to the big roasting day.

Well done Grendel and well done CoffeeSnobs!

Grendel is going to be a very busy bloke indeed with all those beans :o.... might have to rope in a couple of helpers with their machines to take the heat off a bit :P. Kind of makes you feel good to see such strong support for a very worthy cause,

    Cheers,

    Re: Coffee Fundraising

Andy that is stunning! Thanks everyone - I am throwing in 10kg myself and a local roaster another 10kg so that is 50kg of beans to roast!

If I sell it for what I want to sell it at that will be roughly $1500!

    HUGE!

Also Presso have donated a Presso to Raffle which is another great addition - with the prize packs and beans you have all contributed I am hoping to crack the two grand mark, but honestly right now I am pretty stoked with having a starting point as good as this.

    Thank you all again.

    Gracias!

Well be roasting the first batch in April at this stage but before then Ill be taking orders!

Ill be doing some research to discover what might blend well with that Zambian - I have lots of Yirg and Tiger Mountain, and a local roaster has offered to donate some beans as well - I think I should be able to come up with a well rounded blend.

I spent several years as treasurer of my sons school P&C, heavily involved in fund-raising. If that doesnt make me dangerous I dont know what would. ;)

Seriously, I do know how brazen you have to be when youre raising money. I also didnt get any of the Zambian coffee, so this is my chance to try it. :D

Hmmmm - well for coffee snobs only Ill be offering a batch of Zambian as a Single Origin I think. For the Hoi Polloi and Nescafe drinkers that I am attempting to convert through my subversive coffee-education-program-cleverly-disguised-as-fundraising I shall prepare a blend.

I just had a bizarre thought though - Ill be selling the beans back to the people who donated them - double generousity. . .

I have all the beans for the roast!

    :D

Im going to start taking orders this weekend through till May. It is possible I might have two or three roasting sessions but Ill have to see how the orders flow. For Snob orders Ill set up something particular, as the local ones will be delivered to central points but Ill have to mail to my fellow snobs.

Once I have all the orders I can figure out how many bags I need to buy.

    Re: Coffee Fundraising

    Big news!

On monday I went to Fiori and using their small roaster we roasted a sample of the Zambian donated by Coffee Snobs.

We did a cupping on Thursday and it was outstanding - lovely african tones combined with a very pleasant acidity so rather than blend this one we are going to roast the lot as a single origin.

This means that my Yirg and the Tiger Mountain will be a seperate blend, and an extremely generous individual donation of coffee beans (and postage!) by MatthewG means that we can do a 3rd blend.

So far we have pre-sold about 10kg and are well on our way to my 40kg pre-sold target (20kg in reserve because well need a couple of kilos for the big day and the rest for late orders).

Ill keep you up to date with progress!

    Thank you.

    Re: Coffee Fundraising

With the assistance of Coffee Snobs, MatthewG and Fiori Coffee Roasters, I have 60kg of green coffee beans to roast and sell.

However, exclusive to Coffee Snobs I will be offering the first option on the Zambian Lupili Estate as a Single Origin - since it is snobs who will most likely appreciate its qualities.

The coffee will be roasted on May 7 and I will need to ship mail orders of the coffee the next day in express post packs to make sure it gets to people ASAP.

I have three sizes on offer - although if you want more than 250g I recommend that you buy it in several lots of 250g so that each batch can stay sealed until you are ready to use it.

I can also provide it ground for espresso or plunger, although I will carry out this activity grinding my teeth as well as the coffee (Mrs Grendel tells me I must be quiet and grind the coffee, but hey, Im a coffee snob!)

The coffee will be available in 250g ($7.50), 500g ($15) or 1kg ($30) packs. Postage will be in express post satchels so 500g or under will be $7.20 and 500g to 3kg will be $10.10.

For payment I can arrange a system like Andy uses for bean bay where you can pay directly into an account and I can send you an invoice.

Although the main delivery will be right after the roasting in May, re-orders of any remaining Zambian and our blends (thanks to Matthew G for the Huge bean donation) will be available until June 23.

For more information about the Coffee Drive, you can contact me on 0403 934 161 or at cafe.grendel@gmail.com. ‘Cupping’ notes about the Zambian Coffee for the roast can be found at http://cafe-grendel.blogspot.com/

Please order by May 1 to be included in the May 7 Roasting batch.

Thank you all for your support!

The big roast is on Monday - I have my list of snobs who have ordered some and I will make sure yours gets out in the first post available. Ill also be in touch tomorrow about how to pay for the coffee :)

Weve sold all of the CS donated Zambian and are well into my personal contributions and MatthewGs excess stock that he very generously sent me. If we do really well Ill end up buying some more beans at the roasters.

    Thanks to all who donated!
