WA Barista Championships ???

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Hi all...

Not sure if this is the right place for it ...

We noticed this is on in Perth this weekend, and were thinking we might pop in and check out the action. Does anyone know if there is a program of events, and anything in particular we should make an effort to check out.

We will probably end up in Perth on Saturday afternoon.

Thanks

I went along today - the championship was won by Nolan Hirte of Lemon Espresso in Claremont using a Five Senses blend - great showman and great Barista.

Somehow I ended up as official timekeeper. . .

Thanks for letting us know who won. We went along yesterday, and saw a few people .... we certainly learnt a thing or two just from watching - the people we saw differed greatly in their techniques & were all very talented.

We didnt really know what to expect - the competition time must be quite an intense 15 mins for the baristas.

The one thing it made me realise was how slow my Silvia is with steaming!!! Oh well - I can keep dreaming about my next machine ...

Ive done a brief write-up and posted some photos from the WA Barista Championships on my coffee blog: http://http://...es.html for anyone who want to have a look (or check out your competition in the Australian Championships!)

For anyone interested, the Aust. Championships will be in Adelaide this year and will include an OPEN class for those who want to compete but were unable to make it to a state championship. Well worth considering if you think you have the right stuff! (Which rules me out immediately!)

I dunno Grendel. I saw you up on the machine working your magic. Even with all the unmarked buttons on the La Marzocco

Yeah, you saw me up there taking 3 whole minutes to figure out WHICH button! That would be one fifth of my comp time.

I can see me fronting up to the judges with my tray: "Err, so which of you wanted the espress - sorry, only had time to make the one coffee..."

Yeah - we can go up to judges with lines like
"Look - youre never going to get through 3 drinks each. Plus that signature drink is WAY too fiddly. Flat whites all around?"

"Go away? Certainly".

Haha. Grendel you crack me up. But with you as official time keeper surely you could influence the time??? I mean what if you were helping a contestant to carry out a grinder and you accidently knocked the stop watch or something?

Yeah it is a very full on thing but it was a really good day seeing the baristas do their thing.
