    Kopi Luwak - $350/kg

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight

[s]After years of talking about Kopi Luwak coffee CoffeeSnobs have a chance to try it.

...well... only if enough people are interested.

There is 7kg of it available at (wait for it) $350 per kilo.

Apparently it sells for $50 a cup at a couple of places in Australia so the while the price is high it is still reasonable value (if you planned on drinking $50 a cup civit poo anyway)

So who wants some and how much do you want?

35 members @ 200gm each is all we need to tell the bean broker "YES"
    [/s]

We had a few (nuts) keen to try it my not quite enough.

    Maybe next time!

    Spot on. Good one TG.

Methinks this is taking recycling to unnecessary degrees.

Kopi Luwak may be twice as good as anything I have ever had (but I doubt it), but it definitely wont be thirty five times as good. Id rather spend $70 on something else, like 6 or 7 kg of green :)

At the risk of sounding like a super-snob, I have tried this coffee and can attest to the fact that it is totally different to other coffees - and no, my taste is not "in my a#se". *I really dont mean to offend anyone (though I havent been doing too well on that account recently) but think some of the remarks being made are similar to comparing:

    - sausages to steak
    - beer to champagne
    - mcdonalds to tetsuyas
    - instant coffee to whatever your favourite roast is

Theres no denying the price is outrageous...Andy, please put me down for another 200gm!

Youd think that everyone would be trying to breed the little civets. That would surely bring the cost down, and be somewhat affordable.

I have no doubt the quality is good, but you just cant justify that sort of price for something that had an extremely flat flavour profile.

Strangely enough, the place is in QLD and WA, but cant send Kopi Luwak to Australia due to quarantine restrictions.

I understand your point Dennis BUT as Matt G asked is it 35 times better?

I have yet to try Tets but will eventually because I perceive that Ill get value for my money.
I once ate at the restaurant that previously occupied that site and paid the exhorbitant price of $100 a head in the days where $40 - $50/h was an expensive meal.
Friends were aghast but it was worth it.
I can honestly say it was definitely more than twice as good as anything Id had to date.

But 35 times better has got to be impossible and therefore uneconomical. http://www.askoxford.com/concise_oed/uneconomical?view=uk

Funny you mention Tetsuyas. I had a trial there, and while it may be impressive, its just another kitchen, albeit nice and shiny, with fridges everywhere, and expensive food prep equipment. During my trial, I got to sample the various courses. They were nice, but I wouldnt be paying over a hundred bucks a head. Its simply a matter of preference. You go there either to be seen going there, or youre having a really special occasion.

In this case, is it really for enjoyment, or to be seen as having something exclusive?

    Re: Kopi Luwak - $350/kg

What? Coffee snobs too snobbish to try the most snobbish coffee out there?! Or not snobbish enough? Surely mere money doesnt enter into it...?

Put me down for 200g - I keep my standards low to avoid disappointment.

However, before placing the order, I think we would want to know if it is arabica, robusta, or a natural blend (i.e. 80% robusta!). We would also, of course, wish to be certain of the scatological origins of the product.

Oh, and since the outfit linked to above will sell greens at the same price as roasted, you could always rationalise that it was really only 10 times more expensive...

    Re: Kopi Luwak - $350/kg

I have to say, Id quite like to try it.

I guess the price reflects the low availability/supply of the coffee. Not really that its 35 times better. Its probably mainly economic forces, and possibly a peverse population, who have had a go at smoking shit, and now want to drink it.

Can we be assured that no civets were harmed in its making? No civet enemas in back room clinics. These are free range? Drug free?

How much is 200gm costing? Could I get it roasted?

    tmid.

    Re: Kopi Luwak - $350/kg

Thundergod - of course youre right - Im not suggesting its 35x better, like most things, the price is determined by the laws of supply and demand.

nunu - if youre having a dig, bring it on...I had a laugh...no one here knows me and I doubt anyone I might serve this coffee to, knows what it costs. Nor would I tell them...would you? So for me, its not all about exclusivity, but will happily admit that I like having things that are different, and yes, exclusive.

As for Tetsuyas, the place is world renowned because the food is unique, not because it has a shiny kitchen, etc. I understand this is not the case for you, given your preference is for bunny and pancakes.

    Re: Kopi Luwak - $350/kg

The price doesnt reflect whats in the cup. It is merely a reflection of the availability. The same can be said for certified JBM and Kona. Theyre not fantastic by any stretch of the imagination. The pricing is simply due to the fact that there isnt a huge supply available.

On the other hand, exclusive eating establishments are charging large prices not based on supply/demand, but quality of the experience. Its all about perceived value for money. If youre willing to pay, then so be it.

What Im getting at is that there is no justification other than limited supply of Kopi Luwak. Same goes with other expensive coffees. Theyre not necessarily better quality, just less quantity available.

The site did mention something about cleaning, its the dirt that is still on them that stops them from being brought into Australia.

Followed immediately by a full cleaning regime?

Im not averse to buying something thats expensive because of its exclusivity/rarity.
I bought my wife a bottle of Grange a few years ago and am waiting for her to deem an occasion worthy of its opening.
Ive always wanted to know if it tastes 20 times better than other good wine. *;)

    Re: Kopi Luwak - $350/kg

Well it appears that although there are a number of CSrs interested in trying this truely bizarre bean we wont get close to the 7kg order... in fact we only made it to about 1.5kg

So if it gets offered again in a smaller quantity (2kg) then we will revisit this thread.

On a personal note... PHEW! I was getting worried that I would have to try it.

    ;)

giggled like a schoolgirl - Surely 230 degrees is enough to destroy even the most persistant organisms that might inhabit a civet cats alimentary tract?

Handling the green (browny yellow) beans may not be my task of choice though.
