    Brisbane snobs big roast out

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Greater Brisbane Folk! Come on down!

At the last bean bay pick up, Belinda (aka Coretto) was flagging the idea of a Brisbane roast day. As noone else in the discussion had the space to hold such an event (in the case of bad weather) I offered the underneath of my house for the occasion.

This is your opportunity to show off your most Heath Robinson inspired roasting inventions. We promise to Ooh and Ahh at how clever and inventive you all are!
It would be great to see everyones setups though.

    SO... heres the plan.

    31st March Roasting Day
    Arrive about 11.30
    Roast show-offs until about
1.30 BBQ lunch (I can easily provide with say a gold coin donation) with BYO drinks
More roast show offs after lunch and people can stay as long as they like

There are some pros and cons to this plan (Ill let you decide which is which)...

:-?I live in Ipswich (about 45 minutes west of Brisbane)
:)We do a mean tandoori chicken on the BBQ as well as other food to suit all sorts (ie vegetarians and the like)
:-[We have no espresso machine (expect the presso) - plunger will be the brewing apparatus of choice on the day
    ;)Chocolate Espresso Cake
8-)You get to see THE ORIGINAL AND THE BEST coretto roaster in action (operated by the original and the best inventor)
:-/The underneath of our house isnt very glamourous but we can make it comfortable we also have a large backyard if the weather is fine (I feel silly saying that in the middle of a drought)

So... Roasting day fun for the whole family!

Seriously, it should be heaps of fun! Whos in? Any other ideas for the day? Any other venues (free!) that spring to mind?

    Discuss people!

    Cheers,

    Meg

Well count me in Meg! Wouldnt miss it.

I can bring a little old Breadmaker with a Heatgun pointed at it and throw some green beans in it and watch them spin round and round :)

Would love to see the Gene Cafe there, and maybe a Hot Top.

Yes, it does sound odd to mention a precaution for rainy weather. Especially in Brisbane. Whats rain? [smiley=vrolijk_1.gif]

    Tandoori chicken. Mouth waters [smiley=cheesy.gif]

I remember thinking the same thing when we had the NSW Roasting day here. It rained for the first time in months. We still had a great day though. I hope yours goes well too. :)

    Sounds like a plan Meg!

Great idea and I hope there is some good local support for it, should be a fun day out with plently of learning & sharing.

You never know, someone might "car boot" their coffee machine on the day too?

    Hello Meg,

Please count me in too.Of course the Iroast will be making the journey as well.
As for that other minor problem.....

from Meg-e :-["We have no espresso machine (expect the presso) - plunger will be the brewing apparatus of choice on the day"
from Andy "You never know, someone might "car boot" their coffee machine on the day too?"
All Ill say at the moment is "Watch this space"..............further clues to follow mid week.

    Cheers,
    Ken.

Well we started a sourdough starter today so Im hoping that Ill have a loaf of that to try as well! For snob feedback and critique naturally!

Glad you can make it turn-on-giotto-with-mobile-phone guy!

Doh, Ive just be informed that the 31st coincides with the celebration of the day of birth of on of my children!

Hey hey, wait a minute, I know what you are thinking. Its not like that. The ACTUAL birthday is a few days after the 31st, the party for said occasion was mooted some months ago and I simply must attend(who else will wear the silly clown suit?)

Sorry Meg-e, et al. I was so looking forward to seeing the under belly of a real live Ipswich abode.

Ill try and book the occasion in as well. I may even be able to persuade the rest of the family to come as well (well at least mum and bub) even though they are not coffee drinkers and only just barely put up with my coffee-related exploits.

Besides Im looking at going to a corretto system pretty soon and would like to see it in action. Ive got so many nice beans that need to be.... dealt with.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

Does anyone have a laptop computer with a serial port that they could bring along?

This would be to show the datalogging for the roasting in the Corretto, (or anything that takes a data probe really).

    Thanks

    Welcome MayFever!

Do come to our roast day! What better way to get "right into it"!

Andy, the problem with secret handshakes is the potential for social awkwardness when one goes to do the secret handshake on the mistaken presumption the other person is also aware of it.

Perhaps a flower in the lapel is a better bet? Then again, who has a lapel these days... goodness its fraught isnt it! Maybe now is the time to mention CS merch again! :)

    Cheers,

    Meg

Even worse when you launch towards a person for a handshake to discover they have no right hand to reciprocate (actually happened to me!, Well.. I suppose it really happened to them, but you know what I mean).

    tis soooo predddy Ken.

I look forward to seeing it splattered with coffee grinds in the photos of the roast-out.

...and then the "I got it home and cleaned it for 2 hours" photo as the finale of the series... "before / during / after"

Tis a great looking new toy though.

Id swap Belinda but you dont want anything Ive got!

maybe you could repost that post here and start again? I know Bruce was interested in swapping with someone but I think hes been a bit busy lately.

Ive got some Tanzanian and Honduras from the bean bay before last that Id be willing to swap and I have heaps of decaf if anyone would like to try it.

I also have some Brazil Rios Minos from my starter pack that I cant seem to do good things with. Id be willing to give that away to see if someone else can do something better.

Id swap for anything I dont have already but if someone has some PNG peaberry - well Id be your best friend for a bit!!

    Excellent points Belinda!

Im giggling at how many things I havent thought of! Never fear there will be electricity, food and drink on saturday. I figure things can only get better from there!

Fan-wise.... um is the fan particularly special? I have two cheap pedestal fans if that will help? Im not too keen to pull them apart as they are the only ones we have right now!

let me know if there is anything else people need! Theres a good chance I wont have thought of it!

Re: Brisbane snobs big roast out

Im the first one back from the Bisssie roast-a-thon. Wow! Meg is a superb chef and made what can only be described as an awesome spread. Bellisimo...

Roasters on display were a Gene Cafe (impressive), Iroast, The original Corretto, An automated HG/SS bowl with windscreen wiper motor stirring, and a Crazy Popper with extra air assistance. A couple of fan assisted bean coolers were also on display.

The cool thing about the windscreen wiper /SS bowl roaster was the quick and simple bean ejection into a sieve for fast effective cooling.

The first cab off the rank was some Red Sea blend that I bought to try out in the Gene Cafe. The roast was pretty even for a mix of beans of very different sizes. It was pulled when it got into 2nd crack, but to our surprise, first crack wasnt audible at all.

Ken also bought his new BZ02. Its a great machine. The vibe pump was so quiet that I had trouble hearing it at all.

And for desert, out came Megs legendary coffee cake. I also supplied some rather intense mocha truffles.

All in all, I think most had a great time. We certainly did.

Thanks Meg for all your time and effort in arranging the event.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

    Hi TG,
Meg and Daniel had their cameras there so Im sure some pics will be revealed soon.

    * I can only agree with Mark. Many thanks Meg for making us so welcome and providing the great feed. Thanks Mark for those great truffles.I was forced to grab a few for the trip home. What a terrible shame that was.

    * I really enjoyed seeing the Gene Cafe (lust lust lust) and the ingenious home brew roasters. The Corretto, the popper with turbo charged assistance and theSS bowl and windscreen wiper motor all ran well. It makes me want to break the Iroast so I can build something.Well maybe just have a go at building something. It certainly looks like fun and great roasting too.

    * Everybody had a play with Bezzie and we found the original double basket not as good as the La Marzocco double I got with my GP tamper. We were able to get a slightly larger dose which worked better.Ill experiment more with them both and post results later in the week.

All in all a terrific time was had by all.Plans are already being made for the next event.Perhaps as Mark suggested we can all bring along a few different roasted beans and experiment with blending. No doubt itll be as much fun as today was.
Thanks to all involved in making the day so successful and such fun.

    Cheers,
    Ken.

Sounds like great fun. Even better that there was a mix of gear to fiddle with.

    Well done northern CSrs!
