    Celebrate the Bean - 25th March 2007 - Melbourne

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight

It appears that Celebrate the Bean is on again this year. After getting bumped off the list last year for the Commonwealth Games and nearly getting buried by the swimming championships this year it has some how mostly gone unnoticed.

Renaming it to "wicked sunday" and calling it "wicked beans" nearly made it obsure enough that no one would know what it was about!

    :o

Anyway, Ill prob drag the family down there for the day and Im sure we will run into some CSrs and sponsors!

See below for the marketing blurb...

    [hr]
The Festivals celebration of coffee - Celebrate the Bean - will make a welcome return along the River Terrace, featuring a showcase of Melbournestop coffee companies, coffee machines and artisan coffee roasters including Australian Estate Coffee, bean ground & drunk, Coffex, Coffico Coffee, Del Zotti, Eureka Coffee, Five Senses Coffee, Gigante Coffee, Gravity Espresso, Grinders Coffee, Jasper Coffee, Lazumba, Mayan Coffee & Xocolate, Monte, Romcaffe, Segafredo and Vittoria.

    Hi all,

I just wanted to point out that the Victorian Barista Championships will not be held at Celebrate the Bean this year. Instead, it is on on the same day (!) at docklands. I have posted about it here: http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1174041682/0#0

Hope to see you there, Andy!

    Cheers,

    Luca

Yeah- amazing isnt it...Melbourne Food and Wine seem to have a wonderful ability to turn good things to "merde" (as the French might say...). They lost the Bean Alliance sponsorship and Coffex has taken it on....

I seriously doubt that this event will have anything whatsoever to do with good coffee...Bring on the superauto home machine and underdosed 10 sec extraction swill...Good to see Five Senses there and Im sure that the Bean Alliance will try hard with their brands- which represent 25% of the exhibitors....

We noticed the "special list" too and thought it was a good indicator of how much they care.

We need to orchestrate a CS takeover bid [smiley=evil.gif]...How good would it be to see real coffee people involved?

    Now a residential paradise.....hahha

Anyways, politics indeed. Something to do about the milk sponsor for VBC clashing with Celebrate the beans sponsor.....just a whisper though ::)

Re: Celebrate the Bean - 25th March 2007 - Melbour

Had a very, very quick walk-by the Riverbank where the bean was being celebrated this morning.

I must say I am getting tired of these endless weekend "happenings" around Federatioin Square, which are labled as "festivals" A tressle table in a tent does not a festival maketh, I say.

All my eyes saw was a row of tented stands, most selling hot coffee, coffee beans and one or two selling Krups and the like.

Now, I venture that I could go to Myer any day of the week, in air conditioned comfort, and celebrate the bean in there if thats all it takes.

If you go to a cafe with solid walls and a door, its a non-event. If you go to Batman Avenue by the Yarra and buy a latte from a tent, then its a festival. Huh?

2mcm, you did well to save your money.

Yes I went for look too.

Midday by the yarra and the place was really buzzing with people shuffling along shoulder to shoulder the sound of bad latino karaoke (well to my tone deaf ears it was).

First impression was wow, what a turnout!

As robusto mentioned, Gaggia, Breville and Sunbeam were all there to demo their lastest wares.

For the time I was there I had 3 x double espresso from 3 different vendors.

First was from Australian Estate Coffee. The double was WAY over sized and think in body but tasted like it had some promise if poured better. The owner was passionate about his beans and the production of the coffee but not the espresso machine.

Worth a second look on taste alone if you get a chance.

Next was Five Senses. Coffee was roasted at Mornington and the shot was pulled by a lass from Perth on a Synesso who flew across just to work Celebrate the Bean. Crema was lacking but the roast and the body were good.

Last doubleshot was from Jasper Coffee. Best pour of the 3 vendors that I tried, great crema layer and a good sized double shot. The gotcha here was that it had no taste. Hmmm... did I over do it? Tastebud overload? I took another sip... nothing. Aroma... near zero. Sigh.

    [hr]

So as I type this Im home again and sitting beside me is my second double shot of mondooned peaberry, the first went down way too fast and I needed a second shot to many sure it was as good as I thought. Ahhhh... home roasted coffee is great, a "coffee festival" at my house every day of the week!

    :-)

One thing that really stood out was although the crowd was huge and the vendors many I can only see one person with a coffee in all the above crowd shots. Weird eh!

Seems that there were plenty of people not there for the coffee (something to do with the lack of coffee promotion I assume). For three coffees I queued behind a maximum of one person. It would be interesting to know what sort of sales figures the stalls had in comparison to Celebrate the bean a couple of years ago.

The Synesso and antique Rancilio were the only interesting machines there.

I have shots on a synesso regularly - there is usually only a thin layer (1-2mm) of crema, although the crema there is a terrific colour. It has never detracted from the shot for me though.
