    Counter attack ... Juan Renshaw, coffee maker to the stars in his cafe at Fox Studios, is arguing the right to choose his beans.
    * *
    In one corner of the courtroom is the cafe to the stars at Fox Studios; in the other, the big guys who peddle the brand Vittoria.

    The fight over coffee beans began in April, 2002, when the couple who own Espresso Fox - which brought caffeine hits to the actors in Moulin Rouge, The Matrix and Mission: Impossible 2 - no longer wanted to use Vittoria.

    Evidence is expected to be called in a Supreme Court hearing that began yesterday that those on set were not particularly enamoured with the bean - someone from The Matrix allegedly said it was "crap".

    The cafe had signed an agreement in May, 2001 with Cantarella Bros Pty Ltd that it would buy Vittoria coffee in exchange for the loan of a machine and grinder.

    But Cantarella Bros says it was a three-year, binding contract and has sued Maia Andreasen and her husband, Juan Renshaw, for loss of profits.

    Cantarella argues it was an "implied term of the agreement" - through discussions - that the couple would purchase all the coffee they needed from Cantarella, estimated at 25 kilograms a week.

    This "regime of exclusivity" was standard industry practice, Cantarellas barrister, James Stevenson, SC, said.

    A former Cantarella sales supervisor who helped clinch the deal conceded there was no "three-year term" specified, only start and finish dates. Alfredo Pasquariello denied this was because the couple had said they did not want to be bound by a term, and said it was because the start date could only be determined once the equipment was delivered, which was four days later.

    In documents tendered to the court, the couple says the dates May 18, 2001 and May 18, 2004 were put in after they signed up. Cantarella does not dispute putting in the 25 kilograms later.

    The defence barrister, Desmond Fagan, SC, put to Mr Pasquariello that on the day the couple signed - May 14 - he had told Ms Andreasen that "theres no need to be worried about the agreement - youre taking this too seriously its just a piece of paper to satisfy the legal department".

    Mr Pasquariello denied that.

    Mr Fagan said: "I suggest to you that the reason why you would omit to get their signatures on the document with three years written in there was because you hadnt got that agreement." Mr Pasquariello replied: "I deny that."

    The hearing continues.

    Hmmm... nasty. It was also 3 years ago so I guess the real winners have been the legal teams and anyone who doesnt sell "Vittoria Crap" <--- Matrix staff words not mine. ;D

    It will be interesting to see how this one pans-out.
