Australian Latte Art Championship 25th May

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Heard on the grapevine that the AASCA Latte Art Championship competition is going to be rerun this Sunday. Apparently there was some problem with the rules so they have to hold the whole competition again.
So for anyone that missed it, get yourself down there and watch how the best of the best do it...
Dont know where, though. Might have to contact someone from AASCA to get more detail.

Moderator - should this get moved to "News" section?

I dont think it will be held at the AXA Cafenatics. I think it will be at Cafenatics 3, on Flinders La right near Market St.

Re: Australian Latte Art Championship 25th May

    Uhh ... no ...

    It was

    1st Con
    2nd Zoe
    3rd Habib

I think that the scores were 27, 25 and 24, from memory.

This is a relatively new format, so the competitors still seemed to be a little unfamiliar with the rules. The first time around, I think that Habib was the only one who got the time bonus. This time, everyone got it. That said, it was still evident that the competitors will need to familiarise themselves with the rules a bit more - I heard that one poured superb art, but had all of their visual scores for one drink reduced to zero because the cup that it was poured into didnt conform with the rules.

All in all, its a great fun format that requires nowhere near as much effort as the barista comp. I think that we will see a lot more people competing next year. $75 for AASCA members, with a chance to win a trip to the world championships and no real need to do any training beyond what you would do at work? Bargain! Plus its short and sweet, theres plenty for the crowd to see and theres immediate feedback.

Cafenatics 3 was a great venue; I think that it added something special to actually have the barista behind a bar, serving the drinks as they would in a Roman espresso bar. It was fairly laid back, so there was even a bit of time to get the competitors to make a bunch of shots for the crowd after each set. Id love to see the barista comp adopt a similar setup, but it might not be practical.

    Cheers,

    Luca

I think Con did a great job yesterday. His patterns were simple but he did them well. Most of the competitors opted for simple but simmetrical unlike the 1st time around where I think we saw higher difficulty patterns but not as well done.

Really feel for Erin cos she didnt win even though she should have the last time, and I thought that Con should have scored better the last time and deservedly wins it this time.

What about Habib? Having the title and chance to compete at the WLC stripped

Yep, its a real downer for Habib.....

I know the rules have to be followed.... but this is nothing short of a debacle......

The rest of the world who are looking in on this must think we cant manage a championship - and they would be right!!!! :-[ :-[ :-[

On the other hand, if the correct rules had been followed, Habib probably wouldnt have won anyway. But, then again, whos to know, given that the score sheets were slightly different? Thats the whole point of running it.

Habib was very gracious about the whole thing at drinks afterwards and seemed to have genuinely had a good time.

The final rankings were pretty different from the last event, which is a testament to the skill of all of the competitors.

The rest of the world probably didnt have the mother of the person who was organising the thing die on the morning of the competition, prompting everyone to scramble to get it organised, resulting in the oversight in printing out the wrong scoresheet.

    Luca
