I want a chance to redeem myself after losing to Ben last year.
Shoot-out @ the DiBartoli Stand.
So far, Dan (Yeeza), Ben (benandfaith), Renzo and myself will be participating.
We have space for two more competitors - Thundergods already expressed interest, so hes got first dibs if he wants in. Anyone else up for it?
Our little shoot-out will be judged by the lovely Hazel de los Reyes, and the winner takes home an Espro Tamper.
Were aiming for an 11am start, and hopefully the whole shebang will be done within the hour.
I want a chance to redeem myself after losing to Ben last year.
No problem. Look out Ben! ;)
1 spot left ... any takers?
If theres still a spot, Ill have a go!
Ive never used any commercial type equipment before (eg HX E-61s, dosers, etc :-/), but what the heck...dive in at the deep end!! ;D ;D
BTW What are the rules?
PS. Is it OK if I bring my cold with me? sniff, snort.. :P
No problem Greg. All spots are accounted for then.
You serve Hazel one espresso and one latte (beans are provided), she gives you a score for each. Person with the highest score wins :)
I thought you said earlier a piccolo latte.
Please confirm the size of the latte because Im used to full sized.
I did - then it got changed to a full sized one. Sorry.
Ok, I just got back from up the coast (sorry I couldnt drop in Michelle), and read this thread. Im freakin out!!! It should be great fun though! Looking forward to meeting some of the other CSers in person.... Ive never done any sort of comp regarding my coffee, so it should be fun (said awkardly) And an Espro wouldnt go astray on my shelf ;) hahaha... as if. ::)
p.s. I think I had only 1 good coffee that whole time up the coast from Sydney, to Byron and back over the past 5 days. Ive just busted into the Malawi I roasted JUST before i left, mmm.
Well I just got an Espro. Bought one when I bought my Galatea but now Im thinking of a Pullman one that fits the basket perfectly. The Espro has a bit over 1mm clearance from the basket edge. I presume that one of the sponsors here will have some Pullman tampers and matching baskets maybe :-)
I can bring mine along if you wanna check it out for a play.Originally Posted by speleomike link=1214880720/0#8 date=1215002796
Its the ridgeless synesso double with the fitted Pullman.
Yes please Yeeza. I have never actually played with a fitted basket / tamper before. Ill be at the DiBartoli stand at 10.00 is to see the shooting and Ill wear the CS card, hopefully all CSers will wear theirs :-)
Look forward to meeting CSers.
Ive been in Mullaly for the week and had no internet connection! And I come back with barely enough time to practice! Haha!
Im sure TG will come out with all guns blazing and knock me off my perch, but with Renzo and Ofra, the consummate pros in the mix (alog with everyone else), its going to be a tough one to win!
Well, it should be fun - theres a fair bit of pressure with Ofra putting us up as the best home baristas in Sydney... hopefully well live up to the billing =P
Sounds like you guys are going to have a blast. I am going for Dan. Go champ!!!
;D :D Thanks Matt, yeah I think Ill need to have all the support I can muster against all these guns.Originally Posted by donnas650 link=1214880720/0#12 date=1215090826
Watch out for Ben.
Is there going to be a live stream? Haha. Just kidding. Good Luck and I cant wait to hear the results.
Actually thatís not a bad Idea especially for people that are not Sydneysiders and want to see how it all looksOriginally Posted by donnas650 link=1214880720/0#15 date=1215095203
Failing that a sponsor link to view some video clips covering the events of the day??
Im happy to host video - I run a few servers so its no problem.
Shame Ill miss this (I think) as I got volunteered into helping out on the Barazi stand with their Domus. Come visit me, Ill be lonely!
Youre just across the hall mate, Im sure you wont miss out on too much action! :DOriginally Posted by Identity link=1214880720/0#17 date=1215153558

Yeah, watch out for me to go down in smoke! I say Renzo will be the favourite to take this one out!Originally Posted by Thundergod link=1214880720/0#14 date=1215093366

Only if its yours or from someone upstairs ;DOriginally Posted by Dennis link=1214880720/0#19 date=1215160410
Happy Birthday Dennis! :) :) :)
Thanks for the well wishes folks - was great to catch up with so many CSers today!
Anyone got the results from the shoot out?
Dan won it.
And the winner is...
Trinity and I had front row for round 2 and were watching dan - he was a little nervous at never having seen the grinder let alone used it before!! Sinked a couple of espressos before being happy. He finished both drinks with about 1.5 seconda before time - pretty cool.
Im all walked out and heading for bed as Allison has just informed me that we have to make it and the new sheets are in the 8 week olds room who is sleeping...... wish me luck with this one ;)
I will give a bit more of my thoughts tomorrow, but basically it was a good day.
Awww shucks.... lets just say Im glad Hazel was a sensory judge only and not watching my pours ;)
We were assigned random machines for the shoot out. So I ended up on the Galatea and Macap M4D that Id never touched before (and was dreading to use), an Espro tamper that Ive never used properly, and Renzos "modified" jug (that he will claim thats why I won). I think Michelle ended up on the machine she didnt want too. It was very nerve racking with 100s of eyes on you (spilling my latte everywhere and my pours gushing). I dont know how I won, I think there must have been some money passed under the table... or someone felt really sorry for me ;)
Great fun though. And I now have an Espro tamper in my quiver woohoo!!!
(Its scary having my photo up there, now everyone knows what I look like)
Twas a great day. Good to catch up with lots of CSers! (Just hope none of them saw my incredibly embarrassing shoot-out latte - or should I say FLAT white!)
Seriously, congrats Dan (and sorry I forgot the cups - I realised at Town Hall!!!).
Hope everyonell be able to sleep tonight!
Ben will probably claim he lost because he forgot to take his jug with him when they allocated his machine.
Dont worry Ben it didnt help me.
I was a bit wary of the grinder I got as well but the VBM wasnt as much a problem this year as it was the first time I saw it last year.
I know I didnt place as well as last year (2nd in 2007) because Ben and I compared scores from Hazel and he beat me again (1 point).
Next year Ben...........
Awesome work Dan. Sounds like it was a cool comp. I wonder how the espro matches up against the pullman.
What were the final places for all competitors?
Congrats to Dan! I saw those latte pours - 80% milk in the cup, 20% left for the cleaners! But hey, they must have been well textured and taste good! In any case, with Hazel as judge, the best tasting drinks definitely won the day!
I was happy with my espresso, but my latte milk really killed me - should have stuck with my lumpy spud first up effort with better texture. With seconds to go, I completely fluffed my second effort!
As for scoring, we were given back our marking sheets my Hazel, but only TG was willing to discuss it. Renzo played it coy and refused to divulge his score! So no one can really know what the final standings are...
Looking forward to another shoot out (hopefully!) next year!
I was robbed! My jug was -so- the difference between winning and losing! :POriginally Posted by Thundergod link=1214880720/20#33 date=1215346661
There is always next year... lets see how long we can keep this duel up for - perhaps it will go on for decades!
Hey, you guys were amazing!
Such willingness to be thrown in the deep end with:
1) a grinder you havent worked with much (you dont know the speed, the throw, how the bloody thing works, how much impact an adjustment has, this is a biggie)
2) an espresso machine you havent worked with much (how low the showerscreen hangs, how much to flush, steam pressure, etc)
3) beans you havent worked with much
4) be totally exposed to the public who can see the minutiae of your routine (and many of them "know" what youre up to)
5) a very short time not only to familiarise yourself with the machinery but to dial-in the grinder while youre at it
6) a very short time to produce an espresso and a latte,
and yet Ive tasted some really yummy espressos: one was distinctly almondy, one was full-bodied and complex with a really interesting finish, one with a crema that seemed to extend beyond the bottom of the cup, and I got all of this within the few seconds I had to judge these drinks. Contrast this to my experience a couple of years ago when I judged a pro-barista comp - I came home green at the gills and threw up. No such misfortune this time.
I know I roasted the stuff, but you guys did delicious justice to it. Thank you so much.
Keep em shootin
^^^^^^^^there is probably the highest praise your gonna get. ^^^^^^^^^^
Again well done to the competitors
Sounds like you guys did an awesome job. Wish I could have made it to Sydney. Who knows. Maybe next year. :-)
:D :D Youve got no idea how much this means to me Hazel! :-* :-* :-*Originally Posted by HD link=1214880720/20#37 date=1215416990

Assuming I was part of the some, I too am very pleased by your comments! Its great to know we home hacks (well, some of us anyway) are doing ok!Originally Posted by HD link=1214880720/20#37 date=1215416990
Thanks for taking the time out to come and judge the shootout!
In my mind this is how the pro-barista comps should be run. Or at the very least there should be a seperate category for it. Judging purely based on the talent of the barista, not based on the roaster & support crew they work with. Give everyone a common bean & some setup time & see who can produce the best cup from the coffee theyre given to work with.
Congrats to all who participated. Wish I wasnt south of the border when events like this come up. Of course, its ONLY events like this that make me wish I wasnt south of the border ;)
;D I spent half of my life trying to get out of Sydney and once achieved have never looked back. Great place to visit - occasionally. ;) We went up for the Food and Wine show a couple of weeks ago which sort of ruled out a repeat visit so soon. THAT visit made us realise how "ruralised" weve become. Crowds of people, the jostle, and the concrete started to overwhelm us in a very short time.Originally Posted by dsgfh link=1214880720/40#43 date=1215474417
Thanks HD.Originally Posted by HD link=1214880720/20#37 date=1215416990
Thanks also for taking time to do the judging.
bout time I made coffee for you for a change. ;)
Agreed. Its a great place to visit - occasionally. We love our "rural" lifestyle, whilst still being close enough to drive up for a special occasion (like Aroma Festival!) The crowds in the streets would have been unbearable (even though The Rocks/Circular Quay is a magical setting) if it wasnt for the great stuff happening in the Overseas Terminal. (I almost felt sorry for the masses queuing up for bad $1 coffee when we could just go back upstairs and ask Scottie Callaghan or Jack Hanna to pull us another shot - worlds best kept secret!)Originally Posted by Wrecker link=1214880720/40#44 date=1215475764
And thanks, Hazel, but I feel a bit sheepish and apologise for making you taste my efforts and waste your beautiful beans. Particularly my latte - BLAH! Just couldnt get it together. Its probably the worst cup Ive ever made! ;D ;D
Thats some beautiful equipment, but in my hands it felt so foreign. It was kind of nice to get up next morning and make a couple of nice lattes on my little Lelit machine (just to show myself I could still do it) - without all the bling of the Giotto blinding me, the Mazzer doser throwing left, the tamper having too much play, the shower screen being too low for my accustomed up-dosing technique, the wands and knobs being everywhere (they seemed to get more and more in the way as it went on!), everyone looking on and the clock ticking down (I didnt know 5 mins could go so fast!). I wont go on, but it felt like being asked to play something on the piano for everyone - and I cant play piano (unless chopsticks was considered acceptable :P).
Well done to all the other guys to match it with Renzo, who had earlier made Julie and I the best coffee we had all day - 2 beautiful doppio ristretto piccolo lattes. And thanks for your patience and assistance, Ofra. I hope you had a successful day - you deserve it with all the work youd put into it.
My wife and I also partook of a similar offering from Renzo. This was the one coffee we remembered with fondness after the Expo. What was that secret blend Renzo?Well done to all the other guys to match it with Renzo, who had earlier made Julie and I the best coffee we had all day - 2 beautiful doppio ristretto piccolo lattes.
I have only been to Di Bartolis about 4-5 times a couple of months back but both Renzo and Ofra welcomed my wife and I as if we were regular customers and by name as well. By far the friendliest stand we visited all day!
;D I was just knocking the top froth off my texturing haha. And cos the drip tray on those Galateas are so small I only had one place to pour it - that was the ground ::) :-[Originally Posted by benandfaith link=1214880720/20#35 date=1215401601
That was so embarrassing. :-[
Thank You! :)
Michelle, Ben, Dan, Theodore, Marc, Ana, Peter, Nathan, Adrian & John, thank you for your contribution to the Aroma Festival!
Youve done a wonderful job, each person in your roll, with passion, dedication and professionalism many baristas and retailers should aspire for. We would never have been able to put up such a dynamic, eye catching and a professional presentation of our stand without you. Ive posted few pics on flickr, please feel free to add tags or comments for any of them, would upload more in the coming few days:
Please do make your way to the store and collect your appreciation token, if havent done so already!
Hope you had a blast! unfortunately, Dan, the intensity does come with a price of some publicity by its side.... ;)
