Spammers - becoming members and contacting via PM.

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight

    >:( >:( >:(

We have had a couple of members receive direct contact from a supplier in China who is asking for MSN or Skype contact details so they can "talk about coffee". They just want to sell you stuff that may or may not exist (who knows!).

Donít give your details to anyone that asks in a PM unless you "know" they are a real CS member that had been around for a while.

The latest one was from the member coffeemaker we have changed his password so he cannot contact you anymore.

    SPAMMERS GO AWAY.

Russia and China are the two worst offenders at the moment. We might have to think about blocking their whole countries from CS in the future (which is sad for real CoffeeSnobs in those countries).

If you get a message from a filty rotten scumbag time-wasting spammer send me an email (andy@....) and Ill remove their account.

OK so there are not many positives from this frustrating SPAMing......BUT...... it shows that this little community is not so little anymore. If you are attracting SPAMmers then you are on the radar.

Not much of a positive, but hey gotta clutch at straws in this situation ::) ::)

I may have been the first member to get spammed
and sent details to the Mods for quick action

I donít like spam at all

It starts as a trickle and becomes a never ending flood
Itís best to stop it early

Andy give them the Dirty Harry option (no option at all) [smiley=evil.gif]

There was an incident a little while back which was a local so they got a report or two to Fair Trading.

Unfortunately Russia and China is a whole different kettle of fish.

I have a few attempts at spam on a forum of mine.
    Mostly Russian.
Not many these days as they have to manually set up an account.
I usually manage to block them before they come back to try their new account.

I had one today who wanted to make me a contact on msn, I quickly deleted and blocked them.

Andy, I sent you an email about it.

My reply was NO and I passed it on to Andy... However got a response before their account may have been managed.

More personable than many others... but just teh same... All the info is in the posts and forum... So with 1 posts and the direct approach.. smacks of SPAM.

NOTE: I do not have MSN or Skype any way :-)

    Dear Anger,

Thanks so much for your kind reply.

I am working for a hardware manufacturer, and we mainly produce coffee tampers for cafes all over the world. Because of our food habit is different, I just know a little bit about coffee and coffee culture. In order to expand our coffee tamper market, let the cafe get competitive price and good quality from us, I think, know more about coffee culture would be useful for our tamper marketing, am I right? You should know that, In China, most of chinese like to drink tea, but not coffee.

Thank you very much for your kind attention. To this point, I hope that you could help me and give me so suggestions, your kind reply will be high appreciated.

    Have a nice weekend!
    Best regard,

...and the one that Linda and Thomas got today was from another China tamper spammer whos account was removed a week ago (and they made another called chuan6893 ).

I guess we could start telling them that everyone on CoffeeSnobs has a tamp but they should try over on coffee geek where the rest of the spammers hang-out!

Just use the words "free" and "Tibet" and the Chinese government filters will block their access for you.

Great suggestion Andy but it may generate a turf war ;D

I got one the other day and canned it.

Spam is a real pain, according to Message Labs global statistics, of the total volume of email they scanned for the last 12 months 54% of it was spam. Fortunately our own domain at work only attracts about 20% of our overall email volume as spam but i guess it will increase as its only a matter of time.

Count yourself lucky with 20%. Just looked at the weekly stats on the Ironport spam filter at work and 93.9% - or 810k messages were spam. And none in my mailbox!

No probs N2E - send us your email address and well sign you up for a few websites and forums. In no time at all you will be receiving lots of invitations to improve your physical dimensions, your..err..prowess ,and there are plenty of Russian girls eager to ensure you will never feel lonely or left out again. If for some reason that doesnt work, Ill share mine with you *:P

    Yeah, that could work.

I used to have a private game I christened:

    Recycle Junk Mail Bingo.

This was when you got more than one bit of junk mail with a reply paid envelope supplied.
You took the junk mail from company A and put it in the reply paid envelope for company B and vice-versa. (Ensuring that you removed anything with your name or address on it).
Extra points could be earned for adding random recycling to the envelope. I once got an entire Corn Flakes package in a Citibank envelope!

Thus, you recycled, cost them money and had a bit of fun.

Surely we could embark on the electronic version if only we knew their REAL e-mail addresses!

I have in the past used a bounce junk mail program
But that just went back to an unsuspecting but innocent person

Most if not all spammers steal real emails addresses and use them as a sender carrier
(I know this as I often get spam email from myself?)

I know speleomike has a program available on his site but I donít know how to use it
Or if it will work in this situation

Some PCs are zombied ie infected by some trojan and then controlled remotely http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zombie_computer

Some trojans have a built in SMTP mailer. It will compile names and email addresses from anywhere on the infected PC and use these to spoof sender addresse,s which is the more likely reason why you would be receiving email from yourself KK

I have several email addresses: a couple of gmail ones - one I used to sign up for stuff online as a one-off. I dont care who spams that. Another I use for more serious use (such as CS membership). MY ISP one I am very careful about who I give it to and get little spam sent to it.

I did this just the other day.
I didnt have a company B so just sent everything back to comany A including the original envelope.
Ive previously asked to be taken off their list but that only lasts until they generate a new one.

    Fun.

I like your idea though. More amusing.

    ------------------

Ive also got an online email address for when I dont want to give them a real one.
    Its jfor@........
    Thats "j" for junk.

I had a PM from this alleged spammer guy (coffee_maker) last Sunday night, and, purely out of curiosity I later contacted him on Skype to see what he was on about.

In spite of talking to him and questioning him closely for about 15 mins, ( I used to be in a senior capacity in Fair Trading ), I made very little sense of his intentions and motivation. He would not provide direct responses to my questions.

I waved my Pullman tamper close to my webcam lens, and he said "Ah...Pullman".

I then referred him to the CS moderators.

Multiple email addresses is the only way to go, unless you do what a mate of mine does, he sends the remove message to them, only once, if they ignore him he then makes contact and gets the real web and email addresss from them and unleashes the biggest nastiest cocktail of his pet viruses you could imagine upon them. cruel but very affective.
I make it a point not to upset him...... mwha ha ha ha ha ha ........ Ray.

Oh the joy of SPAM, I used to be the spam guy from my old workplace, what fun it was a never ending battle

Have you got a captch system in place on this forum at all? If not you might want to see if you can do it

Ive administered forums like this before and when an address starts sending junk I just start banning IP addressess, if I see more than 1 SPAM from an IP range I block the whole range

As a general rule you should find and block any IP that comes from russia and china, though with this forum becoming recognised outside of AUS thats probably not a feasible idea

how quickly do these spam accounts start sending PM messages after they sign up? Maybe you could set up something so that if an accoutn sends a PM within a certain amount of time after signing up, or puts posts with http or email links in them as the first posts they make, they are suspended? This has worked really well for me previously

    Gday phrosti

Im pretty sure that Andy is well aware of all these measures and employs those of them that have the best chance of working. As you say though, as CS becomes more international with its membership one has to consider very carefully how the tools available are used.....

    Cheers, :)

Re: Spammers - Ooops, I blocked IP and locked out

Over the last week we have been getting hit by a whole lot of SQL injection attacks (and others), most were from China and I started to block the IP ranges but it appears that at least one was from an Optusnet customer in Thomastown (infected PC I guess).

    C:/\/>tracert 211.28.216.152
    Tracing route to c211-28-216-152.thoms1.vic.optusnet.com.au [211.28.216.152]

The gotcha was that when I blocked the range we also blocked some CSrs who got a message that they were "Banned from the forum".

Sorry to any CSr who got that message, I have removed the blocks and "transmission should be back to normal"

Sheeze spammers are both a time sponge and a waste of space.
    **sigh**
