    Coffee Bean Candles Article

AUTHORITIES have seized more than 900 coffee-scented candles from a Melbourne importer after they were declared a serious fire risk.

Inspectors from Consumer Affairs Victoria recently seized 908 of the coffee-bean candles from an importer in Brooklyn, in Melbournes west, after a tip-off from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB).
Consumer Affairs Minister Marsha Thomson said the MFB had reported the coffee bean candles as the source of at least two fires.

In one instance, the carpet of a home was scorched after the coffee beans caught alight and popped off the candle, spreading around the room.

"The concept of these coffee-scented candles is quite alluring but the reality is the beans are a safety and fire hazard because they can easily pop and catch alight," Ms Thomson said today.

"These types of candles were banned by the State Government in 2002. Retailers who sell these candles are in direct contravention of the ban and risk hefty fines."

I didnt know the candles were banned!

I see them at craft market type places all the time and I know of a professional roaster that sells his "demo beans" to candle makers.

    Whoops.

    Andy:

You look a bit like Hannibal Lecter in that profile photo! Or have you been burnt by some flaming waxed out beans?
