#8: Profitable Iced Beverages and Menu Development with Aimen Krayem - Da Vinci Gourmet. 12:00pm
Specialty coffee rules the morning hours, but there’s something that’s driving customers to coffee houses in those lonely afternoons… the frappé-based blended drink. It’s an exploding category that’s hit a sweet spot with consumers, and even with some of the most skeptical retailers who are striving to seek that fine balance between a flexible menu and a profitable one.

I also just heard via a local CSr that the local rag (Focus) in Port Macquarie said:

"So for all you coffee enthusiasts that would like to learn a little bit more about your daily hit, or maybe try something different, the event is open to the public to view the judging process in the upstairs function rooms at The Westport Club on Saturday, 15th of November from 9am"

Im going, but my flight only gets in at 10am, so I think that Im going to miss some of Micks session :(

    Anyone else going?

It will be interesting, as always, to see which roasters do well in the golden bean.

Yeah Im heading-up, Port Macquarie is a very nice spot and the CafeBiz crew really bend over backwards to make sure its a great event.

Its a new venue this year too, I walked past it last year so I know where it is but not whats inside. Its close to the centre of town and walking distance from most accomodation.

If you roll-in on Saturday morning you are likely to be the only one without blood-shot eyes from the Thursday night social. Didnt you want to get messy with the rest of us?

Re: CafeBiz - Golden Bean 2008

....Andy got to bed some time after 3am..... but that is another story. (please type quietly).
    ;)

I dont have a lot of time as Im due to checkout of the hotel.

It was another great Golden Bean weekend. Lots of coffee, great people and a real buzz around the place. CoffeeSnob site sponsors ECA, Cafetto, Diamond C, Avacuppa, Coffeehit and Makin Espresso were all there to support the event too. Cafe Biz do put on a great show and it ran like clockwork from the fun social events to the day of judging and awards dinner everything worked well.

I scribbled notes during the awards but dont have all the information, what I do have is:

    CoffeeSnobs scored 4 medals:
    Silver: Filter
Bronze: Organic Espresso, Espresso, Australian Latte.

    Site sponsors did well too.

    Genovese scored two medals.
    Di Bartoli scored two medals.
The Coffee Barun : bronze filter
Pioneer - bronze: Australian, Filter and Espresso
Cuppacoffee - bronze filter, silver retail filter

    The Gold medals went to:
Espresso: Chosen Bean (nice one Steven!)
    Organic: Gigante Coffee
    Filter: Coffee Plus
    Australian: Jasper (well done Ross!)

The highest points score in Espresso and Latte gets the "Golden Bean" and this year it heads over to the west: Fiori Coffee

So while not a complete list of medals the above are the ones that I wrote down between going-up and collecting our own medals. If I get a complete list Ill post it up.

I have to say that the quality of coffee in judging this year was far better than last year, its a good sign that more and more places are putting time into cupping and trying to produce something special.

    Well done everyone!

    Woo Hoo!

Would just like to say thanks:

To Serge, for teaching me how to roast slower,
To Jason, for teaching me how to roast faster,
To Andy, for his ongoing encouragement,
To my family, friends and customers, who indulge me, and
To the critics, who challenged me to do better.

Congratulations to all the other Roasters out there who I know put their heart and soul into striving to create a great cuppa!

Congrats to all CSs who picked up medals.

Must say, I am very dissapointed in my coffee at the moment (some of my regular beans are becoming unavailable until next harvest) so its a nice lift in anticipation of the ABC ahead.

Many thanks to all my customers and supporters, we do this for you!!!

Im a bit confused tho - will your future roasts take more or less time or do you just break even? :)

    Hey All,

A quick blog post on the subject for your enjoyment. Add the l to "bogspot" as necessary to circumvent the automatic CS changeroo thingy.

Id like to send out a massive thank you to Sean and Justeen from CafeBiz for their hospitality.

    Cheers,

    Luca
