    What should I do?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi all,

I just received an EM6910 and an EMO450 for Christmas from the Boss (very happy).

However, I have a problem (maybe) with the grinder. - I am grinding on "1" - yes, the lowest setting and am just getting around 12 - 1:00 position on the gauge when extracting! Only on this setting am I getting a reasonable extraction. Should I order a spacer or two from sunbeam, or, return the grinder for a new one?

I have read a fair bit of the info on here regarding the EMO480/450 and understand there is variability in the grind settings between grinders, but to start on the lowest setting possible, bearing in mind it is a brand new grinder (24 hours out of box), seems a bit off. By the way, I am grinding, light tamp, grinding more, leveling, tamping hard so I dont think under tamping or channeling is causing the issue.

At the moment am using supermarket beans as my order of fresh is on its way. (Nevertheless, bean freshness shouldnt have any bearing on the gauge pressure, should it?)

    Hi Asahi,

Bean freshness will have a bearing on the pressure. Until you receive your fresh beans, use the pressurised filter basket.

If, after receiving the fresh beans you still find you cant grind in the 10-15 range or thereabouts and get a good result, then I would start to wonder.

Your dosing and tamping routine sounds good. You should see about half of the silver part of the tamper when pressing down.

    Best of luck.

Check that the top burrs are properly fitted. Take them out and then refit according to the instructions. If they have not been properly inserted this will affect your grind. :)

Thanks, Stan. I did pull apart and re-seat everything. All looked fine.

Since its covered by a replacement warranty and its a known fault, you could just take it back to the store for a replacement. I went through that twice - the first one couldnt grind fine enough, the second was way too fine (or vice versa). The spacers did the trick for me - in my case I had to take one out - when I figured it was easy enough to change them (and Id probably end up doing that anyway since the replacement might not be any better!).

As it is new and under warranty I would take it back. ;)
