Compak K3 or Bezzera BB004 (or Mazzer or Macap)

    :-/ :-/ :-/

OK, Ive got a Silvia and an EM0480 and I want to move to a dosered grinder as the grinds getting stuck up the chute is annoying me and I dont want to have to keep knocking the grinder around everytime I grind. Now, I pretty much only make lattes and I dont need a grinder that will do anything other than grind for the Silvia. I was toying with getting a Rocky, but I figure if I can skip that step its probably a good idea in the long run. The Mazzer Mini seems to be one of those grinders that everyone recommends, so I get that its a good grinder, as are the Macaps. But what I wanted to know was if the Compak K3 or the Bezzera BB004 were worth considering? From what I can read, the Compak seems to hold up well in this category, but it seems a fair bit cheaper and so I am a bit dubious. I saw the Bezzera and mainly love the look of it, but cant find all that much about it, although it looks a lot like the LaSpaziale Junior in the grinder reviews, in which case Im thinking it would be good. If anyone has bought a Bezzera (or whatever brand theirs is called) I would love to know if its any good for the Silvia. Cheers ;D

    Hi Doug81,
I havent seen much info on the Bezzera, but have you seen this review on the Compak K3 Elite?

    http://www.coffeetamper.com.au/kb/reviews/mini-k3/.

Not that I have a Compak K3 yet, trying to get to Chris from CoffeeTalk this week. But from lots of discussion it seems it will be well worth to skip the Rocky and go for the Compak/Mazzer if you can stetch your budget. As stated numerous times on this forum, buy the best grinder you can afford!

    Hi Doug,

My advice would be to set your sights on the Compak or better- for this is where the serious grinders start...

The Compak represents great value for money (note that prices have increased- as with all other brands) but like all grinders, has idiosyncrasies. I find the timed function irritating and difficult to accurately adjust and I have no time for LHS power switches. The Macap M4D is the category killer here but is 2 x K3T price.

In doser grinders, the Macap M4 and Mazzer mini manual are terrific if youre willing to learn how to use a doser grinder well.

    Hope that helps....

    Hi Doug,

I have no time for LHS power switches.

    Chris
My Mazzer has the switch on the right and its a pain because the grinder sits to the left of the espresso machine - so switch is sort of hidden between the two (and you need to get to it when you accidently hit the timer button a second time ...), and power cable shoots out the left hand side of the grinder and gets in the way. My Brassilia had them the other way around so never thought of it ...

Re: Compak K3E or **** (or Mazzer or ****)

OK, Ive ditched the idea of the blue Bezzera as I tried out the rocky and the doser seemed very flimsy and I suspect the Bezzera to be better, but still similar. Also figuring that Ill need to go stepless, so its Compak K3 Elite or Mazzer Mini Manual so I dont need to upgrade ever again. Have read the review by Greg a couple of times, but decision is still up in the air. i think it will come down to price, which is changing a lot at the moment. Leaning towards the Compak for the looks and more vertical throw, but would be very happy with a Mazzer methinks. Second hand is also an option if anyone knows anyone wanting to sell *wink wink*

On the plus side, Ive finally figured out how to get a good shot from my Silvia using a preinfusion technique. Setting 9 is OK on the sunbeam, 8 is choking it and 10 gives a weak shot, but needs finer adjustment. Also requires stirring the grinds in the portafilter for distribution and a bit of temperature surfing. Will post up some pics or a video of the shot through the naked p/f when i get a chance.

    Doug,

I would go for the K3 purely for the price vs product point of view. Personally I think the touch is great and a bit cheaper than the elite, Im not sure why you want a doser if you are grinding on demand at home asssuming that time is not an issue. There is a little issue I have found recently with fracturing on the hopper of the Compaks, even my new K10 has developed a couple without any serious use. But having said that I believe Compak are trying new things all the time so will probably deal with that soon.

    Should have updated...

I ended up getting a Mazzer Mini over the Compak as the prices had gone up, but I was still able to get a Mazzer for $714 shipped to adelaide. Nice grinder, now just figuring out how to use it! I have gotten some good results from a med roast brasil, but need to tweak for darker roasts etc. Have also done the sweeper mod and plastic cup mod, and will do the dosing left mod shortly. This thing is built so solidly, and after Id ordered it I started seeing them everywhere. A lot of cafes have them as their decaf grinder, and a friend of mine who runs a cafe does also and confirmed it hasnt skipped a beat iover the 4 years its been there. Wont need another grinder ever, but I know I will end up getting one ;) But it can wait until Ive got more money than sense and I get that plumbed-in machine...
