Who here manually grinds their beans?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
How many hand grinders are there here?

Im looking for info on how long it takes to grind beans manually?
How long does it take to grind a single shot / double shot?
Does grinding finer for Espresso take much longer?

Please indicate what hand grinder you have and how often you use it? as well as how old it is?

    Many thanks
    Mark

I grind for Syphon Brews most mornings with a 43 year old Zass. Dose is around 20g and it takes a bit less to grind than the kettle takes to boil (2-3 minutes?).

As to finer yes it does take longer and I have my doubts as to most hand grinders being up to doing consistant espresso quality grinds.

For Espresso at home I use an electric and at the shop during the day I have a small electric for Syphon brews. Main reason I use the Zass is it saves having to redial the electric back in again.

Yep thats about it, as Beanflying said.
I grind for Aeropress about 2/3 of a double shot on a Z and it takes 70 turns of the handle about 30-40secs. I have several other hand grinders but the Z takes the least time. Never tried it in the espresso machine though as BF said this may not be quite fine enough or consitant enough.
The finest grind I can manage takes about 50% longer than the Aeropress grind.

    Hope this helps, Enjoy !

I only use my old Zassenhaus when grinding for the plunger. It definitely cant grind fine enough for espresso, but then I dont know how old it is or how much use its seen. Ive used it for a long time and my wife bought it in an op shop many, many moons ago. I dont use it for the Aeropress either as I like to use a grind almost as fine as espresso in it.
As for time, it would take me a bit under 1 minute to grind 14 grams for 1 cup.

    Cheers,
    Alan
