    La Cimbali grinder problem

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi guys
Does anybody have a diagram of how a La Cimbali doser works? The ratchet seems to have given up the ghost on mine, which is a bit poor since Ive had for only a couple of years and I only make on average half a dozen cups a day. Of course I have been using the technique of grinding through the doser which means it does a lot more work.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers

    Les

    Do you have the Junior?

What way has it given up the ghost?

I pick one up on the cheap but it took half a Sunday to clean and repair. One of the repair was doser. It was very stiff and sometimes wouldnt return. While the bottom plate of the doser was off I put a bit Inox (WD40) on it and it was good as new!

If you can give a bit more info I and others might be able to help ;D

    Re: La Cimbali grinder problem

    Hi Bassway

Thanks for the reply. The grinder is a 6SA but I would imagine all the Cimbali dosers work the same way. With mine it doesnt return ever now, since I ground some Coles (errgh!) beans very finely out of desperation because I hadnt had time to roast any. I can put my fingers in and hold the bottom spider which makes it work but as you can imagine this is a tad inconvenient. There is a knurled nut on the bottom which I have removed but that seems to be as far as I can go. Nothing else seems to come apart and I am hesitant to apply brute force without knowing what I am doing. Any ideas as to how it comes apart?

    Sorry I cant really help.

    From the La Cimbali site it seems that your motor and grinder are similar but the doser isnt;

The Junior has two philips head screw that hold the bottom plate. When these undo the plate falls away exposing the dosing mech.

I think that the knurled nut is the dosing adjustment?

    Re: La Cimbali grinder problem

Thanks Bassway four your help. I have now solved the problem. There were four screws with Allen key heads holding a plastic plate in place on the bottom of the doser. On removing those I found a plastic cover on one paul which consists of a steel tube with a spring and a steel rod inside. I eventually removed the Philips head screws by means of and angle drive attachment for my drill after a lot of swearing. I found that the steel rod was jammed in the tube and I freed it up. While I had it in bits I attacked another paul in the bronze handle. The handle was tricky to take off because it was attached with a nut with a left handed thread. Being a bit dumb it took me a while to realise this. I reversed both the steel rods used as the pauls to provide a nice new surface.

I eventually assembled it all and voila it all works again. I dont know why the original one jammed. Maybe there was some rust in the tube. Anyway all is well again. I took some pictures for future reference

    Gday Les,

Do you mean this kind of "pawl" mate... http://www.answers.com/topic/pawl or are you referring to something completely different? Getting confused :-?

You are absolutely correct Mal. Pardon my spelling. It is many years since I had anything to do with pawls,
