    Macap M5 to a Rocky - will I notice?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
After struggling with my 16 year old, incredibly noisy, Saeco grinder (bought new from Cosmorex in 1993) a friend took pity on me and has lent me his spare Macap M5 grinder for the last month or three.

He hasnt actually mentioned it, but I kinda suspect he might want it back sometime in this lifetime, so Im thinking about getting a Rocky, mainly cause Ive got a Silvia it could be friends with.

Now, the M5 seems like quite a nice machine, and certainly does the business in the grinding department, and is *much* quieter than my Saeco (which makes a router with failing bearings seem whisper-quiet by comparison) but Im wondering whether a Rocky is going to be a bit of a let-down?

I know Ive gone on about noise, but is a Rocky as quiet as the Macap? Does it convert beans into dust as effectively?

I dont know the M5, but I suspect that you might need to do a very simple, easy, and undoable mod of the piece of black pvc pipe around the rim of the Rocky and perhaps the thread tape mod...plenty of info on this site if you search for those mods. The Rocky then becomes stepless and very adjustable and tight.

    Cheers

I havent used a Rocky but have the Macap and I have at times almost forgotten it is still on once it goes quiet after grinding all the beans.

If you were going up to to the Rocky Id say congratulations.

But Im going to be snobby now and suggest that it will be a backwards step to replace the Macap with a Rocky.

Not that a Rocky is not a good grinder, but you are now used to something better.

I went from a Rocky to a Macap M5 and noticed the difference. Certainly in favour of the Macap.

Rocky is louder and not quite in the same category.

The Rocky is a good grinder, but the Macap is better. And they are priced as such.

Just make your friend an offer to take the Macap M5 off his hands & be done with it
Its the least you can do

    P.S. I agree with this quote [smiley=smiley_down.gif]

Rocky is a good grinder and the mods make it even better, but one always strives for the best we can afford. Perhaps your friend would be willing to sell it to you at a special price? Its worth the question. Im happy with my Rocky but if Kevin 07s rescue package is approved I will be investing my $950 in a Mazzer Super Jolly!!!

Hmm, not quite sure if I want to invest the Stimulus Package in coffee grinding equipment :)

Thanks for the comments - the unit seemed to be brand new when he lent it to me, and I think he had plans for it, so I doubt hes going to want to sell it.

I cant quite come at the cost of the M5, so maybe Ill try a Rocky and do some of the recommended modz on it - I guess I can always sell it and upgrade if I miss the M5 too much...

I went from a Rocky to an M4D and can readily notice a difference with or without milk.
At the same time it is not an incredible difference, and if the money was an issue I would have been happy to stay with Rocky.
If you get the Rocky, the modifications are well worth the time and trouble (not much). The cost is less than $5 even if you have to buy all the fixins.
