    Compak K3 Geek- WBC style

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi all,

I received interesting news today on a new grinder.

I have always suggested that a Compak K3 geek would do well: take a Compak K3 Elite and remove the tamper from the dosing chamber and get rid of the auto stop mechanism as well. Add a metal rather than plakky fork to aid collapsing of the dose. In effect, it would be a K3 with WBC specs. You then turn a cafe style decaf grinder into a perfect CS doser grinder.

Inherent in the Compak design, youd get a perfect dosing chamber sweep and much less left throw than the Mazzer.

Diamond Services has informed that the have landed a grinder in this exact spec. It will be called the Compak K3 Professional Barista and Ill get a better look and update info (hopefully with some pix) tomorrow.

Pricing looks like a direct competitor with the Mazzer mini-manual.

    Hi Buschy,

I hope to get an evaluation model next week. There are only a few in Australia at this stage.

Its platinum (silver) and looks like a little K10 diamond- with the shroud type doser cover.

The dosing chamber is really clean and it has the K10 style metal fork.

Left throw will be minimised as the fork is closer to the dosing chamber.

Pix as soon as it arrives....

    Hi all,

Apols for the delay in getting (a very poor) pic of the K3PB up...

As already mentioned, it looks like the K10 diamond, but no tamper and no auto stop. The *fork is great and the doser sweeps cleaner than the mazzer mini...

Availability VERY limited at present and price is $790

where is the power switch located? on the left of the unit (looking at it)? Is it timed or on/off?

Ill let you know once the unit arrives *;D. I had assumed on the left like my K3T and the Elite, but photos of the K6 Pro and K10 on Compak web site show a "high resistance" on/off on the right. It is my understanding that just the doserless K3T features timed or on/off.

    Yes- all correct...

It is a K3 Elite with no tamper and no auto stop- so power switch on the left as it is on all other K3 models.

The grinder is not a timed grinder

Can you give us a height on these? Any chance of a shorter hopper for this model? I am a big fan of the compak, but they are big. I am confined in the height stakes! Thanks, C.

Approx. 420mm with the short hopper. Mine arrived today. *:) Ive already packed the taller hopper to ship to someone else so unfortunately I cant tell you the difference in height. Info. might be on the Compak web site. Heres a couple of photos. I have used it once and found it to sweep very clean (one of the reasons I bought it). There is almost nothing left in the doser. Seems very solid.

mod edit- 470mm with standard hopper

    Thanks Buschy,

where did you get the machine from? And the short hopper? PM me if it is a non-site sponsor. I am happy to get the machine through a sponsor, but it would only work for me if I can get a short hopper. It does look great though! Do you have any experience against a Mazzer mini or Macap M4? These are the three I am looking at. Any guidance would help.

    Cheers and good grinding.

    Hi Nelo,

We supplied Bushys grinder. There are a few left ;)

As for a short hopper, you will have to source one from o/s. I am sure that Bushy will be able to put you onto the right mob...

    Thanks Chris,

any thoughts on the Compak versus the Mazzer Mini and Macap M4? You have a lot of experience with all 3 so any insights would be appreciated.

    Cheers.

    Hi Nelo,

If you search the site for the Compak K3E (Elite), the PB is the exact same grinder minus the tamper and auto stop.

Havppy to chat on this one if you like but Id need to write a mini thesis on the compare and contrast ;)

nelo, if you google Compak K3 review, Greg Pullman does a direct comparison between the K3 elite and the Mini-Mazzer manual, its pretty comprehensive.

we dont seem to get the option of the elite model in NZ, only the touch, but this one sure looks the goods

PM me if you need info on sourcing a mini hopper. No, Ive never owned a doser grinder, just the K3T doserless so I do not have anything to compare it to. Loved the K3T, just thought it would be fun to try my luck with a doser model for a while. This one looked good, and I liked the fact that it didnt need any "mods" done to it, however small... (considering cost).

One thing I have noticed is that the double portafilter that came with my new Giotto doesnt fit that well in the fork. The double spouts are slightly too long and end up dragging along the black plastic base below. Not really an issue for me as I enjoy using my naked portafilter. However...something to consider. I guess you could always pick up a slightly shorter double spout but I find it strange that it does this. I assume portafilter spouts only come in a few standard sizes (perhaps Im wrong) and that Compak would have checked clearances before releasing this grinder?

Definitely looks a great grinder, and would have been great to test that against the Mini. Nelo, http://www.coffeetamper.com.au/kb/reviews/mini-k3/ is the review Senator referred to.
