    Sunbeam EM0480 stepless mod?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I have read a number of posts that suggest it is possible to mod the EM0480 to make it (sort of) stepless but cant find anything on how to actually do it.

    Can anyone help?

Havent tried the stepless mod myself, but found it after i bought an EM0450 the other day.

my modd stepless em0480 is still going strong, I enjoyed doing the mod to it and am still very happy with it, although I tend to use my gino rossi a lot more these days only because of volume purposes. The stepless mod is as simple as removing the indents from the inside edge of the top housing with a dremel or similar tool. The masking tape mod adds enough resistance to keep the setting stable. I still have 1 or 2 of the timber bushs kickin about somewhere if you want one, just say the word and ill post it to you...... As for the quality of the grind, I would put it up against my gino rossi any day of the week, mind you I really love my commercial equipment though. Ray 8-)

Cant really see the point to this mod to be honest. The steps are in the upper wider section of the collar, while the top burr engages in the narrower base of the collar via a thread.

Even if you turn the collar 1/2 a notch, therefore not hearing a click, your top burr is still travelling due to being engaged in a separate screw thread.

...or am I missing something? :-?

The issue is that the click is a sound caused from the method of locking the movement along the thread...

Thus you have a step, as defined by the manufacturer...

If you remove the steps but can retain a method to keep the grinder adjustment in the same position... Then it is much more definable..

What you have no control over is the thread pitch...

Thus if it is course (steep), then a slight movement can change the grind size by some significant about... Where if it is super fine then you have more control. However fine is more expensive and thus manufacturers of cheep grinders go course.

Some might say but I an only moving it a few mm... A few thou more of less can make a big difference for some beans and users etc...

    Hey AM

    Agree with that entirely.

What I was trying to say is that I can move mine that couple of mm as you suggest, so for the sake of numbers I can go 10, 10.25, 10.5 etc rather than needing to move all the way to 11. The burr is still moving even though the adjuster doesnt click.

Indeed, I can rest it on the click point and it will stay there.

It may have a better feel if modded to stepless but...

And as you say, a mm or two is a big movement in grind in most cases.

Thanks for all the advice on this thread. I have found that holding in the button in on the back and moving the collar by half measurements is allowing me enough control. Changing between 8 - 8.5 - 9 on my sunbeam (which of course means nothing on other machines) is giving me enough *control to consistently pull 25 second shots on the Silvia.

Thats a neat trick....never thought of holding the button in.

    Good one MacMaddog

Does the setting stay stable, without any masking tape or similar?

I would think not, there is more gaps in there than I have in my teeth, the masking tape mod is what holds mine steady, my 0480 that is, not my teeth.... Ray. 8-)

I was wondering about that, too. However, it seems to be working for MacMaddog.

It stays steady enough for a few doses. Not too hard to reset back to the halfway point if it moves. I find more often than not that I move it up or down half a click to a whole number to compensate for bean age, amount in hopper, humitidty etc before it moves out of place.
