    Rockys cracked nose

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi Gang,
this is my first post after a few months lurking and grabbing valuable info *;)
i gathered this is the best place to submit my first post.

Like so many others i recently received my Silvia/Rocky combo
and it seems i have a few problems (like others)
first of all the chrome has started to flake from the PF tabs... which i can deal with as its not a huge concern.
the other thing is that the clear green plastic chute on Rocky was cracked (stress crack) when i pulled him out of the box!
Mocapan (sydney) were more than happy to replace my grinder, But on receival of the second grinder there seems to be 2 smaller cracks on this one aswell..!
is this normal and being superficial does everyone let it slide..?
@ $400 a grinder.. you dont expect cracks.

    thats it........
besides that.. im in the midst of refurbing my tiffany popper with a chute and grabbing a starter pack.. and i just received my Pullman Tamper yesterday... and of course this morning was my best shots yet.. *8-)
still far from having tamed silvia as yet though... my beans are the only thing left i have to blame..! * freebies (care of McDonalds) from my brother, so they are obviously old. they used to be ok beans when they used Mocapan... but now Nestle has taken over.

    Cheers

    Bad luck, KoNG, shouldnt happen.

The supposedly indestructible Rocky destructed even before it comes out of its box? Supposed durability is whats meant to give this grinder popular support.

    Kong,

If I were you I would be picking it up directly from the shop , unfortunately couriers dont always treat their deliveries very carefully . Also going to the shop you can check the grinder before taking it.

Yeah I discovered a few small cracks and crazing around the screw holes and in the flange radius when I pulled it out of the box. Plus the plastic was a bit scuffed so it wasnt as polished as I would have liked, especially considering the $$$ spent. But they dont bother me much as they are small and cant be seen unless I look closely and the glare from the Silvia is blinding anyway :). You can be assured it wont affect the quality of the grind.

In fact I have found the chute extends a little too low for me cause I find it hard to fill a double basket (standard overfill for tamping) without loosing a little due to the chute taking the top off as I manoeuvre the portafiller out. Its just by a few mils.

    Re: Rockys cracked nose

    Hi All,

Noticed the same thing on my Rocky when I first received it.... a couple of "stress" cracks on one of the mounting holes. I just contacted my retailer and within a very short time I had a new chute ready to fit sans cracks ;D.

I think if you explained things to Mocopan, they would be only too happy to send you a new chute too and let you replace it.... carefully. The screws need to be barely finger-tight in order to avoid cracking the mounting points all over again :(

    All the best,
    Mal.

    Hi Gang,
when i first told them about it, as you mention mal i expected the response to be we will send you a new chute (too easy) but they said they would replace the whole grinder!! and it was a mocapan delivery not a standard courier, so i would hope they would treat with care.
i too think it is from the assembly process and i dont think ill bother chasing up this one as the cracks are fairly small.
    thanx for the responses!

silvia and rocky are making there way down the coast with me for the break.! our first outing together.. ha ha

    Re: Rockys cracked nose

I would be surprised if the cracks ever got any bigger or caused a real problem however the fact remains they shouldnt be there.

I will also venture a few other thoughts:

A lot is said on the net about silvia and rocky but most only see their own single solitary machine. In my line of business I see LOTS (hundreds) of them. It would be unlikley the cracks you see are caused by transport...the standard of build of these units is generally only average at best. And the actual design of the grinder in some ways does not lend itself to travelling well (although I did say I dont think the cracks have anything to do with transport, just shoddy assembly).

The body is extremely heavy in a compact package, and the base "plate" as you know sticks out about the same distance again as what is screwed to the bottom of the grinder. *This means that the slightest knock in transit will easily bend the plate at the point where it comes away from the main body of the grinder.....

In addition the grinders are tested but assembled dirty and with fingerprints and other marks on, some of the plastic hoppers already have scratches in them, the "beaks" are cracked, the stickers are placed crooked and are already peeling off when the new grinder is unpacked etc etc....

And people keep recommending them and buying them!

Only very few seem to complain, some bring them back (we exchanged one last week for a Solis Maestro Plus with cash back...the buyer wanted it for a present and was not happy with the presentation...

    Regardz,
    FC.

Bummer about getting two cracked noses on consecutive Rockys, KoNG.

This could be an excuse to change/customise the Rockys snout
