    Doser usage: advice please?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi all,

Having thought long and hard about it, and read (vague) stuff from some people on various coffee forums (fori?) Im contemplating getting a grinder with a doser rather than doserless and looking for some advice.

To avoid starting a religious war, Im not looking to solicit opinion on doser versus doserless, but rather wanting to hear how those of you with dosers deal with grinding for single or double shots (at one end of the scale) and the come-back-for-a-coffee crowd (at the other).

Doser design no doubt plays a big part in what is practical here. Im considering the MM Timer model as a the likely choice if I go this way.

    Any information grateful accepted!

    Ciao,

    Dennis

I only grind for a couple cups at a time. I usually weigh out my beans pre-grind. I add a little for overhead (loss, etc.) which is in the neighbourhood of a gram per shot. For larger amounts, i do the same thing. If people want more cups, Ill just repeat the process. It doesnt take that much time to grind a la carte.

I dont weigh my dose. I just use 2 scoops per double (long handle plastic spoon supplied with Rocky). Grind, dose, tap on bench, level off with wooden stirrer, tamp and go.

I find that if I stick to this routine, it will help me adjust my grind as required. If I tamp and cannot lock PF in place easily, I am grinding too fine. If the lock is fine but the flow is too fast, I am grinding too coarse.

The other plus I find with the doser and only grinding as required is that I can leave it going for another 10 seconds or so if I am busy getting other things ready such as milk/cups etc.

As for doing a large number in a sitting, I usually load the grinder up with an amount which I think is likely to be consumed within 2 hours and just grind. My method of dosing has a little wastage in this situation, but not too bad IMO.

I did 8 coffees x 2 a week or so ago, and it all seemed to be pretty smooth.

Lennier, I cant see any advantage in having a doser. It is merely a device to collect ground coffee so it can become stale by the time you consume it.

If you are thinking it will save time and effort....It takes as much time to grind 10-cups worth of beans into a doser as it does individually into portafilters. No time is saved.

It is much more convenient to grind directly into the portafilter, and pull a shot which will be as fresh as possible given the age of the beans.

Having pre-ground coffee sitting in a doser makes no sense. The amount which can be metered will also vary depending on how much is in the doser.

Go doserless and enjoy the freshness and convenience.

    Robusto

While I dont have a doser, so I could be wrong here (who am I kidding) I see that a doser does two things. It is an auto bean grinder (in simple terms) and then dispenses a set amount through the click wheel. Pretty much the lazy mans grinder. ;)

Compared to a doserless grinder, both machines have to grind for exactly the same time; you still have to put in exactly the same amount of beans. The doser is purely and simply a time saving device for commercial applications. It was designed to cope with queues of people waiting for coffee, as are three and four group head machines. If youre using a single group head machine at home then really you cant get past the fact the ground beans are sitting there getting stale while the first of your shots are being pulled.

Squat all to be gained by having one at home unless youre regularly entertaining the troops, with a multi head machine IMO.

    Boris :)

Thanks Nunu and Fatboy, appreciate your perspectives. Anyone else have any usage experience they care to share?
A concensus I seem to be seeing from reading tons of doser/doserless discussions is that the way to approach the doser is to think of it more as a handy receptacle to grind your coffee in to (in the same way as many with doserless grinders grind in to a container then spoon or whatever in to the filter basket). This is the way I would be approaching it. Grind the amount you need in to the doser, dont worry much about how much each dose dispenses, level off the excess and tamp.
I could go in to the pros and cons of this approach as opposed to the doserless approach, but then Id be stepping outside of my own charter! ;D

    Cheers,

    Dennis

With a doser, it is a good idea to modify the sweeps using electrical tape.

One for the Mazzer mini can be found here:

    http://temesblog.blogspot.com/2005/0...no3-sweep.html

Really helps getting those stray grinds out of the doser.
