    Rocky not grinding fine enough

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
My Rocky is less than a year old.

When I started using it, the average grind setting was about 12. It is now around five and I found with one bean that I pretty well cant grind it fine enough at all.

I took the hopper and burr carrier out and cleaned it all and put it back together but got the same result.

It looks like the blades may need replacement but I find this hard to believe as I have been told by a technician that in average home use these blades can last for ten years or more.

    Any thoughts?

I did btw find where the zero point was ie. where the carrier is wound down tight and rotates the bottom blade. I then backed it off slightly and put the hopper back on with the zero point about +4. This though now is about the grind setting required for espresso.

I took it apart again and put it back together and the zero point is -3 which is about what it should be.

I think the grind setting of 4/5 is probably normal as the blades wear.

Before I think what was happening is that there was some coffee in the carrier grooves which made it start to bind at a setting of +4.

    Wattgn,
Are the edges of the facets dull or rounded? Ive had my Rocky for about 15months, put through about 15kg of home and commercial beans (including some rocks) and is not showing any sign of losing its edge. Except in a couple of spots where the rocks left their mark but I was able to blend those out.

As for the moving zero, on reassembly my 0 sits at about + 4.

What is the bean you cant grind fine enough. Why do you need to grind this one finer than others?

    Boris:

Some Bali Shinzan was the one. I was grinding at 4 and it wasnt fine enough and so I took rocky apart thinking something was wrong.

When I put rocky back together I had it on 4(as far as it would go) and it wouldnt grind fine enough. I think it was just some coffee in the threads that was stopping it from going finer so was I took it apart again and cleaned it more and it was fine.

I had run out of that coffee by then so I couldnt test it but I think it will grind OK now.

When I got the Rocky it would grind on about 10 - 12 so it seems as it wears the settings decrease quite a bit which must be normal.

On my Gaggia MDF I had something similar where I couldnt grind fine enough and what happened there was similar. ie. the threads get blocked with coffee oil so you think you cant grind any finer. You then think you need new blades but when you strip it down you find that the burrs are fine. When it is cleaned correctly it goes back together and the grinder will now go down to a much finer setting as the grooves are now clean. Problem solved.

Re: Rocky not grinding fine enough

    Boris:

I am interested now in how these burrs actually work and how they wear.

It looks like de beans go down de middle den de centrifugal forces trow de beans furder and furder towards de sircomefurrence where de beans finally make deir escape down de chute and over de border to Zimbabwe.

It looks like the wear can take place on the edges of the burrs themselves or on the flat surface of the circumference. I would have thought that the critical dimension would be the clearance between the circumference of the two grinding plates which I can see is worn flat. The sharpness of the blades would also be important Im sure.

So anyone out there who knows how these things wear, what is normal and what isnt and what worn out burrs look like???

    Hi Grant,

My Rocky is about 6 months old now, and any grind finer than 15 (uncalibrated) tends to choke Miss Silvia...

    Cheers,

    Chris
