    Mazzer Mini speed?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Hey all, I was lurking around the internets the other day, and was curious in coffeegeeks review of the Mini that he reckons it grinds about 1g/second. Mine takes at least 30-40 seconds to grind a double-shots worth (I dont weigh it on the scales, but thats only around 0.5g/sec...), and as far as I can remember its always been like that.

I realise the US units will be on 60Hz not our local 50Hz, but that should only account for a 20% difference in speed.

How fast do other owners find it?

Sounds slow Matt- unless youre grinding very fine? Typical for a mini-manual is more like 20 sec which is also very slow....but then I have become accustomed to 7 sec Kony-e and 4 sec Robur-e doubles ::)

hmm, not super fine. I usually run it 2-4 notches finer than the "start here" arrow, for a fairly tight shot.

Would tearing it down and giving it a cleanout be of any use? (never done it yet... :-[)

hey mat the mini sounds like its running a few seconds slower than usual.I run a macap, mini and a sunbeam side by side and find the mini to be the slowest, but its the best without a doubt.
Try dissasembling blade system and giving it a good clean, coffe can get stuck between shafts if they have overheated, and then run some grindz cleaner through it. good luck.

    Re: Mazzer Mini speed?

1g/s is about right. I ground two shots worth this morning (~40g) and it took about 50 seconds on a fairly fine grind. Itv was a 50-50 mix of Sumatran + Ethiopian bean.

Hardness of the bean would be a factor. Lightly roasted beans tend to be harder and take longer to grind in my experience.

I wonder if having the weight of beans in a full hopper be a factor as well; the weight helping to push the beans through.

Anyway, my routine is to dump the beans in the hopper, start the grind then by the time Ive grabbed the group handle and wiped out the filter basket, there is usually enough in the doser to start loading the basket without having to wait for the grinder.

Maybe - I only ever put one shots worth (1/4 cup) of beans in at a time.

I cleaned it out last night (that was surprisingly easy!), didnt seem to make much difference to this mornings grind speed though. Blades were nice and clean and sharp, some buildup on the sweepers and the upper burr carrier, but I dont think that would have much influence.

Another interesting thing from the CG review: http://www.coffeegeek.com/proreviews/detailed/mazzermini/firstuse
At the grinders zero point, this set point arrow points at about the 4 oclock position when you are looking directly at the front of the grinder.
I found my zero point had the arrow at about 4:30-5:00 (about "5" on the dial, where the sticker arrow is at "6")

Now, as far as a Philistine like me can tell, none of this is having much effect in the cup, its all observation only. But it someone knows more than me about this Id love to know...

I find the Mini similar speed to my ex-Rocky but as Flynn said I grind while preparing for shot and start the next grind while pulling a shot and dont have to wait for grinder, its all in the routine :) :)

Yeah, it fits into my routine just fine (flushing, getting milk, etc) so its not an issue in the practical sense.

You have to keep in mind that, being a dosered grinder, the MM is designed to operatewith a filled doser so you dispense as needed and keep the doser topped up by hitting the On button from time to time.

It was not designed to have the user standing around waiting for the current shot to be ground. There are doserless on-demand grinders for that purpose.

The Mazzer Mini is certainly no speedster Matt.
My 6 month old Mazzer grinds 18 grams in 30 seconds give or take a second, a little quicker than 1/2 gram sec but not much, you may well be grinding a little finer than me.
Like you I only ever dump a shot (18 grams) at a time in the hopper, I do weigh my shots (Im retired ;))
Regardless, its a great grinder that works very well with my routine.
Have yet to give it a clean out. :)

    Re: Mazzer Mini speed?

    Interesting read...

I just bought a MM and found it takes about 50 seconds to fill a 18g basket. Even though its slow (definitely slower than the sunbeam 0480 and rocky), I thought this was normal until I saw this thread.

This site (http://coffeegeek.com/proreviews/detailed/mazzermini/comparisons) reckons it takes 17 secs for 17g.

Ill try again tomorrow morning and see how it goes. If not, I might have to shoot an email to the shop I bought it from. Ill fill up the hopper to see if the extra weight on top makes a difference - its got about 3cm of beans showing at the moment.

Definitely sounds too slow. It depends somewhat on what beans you are using but 18 - 30 seconds is about what mine takes.
Are you waiting until you hear it stop grinding before you start filling the basket? If so, I recommend you start free-dosing: start thwacking the doser lever a few seconds after grinding starts (perhaps dump the first gram or so in case they contain stale leftover grinds). Continue to thwack as the grinder operates until the basket is full

I add about 20g ( a 1/4 cup measure) to the hopper and grind to fill the basket. Tap the handle gently to settle and add more grinds if necessary.

On the other hand, the place you bought it from may have been using it as a demo grinder and the blades are a bit blunt.

    Re: Mazzer Mini speed?

Thanks Flynn - I didnt really test it out too much at the store. I just had a play with the doser, grind adjustments and went ahead with the purchase.

    What I do is:
    1) Clear the doser (and chute)
    2) Start grind and let it run for about 40 sec
    3) I start dosing my basket until theres nothing left in the doser
    4) I grind a bit more (5~10 seconds) and then clear the chute (to get a bit more beans)
    5) Empty the remainder into my basket.

EDIT: I added about 200g of beans to the hopper. I ran the grinder for 27secs and I had more than enough to fill a double basket. There was a bit left over in the doser, so Ill cut back by 5 seconds to see what the differernce is like tomorrow. Looks like the amount of beans in the hopper makes a difference (either that, or its part of the wearing in process).

Just as a side note, Im quite impressed with the starting point sticker for the mazzer. I was very close to the mark - I had to make it a few notches finer. Im also loving the doser - I can let the grinder do its thing while I prepare (eg get rid of the old puck, pour my milk into the jug etc).

    Re: Mazzer Mini speed?

    2nd Update:
23sec seems to be the magic number for a double basket. I didnít bother weighing it but Im using the stock double basket which is a similar size to the VST 18g basket.

Im a few notches courser than the factory reference point.

JOEL Ė The noise is quite good actually and itís slightly quieter than a Rocky (if youíve ever used it). Itís not as harsh and loud as some of my previous grinders (Solis Maestro & Sunbeam EM0480).
