Cunill El Cafe Tranquilo - Irregular grind size... any suggestions?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Hi All... my first post here, and hope you can help.

I have a Cunill El Cafe Tranquilo which I have had less than a year (bought new), and seem to be having an issue with the grind being irregular. I am finding that I need to change the grind setting (finer) a couple of times if I am doing multiple shots, and on closer inspection of the coffee grinds, they are quite irregular in size. If I dont change the grind, the coffee shot just runs through like theres rocks in the group handle.

I only tend to put the amount of beans in the grinder that I want to use, rather than leave them in the top chamber, and am wondering if that could be contributing to the problem? But also, is there anyone else who has had a similar issue with this grinder, and any suggestions for what might help sort it out. I see from other reviews that generally this grinder performs pretty well, but this is just frustrating, as I never really know how the shot is going to come out, and can get several dodgy shots because of it. :(
I try to give the grinder a good clean every few weeks to clear out the build up *from the grinds left behind.
(BTW, my coffee machine is a Sunbeam EM6910)

Hope there is some good suggestions from the collective coffee wisdom out there... *:)

Hi GDW; long time to wait for a first post.

I cant give you the answer but want to mention that I only measure enough for each shot as well and dont have the problem.

Have you checked for grind irregularity before getting a good shot?
In other words, tried to prove this is why some shots are good and others are not.

So are you saying you can pull the first one, then the shots become progressively faster flowing? (without changing grind)

I wouldnt imagine this would be a problem along with TG, you will find that 99% of CSs do this for freshness! ;)

have you ruled out the machine? if so......how

Ive had no exposure to the Cunill, but had a similar problem with grind inconsistencies with my rocky, which was fixed with the tape mod, is this possible on a Cunill?

    cheers

    Hi GDD,

You might want to try with a few extra beans in the hopper....particularly if your doing multiple shots , that keeps a bit of pressure on them ...... 3 shots have 70g in the hopper.

When I do small amounts like your doing .... I use a cut off placky milk bottle and place an old tamper on the beans to maintain pressure and stop the jumpers.

Apart from the ugly appearence and the noise of the CT I have found them very good grinders and without question the best value for money at their pricepoint.

I would like to upgrade to a super jolly or a better doserless name grinder , but cant really justify it as the CT is still delivering the goods.

GDD, I have been using my CT doser model for 3 years now with great results. I always grind 18gms (weighed), so the small amount of beans should be no prob and tape or other mods should not be necessary. The only time I adjust is for different varieties of beans and freshness of roast and because I drink "heaps" of coffee I check the first grind each day and every now and then there may be a one click adjustment.

Personally I think there is a fault with the machine itself and if under warranty take it back, (if no warranty still take it somewhere and get it fixed ::)). I bought mine from Sibonis (site Sponsor) :D who are very knowledgeable with these grinders, maybe they can help.
