Best grinder for Rancilio Silvia 2009 under $500

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi
I have just upgraded to a Rancilio Sylvia and now realise my old grinder has to go.
Could someone please give me some options for a grinder that would suit this machine up to $500

I have read a lot of comments on many grinders and dont know which way to turn now.

    Thanks

    Welcome to CS johnox

What make of grinder are you using at present?
You maybe able to pick up a sacond hand "Rocky" for around that money. That would be my pick anyway.

    Thanks Chris
I had a deLonghi, it is the solis 100 i think. I have taken it apart and to adjust the grind to its finest but its still too granular.

I can get a new Rocky for $480

This is the only one that is suggested on most sites but was wondering whether there are any others that would do the same job.

    Cheers

Actually a new Rocky is around $500 and probably the most logical option for you. The Silvia/Rocky would have to be the most popular combo around.

You may also want to consider the Compak K3 Touch which is a doserless grinder. The RRP is $600 and not sure how much below this its available for. Even for $600 I believe its worthwile stretching the budget a little more.

Other options in the sub $500 mark include the Isomac Granmacinino and Ascaso i-mini.

Always buy the best grinder you can afford.

Rocky grinder is pretty much made as the Silvia companion (Rancilio + Rancilio)

Quite a number of folks have great success with the Sunbeam EM0480. It is a good quality burr grinder which you do have to use (in my experience) at its finest grind setting, but my Silvia responds very well to it and produces delicious coffee with a wonderful crema etc etc. It will cost you around the $200.00 mark give or take. Its motor has a 5 year warranty and the rest of it 12 months.

Im not saying it is as good as a Rocky (which I will also buy soon and keep the Sunbeam for my wifes & mother in-laws decaf) or other higher end grinders but it certainly does what is required of it to get a great cup from a Silvia.

If it is a compromise in grind quality it is only very minor.

    Cheers!

Id have to vote for the Rocky also. Can be brought at a good price, new or pre-loved. Do the mods, well worth the effort.

The first proper espresso machine I used was a Silvia, and we paired it with my mates Iberital and eventually my Ascaso i1. The Ascaso fits somewhere between the Rocky and Compak K3/Mazzer Mini in terms of burr-size (54mm). RRP is $475, but I am selling mine at the moment (upgraded to Compak K6) so you can find it in the CS For Sale section!

FWIW, you want the best possible grinder for your budget. Most people who spend time on this site just keep upgrading, so the better the grinder you buy this time, the longer it will last you in the upgrade process!

    Cheers
    Stuart.
