Will a Lux grind finely enough for Silvia?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi all,

As stated earlier, Ill most likely be purchasing a Silvia by about Christmas time.

My only concern is will my Lux grinder grind finely enough? It does pretty well with the Imat Junior but Ive heard that a Silvia is more demanding of a finer grind?

Any suggestions. I cant really upgrade from the Lux for at least 12 months. I only bought it about 3 months ago and my SO would basically murder me ;-)

Warren, you will not have an issue in sticking with the Lux. With all of the stuff written about grinders it is easy to be frozen into doing nothing or going completely overboard. The major task the grinder has is to produce a consistent grind with a minimum of fine dust particles which tend to increase bitterness. You also want consistency from grind to grind. Grind consistency is related to the type of burrs used and the ability of the mechanism to securely locate them when the grinder is doing its thing. Generally, the better the grinder, the tighter will be the tolerances and therefore the less play in the burrs (i.e. relative to each other). Then you have other variable such as doser/non-doser, ergonomics/ease of use, fineness of adjustment, repeatability of adjustment etc.

Even though you might contemplate changing the Lux later, it will be a very good start that will enable you to find your way to making consistently good coffee with the Silvia.

    Cheers,

    Graeme

    Thanks Graeme,

Its just that if Im spending upwards of $600 for a Silvia I dont want to be looking for a grinder that costs nearly as much after just buying one (the Lux) 3 months ago.

The Lux/Imat Junior combo works well. Its just that you hear so many good reports on the durability of a Silvia.

The ravages of upgrade fever. :-/ If I had my way all oer again Id buy a top quality grinder first and worry about the machine afterwards.

From what I understand the lux grinder will be fine. Try it you may be really happy with it. Better than no grinder at all.

Initially the Solis 166 did an ok job on my Silvia.

Remember if you have your grinder set correctly you dont need a gorilla tamp. Look at the professional Baristas none of them do anything like 30lb. Think of all the workcover claims. Ive even seen claims of 60lb tamps on alt.coffee but the folks that claim this probably think StarBucks is an ok coffee.

Like gwdcoffee say it just has to be consistant.

Once you get your Silvia private message me and Ill grind some coffee on my Rocky so you can compare.

Re: Will a Lux grind finely enough for Silvia?

Ive got a Silvia paired with a Lux grinder. I did quite a bit of reading before I bought my stuff, and I dont recall anyone complaining with this set-up. If money wasnt a factor, most people would go for the rocky/silvia combo (ignoring the Mini Mazzer ;)). But youll be able to get the consistency theyre talking about with a Silvia & a Lux.

Seeing as you own one already, Im sure you already know its particular weaknesses. Dont worry about not being able to grind fine enough. I dont think Ive ever used the finest setting on the Lux, and I have choked Silvia quite a few times.

I suspect you wont notice a whole lot of improvement in shot quality changing to the Silvia unless you get everything perfect (ie beans, grind, tamp, wind direction etc). Im guessing the steaming would be better though.

    Hope that helps,
    Adrian

Also if you have it set right for espresso, then wind it out to do some vac pot coffee, then return it to the same espresso setting it will be different.
Ive found that too Mark. Though all that said it generally only takes a small amount of coffee to pass through the grinder and it seems to reset itself.

In hindsight I paid $260 for the Lux. For $300 I could have purchased an Iberital Challenge which has the same guts as the Lux but a stepless worm drive.

The problem with espresso equipment is were always thinking in hindsight. Part of the fun ;-)
