Anyone have any experience with Ranc Rocky doserless?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Looking at buying one of these grinders but my previous experience with doser less grinders is they spray more grinds out on the bench than in the basket?

Re: Anyone have any experience with Rancilio Rocky doserless?

There are a host of threads in this forum on the rocky. Its not too bad and definitely far better at getting grinds into a basket than say, a Sunbeam.

Given recent price hikes, I dont think it represents good value as a new purchase any more when a Compak K3T is little dearer and a far superior grinder.

In my experience the rocky does not spray grinds anywhere. Mine simply dropped the grinds into my FP basket. However rocky does clump the grinds - which need breaking up. This is a problem for most doserless grinders.

If the pice of rocky has gone up there may be better options now.

Sorry as one who has used the K3 T, rocky and Sunbeam grinders for some time..

The EM04xx *grinder series make it a pinch to get grinds into the basket..

Quality / consistency... Err depending on the beans... May be another matter/topic.

    Looks Vs functionality...

Rocky has its fan base and is a no frills stepped grinder...

The K3 T Bigger, looks the part and step-less...

My *gut says K3 T over the Rocky 5 days of the working week.. *But there are other grinders in this range..

You just need to be very clear as to Looks Vs functionality (Espresso/ plunger/ drip/ different users/ mix of all etc etc) and the issues of location and throughput.... *

No grinder manage static and stray grinds perfectly and depending on ya kitchen bench layout and colour scheme... * Here is hoping no one is is a clean freak as it will come back to USER......

Re: Anyone have any experience with Ranc Rocky doserless?

One of the lovely things and the horrible things about this forum is that people can always come up with something nice to say about anything. Whilst thats lovely, it can lead to some obfuscation of information for people who just want a simple answer to buy something.

Like Chris said, and from experience of having owned a rocky for a few years and used the K3 Touch a fair bit, the Rocky represents poor value compared with the K3 Touch, which is just an all around better grinder.

If you look around, you will read legions of posts about how the Rocky is fantastic. These need to be read with the following in mind:
    1. many of those posts are outdated;
    2. many of those posts will be from people who have not had much experience with other comparable grinders; and
    3. some of those posts operate under the delusion that for some reason it is better to pair two products from the same manufacturer (ie. the silvia and rocky).

    Cheers,
    Luca

Re: Anyone have any experience with Ranc Rocky doserless?

Fender22 i have owned a rocky now for 18months and to simply answer your question, I dont find it very messy. Instead of grinding into the basket I have cut the bottom off a sour cream container and wedge this into the basket and under the spout of rocky. Result is no mess. A simple stir with a skewer and most of the clumps are removed. Tamp and load, and be consistant!
As mentioned by many others Rocky has its limitations
I have made it stepless by using plastic tubing and have given it a dose of plumbers tape. (see mods in this forum) This IMO made a huge difference. I would not have known how to do this without the help of people here.
Rocky is small and chunky and doesnt take up much bench space. I am happy with the rocky/silvia duo.

Having said that, after trying to seriously make good coffee for about a couple of years now and learning and listening to many others who give of the their knowledge and expertise, I am already looking for upgades *:D

A rocky is a good starting point. Spend what u can afford, buy the best u can and
    Just enjoy the journey

    Hi Fender22,
Cicardas option sounds like a good one and will help out with both good distribution of coffee grounds in your basket and getting rid of the clumps as he said.
I got my Rocky through a CS member who had cut the bottom out of a 2l plastic milk bottle and placed under the metal basket holder. This helps pick up ~95% of any stray grinds I find. To get rid of clumpiness, I use a Click Clack lid and pump every few seconds while grinding which gets rid of all clumps. You do find that the grinds end up at the back of the basket doing this though, and will need to stop grinding about half way through to make way for your full basket full of coffee.
Cant really comment on how the Rocky compares to other grinders performance wise as its the only one Ive ever used and bought it with the silvia second hand. I like that it is a compact unit and feels as though its built to last. Probably would have considered the K3T if I was buying brand new after reading a lot of good things about it here though. I kind of think the short hopper version of the K3T looks a bit awkward, but certainly cuts the height down. The full size hopper version of the K3T towered over the Rocky and made it look like a toy when I saw them side by side.
Good luck with whatever you choose!

Re: Anyone have any experience with Ranc Rocky doserless?

Ive had rocky going on 2 years now and have seen little or no stray grinds at all

First thing i did was file the PF holder in the drawer, with that in use I found a lot of grinds not making their way into the PF

Rocky is stepped whereas I think the K3 is stepless - ive ran into situations where I want to just do a tiny adjustment, but rocky in standard form doesnt allow that

If I was in the market for a grinder os this type id probably be looking at the K3T myself

Re: Anyone have any experience with Ranc Rocky doserless?

    Hey Phrosyboi,

My Rocky came with the plastic tubing mod already done to make it stepless. Seems to be an effective and easy way to get around the stepped issue.

Do you do anything about the clumpiness?

Does a regular 15kg tamp tend to get rid of the clumps anyway just out of interest, or can this encourage channeling? Pumping the lid seems to get rid of the clumps and is no great hassle but havnt tried without doing this.

Re: Anyone have any experience with Ranc Rocky doserless?

Only thing I do to deal with the clumping is to tamp by hand at first, then with the pullman

Ive been experimenting a bit lately with grind settings and tamp, and have found that my pours are more even if im grinding finer and tamping less (but hand tamping first to help break up some clumps)

Cant say im sure of how heavy my tamp is now but I dont think id be going near 15kg at the moment

Re: Anyone have any experience with Ranc Rocky doserless?

The Rocky is a very solid grinder. *My doserless does not spray. *With the coffee bean under the button and the plastic tubing on it makes a significant improvement on an already good grinder. *It is built like a tank. *I am confident it will outlast me. *The very easy and easily reversed mods I refer to make a very noticeable difference in the cup. Given how easy the plastic tubing mod and the coffee bean mod is to make it stepless, I would consider this aspect when comparing and noting that the Rocky is stepped but others are stepless...the level of adjustment you can get with these 2 mods is very fine...

    Cheers

    Hi Ozscott,

Read your post and was curious as to what the coffee bean mod involves and achieves (presumably something to help make stepless). Tried to do a search but only came up with your post.

    cheers

Re: Anyone have any experience with Ranc Rocky doserless?

    I have had the rocky for a few years now and have made some improvements over this time that include;

    1. plastic cup fitted to portafilter when grinding. Improvement =7/10
    2. teflon tape mod. *Improvement =7/10
    3. stepless mod. *Improvement =10/10
    4. click/clack lid mod. Improvement =4/10

The last thing I have done was to bend a 200mm long 10x1.5 piece of aluminium flat bar to fit in to the doser chute of rocky to remove all of the leftover grinds in the chute. It needs to be a 120mm straight for handle then bend up 40mm then bend straight 40mm. You will then need to remove the top burr so you can see where the grinds enter the chute. You will then need to file the end of the 40mm straight so that it can reach to the back of the chute .Size about 8mm. Make sure it does not enter into the grinding area. To use the tool use grinder as normal, when you finish grinding (make sure grinder stops) use tool to remove grinds left in chute then take out. Do a quick start of grinder(make sure grinder stops) then remove last bit of grinds.I found this tool very good to remove freshly ground coffee from the chute before it goes stale. This has stopped alot of channelling in the puck. Improvement =8/10.

    Cheers.

Re: Anyone have any experience with Ranc Rocky doserless?

    Thanks AM.

You dont need to use a bean...anything that keeps the button down to allow constant adjustment rather than stepped. The plastic tubing allows you to move the hopper/collar smoothly and slowly and without it changing on you when you take you hands off it...

    Cheers
