Mazzer Major - what a beast!

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi guys,

Im not sure if this is the right forum for this but Ive just (finally) upgraded to a Mazzer Major, and what a machine. Quick and surprisingly quiet. Once dialed in and marked Ive got no problem going from plunger to espresso, its all too easy. No static, no anything bad at all. From what I can gather there are no drawbacks to this machine... is it just me or is this the perfect grinder for all round grind settings. I know conicals are what they are, but call me crazy if this major isnt better for home use when going from plunger to espresso, then stovetop and back all before lunch.

Sorry again, theres no real point to this post, I just wanted to let someone, anyone, everyone know about the recent upgrade who might be vaguely interested as the people in my life couldnt give a rats!

For anyone interested keep an eye out for a Mazzer Super Jolly thatll be making its way to the sale listings as soon as I can take a nice shot of it...

Thanks again for letting me let that out, it feels good.

    All the best,

Yep The Major is a a beast
I am also a lucky owner of this grinder and a big BNZ conical
Both produce a slightly different taste in the cup and some coffees taste better from the major

I love it, every time I use it it brings me so much pleasure! Its quick and pretty quiet, and grinds so evenly it surprises me. With my old grinder and an aeropress, there were so many fines I had to grind much courses than now because the fines would just clog it. Now I can grind pretty fine for the aeropress just because there are so few fines, it dosent clog up. Same goes with plunger.

I really love finally having a good grinder, I know there are many better grinders, but this one is so good I know itll keep me happy for many years to come - possibly longer!

Sadly since my last post my Mazzer Major went to a good home with another CSer

You will be missed my friend :-*

The grinding duties are now entrusted to the BNZ MD74

Yeah, I saw yours leaving soon after I got mine.

At least youve still got a nice one, youve not gone back to a blade grinder from kmart!

Between the Major and your BNZ, any diference in the cup? On paper they look very similar, Im interested to hear your thoughts.

Ive finally upgraded from a Cunill Tranquilo to a second hand Mazzer Major electronic. I have only had a chance to put stale beans through while I dial it in.

MeP - if you have the doserless version, would you mind sharing your grind fineness setting and timer setting for a double shot?

    Hi Garbage,

    Good choice on the Major!

Ive got a doser, but the grind settings should be similar. That being said, settings move from bean to bean and as the beans stale.

What Id suggest, and Im no pro at all, find the zero point, move approx 10 notches courser for a starting point. Thatll get you in the ball park for espresso - but that will change for each bean, its not a static setting.

re timer, sorry, Ive no real idea. I think, and this is only a faint memory, it takes 7 seconds for me to get 14 grams for a double in the la pavoni.

I know what its like dialing this thing in, you just churn through the beans! I hope the info above helps a little, sorry I couldnt be more specific.

    Cheers,
    Matthew

    Gday garbage.... :)

The Major-E is roughly as fast a Robur-E so I would set it on 4.5-5.0 seconds for a double shot and go from there, singles are only 2.0-2.5 seconds :o

Definitely qualifies as a beast ;)

    Hey Mal,

Thanks for that. Im surprised by that as Im now at 6.5 seconds for a double shot and Im still getting a wee bit more than a trickle and end up with a nice and dry puck. Using very fresh beans and a VBM Domobar Super.

The major E is a little slower than the robur E 5.5-6.5 seconds for a double sounds normal

    Hi Garbage,

The way to dial in this style of grinder is to free dose in your preferred manner to allow you to set the grind size and pour according to your preference. Once thats done and youre happy, then play with time to replicate the dose and therefore pour.

Time can vary significantly, especially if youre bedding new burrs. My Kony-e started at circa 11 seconds for a double. I am now more like 6.75 seconds.

    Hope that helps.

Im down to just under 10.0 seconds now with my current roast batch. Its just so easy to use its almost ridiculous.... Mind you, Ive only just hit 1,000 shots so theres probably still a bit of running in to do ;)

Thats pretty quick compared to the Mazzer Mini Mal, have not timed it but I reckon around 30 seconds to grind 18 grams "will time it this arvo" fine for home use but it would drive ya nuts in a commercial situation. :)

Yeah, its not too shabby at all Jon.... :)

From trawling over the Net for info, it would seem that the average time for the Kony-E is about 7.5 seconds for a 16g Double. My Double shots are closer to 20g for the way I do things so 9.5 seconds or thereabouts is not too bad considering.... ;)

my Macap is about the same. Its slower than I originally expected it would be but very happy with it nonetheless... its fine for home. the revhead in me would like a more powerful, faster one "just because" but its not going to happen any time soon.

Have timed a couple of 18 gram grinds since posting this, I was pretty right, approx 32 seconds to grind the 18. :)

My M4D does 19.5 grams in around 9.5 seconds. I dont see myself upgrading to a conical beast anytime [if ever] soon. ::)

Excited to say that I will joining the Mazzer Major user group next week. Ive ordered a rebuilt second hand doser version which will be a huge upgrade from the Rocky I have been using for 18 months. Looking forward to better grind and in a quarter of the time! :D
