    Upgrade from Rocky options

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I am wanting to upgrade from my 5 yo Rocky. I am looking for a grinder to match with a Giotto PP. My first thoughts were for a doserless model and I am leaning towards Macap M4D.
Price wise I would need to keep it under $1500. Is it worth considering other options, including used?

I cant vouch for anything other than the M4D in that price range, but mine works very well, and isnt a giant in the kitchen. It was also a decent step up from my previous Rocky.

    Re: Upgrade from Rocky options

    Hi Alan,

I havent changed my opinion that the M4D is the best of the planar burr doserless grinders in the home environment. Its quiet, much more accurate for delivery of dose than the Mazzer and also twice as fast. For the same spend you also get chrome finish rather than the black or silver of the Mazzer. We have stock.

My all time favourite doserless grinder for home is the Mazzer Kony-e, but its much more expensive and unrealisitc for most home setups.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks for comments.

Greg - good to hear you found moving from Rocky to Macap a step up.

TG - I see you have to M5. Can I ask why you think a doser is important?

Chris - Comments helpful re smaller machines. Not going to be able to stretch budget to a Kony-e, in a new machine at least!

    It gives you more options.
You can use a doser for one shot but you cant grind for more than one basket at a time with a doserless model.

Also, the action of sweeping the grinds out through the doser can break up any lumps.

Ive used a small doserless (only the Sunbeam 0450) but prefer my dosered grinders.

The doser catches all the grinds; Ive read some doserless are messy.

Interested as to why its your favourite?

Any chance you have one on display? Ive got a major-e and have been interested in upgrading to the kony-e.

    Gday mft.... :)

Ill just toss my hat into the ring for this one.... ;)

Its just a matter of preference really mate. I really do enjoy the coffee made with a Kony-E over that of a Major (albeit a Doser version).

The Kony seems to enhance the brighter notes and widens the overall spectrum of the flavour profile for my palate and does produce a different cup when using identical beans. Just happens that I prefer what the Kony does over that of the Major. This doesnt make the Kony better than the Major or vice-versa, just different.... 8-)
