    Rancilio Rocky grinder

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I have em0480 and have been wanting to upgrade to a stepless grinder namely K3T / Wega Mini.

Reading bout the stepless mod for rocky and looking to save a bit of cash I went for the Rocky.

Recieved it yesterday, pulled a few shots, and seriously regret buying this grinder.

Its not that there is anything wrong with the grinder just doesnt feel like the uprade that would come from a grinder worth 250 bucks more than the em0480

There are definite advantages. It is a much quieter grinder and much more solid sturdy unit. The difference in grind adjustment seems to be about 4-6 seconds in pour compared to 6-9 seconds from the em0480.

However. . . . Still left wanting and will be selling the rocky and extending myself bit further for K3T that i was set on before got this. *Was going to get click clack lid, stepless mod and teflon tape upper burr carrier but will be selling.

Cant sell on snobs yet as I have only been a member for 9 days but will try evilbay. *Im on northside of Brisbane. *This grinder would obviously suit newbuyer as I have only done half a dozen shots.

em0480 wasnt going when I ordered (See Need Help - Broken em0480 post) and have fixed it in mean time and am happy using this untill i upgrade.

Hope im not breaking any site rules with this post, will advertise on this site as soon as i can

Hi rvjodal, there are a lot of happy Rocky users on CS, I was one. For what its worth/takes why not grab some teflon tape & a piece of tube, do the 2 mods [about 15 minutes] and try it. What have you got to lose :-/ iof it still doesnt make you happy, by all means buy the KT3, a great grinder, but you already have this one...........my 22 cents [inflation you know ::)]

    Re: Rancilio Rocky grinder

If i cant get at least 400 for it i prob will. The thing that let me down most was when I put my usual two scoops of beans in that would fill my 18g synesso basket from my em0480, it only half filled it from the Rocky and seemed very clumpy.

Its a lot quieter and doesnt spray grinds everywhere like the sunbeam but the grind was slow and clumpy and seemed like the grinds were getting stuck/lost somewhere.

Tried putting a little more than the usuall ammount in the hopper but still didnt fill the basket and the clumpiness gets worse the finer the grind (to be expected).

I give the em0480 a few taps while running the motor and it virtually clears all the grinds, within reason. And it seems a common complaint stale grinds are left in the em0480, but in my very very limited experience with a Rocky it seems worse.

Has anyone installed a click clack lid and noticed a difference in clearing the grinds on a Rocky.

I had in mind to do the mods but because of my initial dissapointment in what i thought would have been a clearly superior grinder, am a bit reluctant

Feel like a bit of whinger..... or snob maybe

I did use the CC lid, yes better, perfect no. I did what you do, measure beans, grind, CC and away we go. I now have a Macap M4D and whilst it is a much better grinder [as you would expect] it still clumps[to some degree] and retains some coffee grinds. If you want zero retained grinds you may need to go to the Versalab..........but your credit card & budget may suffer slightly ::)

Good luck with your search and quest :)

I know there are always grinds retained cant help that. And clumping can be issue when grinding fine.

Just that the retaining grinds thing seems like a bigger issue with the more expensive Rocky. Might try and source one of them lids and see how much it helps.

The em0480 is so light you can lift it and lean it foward and tap some of the grinds out. The Rocky is a beast and not so easy to move, not a bad thing its just more heavy duty grinder

The lid is excellent. I use it on my rocky for drip coffee. It gets rid of all of the retained grinds.

One thing youll get with the Rocky over the 0480 is longevity.
The Sunbeam still retains a lot more grounds than you can tap out and have a think about how much you might be shortening its life with all that tapping.

The CC lid is said to make a big difference to the Rocky.
I do something similar with my Macap but unfortunately CC lids dont fit it.

Youve also already said yourself that the adjustment on the Rocky is better.

Add everything up and I think the extra $250 is fair.
