Is the Iberital Challenge Grinder good enough for the Rancilio Silvia?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi,

I currently have a Gaggia Classic and its not performing as good as it use to so I was looking at upgrading to the Rancilio Silvia V3.

I currently have the Iberital Challenge and was thinking if I need to upgrade to the Rancilio Rocky Grinder.

Would the Iberital Challenge do the job or would I be better off upgrading?

    H mtarros,

The Iberital will be ok, but a better grinder would lead to a significat improvement. FWIW, Id skip the Rocky unless you can find a cheap pre-loved one. A new Compak K3T is not much more than a new Rocky and the K3T is far superior.

    Good luck ;)

    do the job
Short answer is YES BUT *::) A better grinder will always grind more uniformly and quicker etc. The IC I used to have did an ok job for espresso until I sold it on.

If the machine is giving you problems and you cant or dont want to fix them then just do the machine first and go back to saving for a grinder. Personally I would skip the rocky step and jump up into a K3 or similar range to get a noticeable improvement over the IC.

Thanks for the reply. I have had a look at the K3 and it does look like a good grinder.

My coffee machine is still working but it does not seem to be as strong as it use to be when pulling a shot.

I have adjusted the grind and still no luck, also not getting any crema.

It has been very good but the last couple of weeks its been like this, might be time to upgrade both of them.

coffee-a-roma have a package so might get that.

mm I have seen it before with old coffee at work but I use fresh coffee ordered from a farmer in Cairns.

I think its from the coffee machine not having enough pressure.

Something else to check and do. When was the last time you stripped and cleaned the IC? My old one and the Ascaso I now have are prone to a build up of fines in and around the sweeper under the lower burr. This build up caused the grind to go off badly. It is possible you may be blaming the machine for a grind and or a bean issue?

I just tried cleaning the grinder and also tried a new bag and it did seem better and got crema. :)

When I flush the coffee machine it does not seem to get as much water out. The steam wand is leaking water from the base so not too sure if the boiler is dying also.

It has been a good machine and have had both of them for around 4 years so its time for an upgrade.

Is there a Sponsors in brisbane that sells the Rancilio Silvia V3 and K3?

coffee-a-roma seem the best so far but are not in Brisbane.
Im a bit conserned about getting it posted up.

At least you have improved again for a while 8-)

The Gaggia due to its aluminium boiler will most likely have a good build up of scale internally (even if the water was filtered). If you are feeling a bit handy then it might be worth a strip and clean (you will most likely need a few new gaskets). If you have it stripped down then Citric Acid from the supermarket can be used or there are some scale removers that can be used with it still assembled from the likes of Bombora . So a rebuild and some new seals might get you a few more years yet.

Might be worth continuing to have a play for a bit :)

Yea the aluminium boiler is a little bit of the down side for the gaggia classic.

I am getting very picky with my coffee and its not tasting as good as it use to. I did do a descale not too long ago to try and see if it would help.

It did for a bit, might be time for another descale.

I think ill get the Rancilio and the K3 in a couple of weeks.

Was thinking of trying to roast my own coffee too but might put that off for a bit.

Got it all on the Friday and set it all up today and its much better.

Get alot more crema, I have ordered a coffee roaster from BeanBay so should make much better coffee once I get that all sorted out.

Just wanted to say thanks for all of the help in picking that grinder.

Ill have to start reading up about roasting now. :)

You have done a very nice upgrade there, and roasting your own coffee to boot. :)
The Roasters section will have information you need, and tweaks that others have relinquished.
That Behmor is a great value roaster.
When you have done your basics right on the Silvia and K3, and you think you can improve, do a small change at a time to see if it does improve.
Sometimes humidity and the various types of coffee bean can affect the shot on some days.

    Gary :)

Yes it is a very nice upgrade it was the machine that I originally wanted but went with the Gaggia as it was cheaper.

I have been making coffee all week end, the Rancilio has soo much more steaming power and the K3 is a very nice grinder. :)

I am get very excited about coffee again and cant wait to start roasting my own coffee.

Yea I have had issue with humidity before and you have to just adjust the grind when it goes wrong.

I had a laugh not sure if im going to go as far as getting a machine to monitor that.
