    Hi Gavin,
What grinder are you using with your Junior?
    Did you have to upgrade?
    Cheers

    Hi Corderito,

I upgraded from an Ascaso i-mini to a Macap M5 when I owned a BZ07. Then further down the track, upgraded from the BZ07 to the VBM.

Did I have to upgrade from the i-mini to the M5? Depends. If your concern is simply for a grinder to grind fine enough for the VBM, then i-mini and the likes will be fine. But if your concern is about whats in the cup, then in my opinion, the M5 and its likes are a minimum - if you can afford it, go even better. Makes a huge difference like you wouldnt believe.

    Thanks Gavin,
Ive finally come around to the idea of upgrading my old Nemox grinder, but it seems a lot of people also give a lot of air time to tampers .... Does a tamper really matter that much? :-?

As long as the base of the tamper is a good fit for the basket (no more than 2mm smaller in diameter) then no, the tamper itself makes little difference except to feel or if you are using it all day and pumping out 100s of cups. (Pride of ownership not included!)

A good grinder is WAAAY more important. (not to say WAAAY more expensive too. ;D )

A basic aluminium tamper does a great job and costs like $30.
Just make sure it fits well... mine is actually 1.5-2mm smaller than the vbms basket, and Im now looking for a tamper with a more snug fit.

So..take your filter basket with you when you go shopping for a tamper.
Apart from better (more even) compacting abilities, it leaves less mess on the side of the basket and makes cleaning around the group seal much easier.
