(Brand new) Sunbeam EM0480 help please!

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hey guys

I bought a Sunbeam EM6910 + EM0480 & some fresh Merlo beans over the weekend. Ive used this machine/grinder/coffee combo heaps in the past & am very familiar with it. Straight out of the box the grinder ground waaayyyy too fine (to the point where I couldnt even extract more than a few drops of espresso, even on the most coarse setting). Did a bit of searching & read about the spacers. Called Sunbeam & they also suggested the spacer trick.

So I went and bought some, chucked them in last night & now the thing wont grind at all. Well it grinds, but the ground coffee just piles up on top of the burrs rather than dropping down the chute & into the basket like it should. I pulled the spacers back out & it grinds (but is obviously too fine) so this problem is obviously caused by the spacers.

Anyone got any ideas? Ive got a replacement on order but itll take a week & Im nowhere near that patient.

What did you use for spacers? The sunbeam ones are more like shims than bolt washers so you may have just moved it too far. Otherwise it could be that the top burr is not fully seated properly.

Used the Sunbeam ones. I got 2 & have tried with just 1, both & no joy on either.

I had this problem when I pulled it apart for cleaning one time. When I put it back together the range 0-24 was a grind range of really fine to just a little less! I pulled it apart and just tried again and the range became normal again. I dont know the cause of it but the spacers would only be making it grind even finer I think.

Firstly - where are you? (please update your profile)
Secondly, be a little patient, read the manual and try putting it back together again.
Did you make sure the white marks lined up on the top and bottom burrs.

Spacers will only make it finer.

Have pulled them apart a million times before, everything lines up etc so thats all fine.

However Sunbeam told me that I needed additional spacers...if theyre making it finer then this will explain things. Ill pull them out tonight & have another crack.

If you look carefully, youll notice the spacer raises the bottom burr closer to the *top one, thereby decreasing the gap between them.
    i.e. finer.

If you remove all the spacers and it still grinds too fine then you need a new grinder.

Note: One spacer is approximately equivalent to 7 graduations on the grind adjustment collar.
