    Azkoyen M01 manual or advice

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I just bought an old Azkoyen M01, but it came without a manual. Does anyone have a manual for this, or know how to program it? Ill work out the basics, but it would be nice to know what options there are.
I did find a parts schematic on the web, but no sign of a manual - only the manual for the newer model

Re: Azkoyen M01 manual or advice

Having had the grinder for a full day now, I have worked out the basics, but cant tell if it is possible to change it from grinding one dose ahead, to grind on demand. I know the newer M02 can do this, but controls are different.

Also, there is a button with a picture of several coffee beans on it and when I go into program mode for this button, I can set the display to show everything from "100-0" through to "50 -50" in steps of "5". Looks like a percentage, but it doesnt seem to do anything and from reading the programming manual for the M02 model, I think it may just be a display thing (though who knows why they think that might be useful).

    Any tips would be appreciated.

Now I know more about it, this grinder probably wasnt the best choice for a home environment, but it certainly produces better grinds than the Breville BCG450. If I cant set it to grind on demand, Ill have to modify the internals to achieve the same thing. I dont want grinds sitting in it overnight and wasting up to 50% of my beans.

When I opened it up, the state of it inside was rather disgusting. Makes me think twice about ordering coffees in your average cafe as I now know what their grinders might have lurking inside. It is nice and clean now though, between the vacuum, compressor and plenty of hot water/detergent on the appropriate parts.

Is it similar at all to this one being reviewed on YouTube....

Seems to be a rare beast, even in the States :(

Mal, the grinder in the video looks identical to this one at Espresso Company Australia.

    That helps us wm,

That grinder is a rebadged Azkoyen Cappricio,

Perhaps a search on that term will turn up something useful...

    Good luck.

Re: Azkoyen M01 manual or advice

Unfortunately, the q9 (which seems to be a capriccio) is the newer version.
Ive got manuals for that but mine is different (M01 rather than M02)..
Setting the capriccio to grind on demand requires going into programming mode, but mine has no "prog" button. There may be a way using some service engineer only mode, or it may have been added for the newer model. There were quite a few changes between the two grinders.

I think Ill do some mechanical mods tonight if I have time and can always put it back if I find out a way to reprogram in the future.

M01 has no grind on demand feature

They are a heavy clunky noisy and unreliable machine

Cappricio (m02) is the same (apart from some very minor changes) as Q9 the name change occured when Quality Espresso purchased Azkoyen

    Thanks for that confirmation.

As for your other comments, it is certainly heavy at approx 20kg, but Ive not found it particularly noisy compared to my little breville.

When you say it is unreliable, is that just because of all the electromechanical components involved in the pregrind storage and dispensing, or are there motor/grind path issues that you know of?
Mine seems in pretty good shape for a ten year old machine, but then I dont know if it has ever been repaired.

One thing I do like is that you can remove the bean hopper and just use the lid in its place - it still holds about 150gm of beans and is much shorter. Still dwarfs my gaggia classic though (photo to follow).

Yep the main problem was the bushes in the doser sectiion (where the big coils are) being battered by the massive force of the coils, also blocking up and the plastic trousers would break regularly

Ta for that, hopefully mine will be reliable once Ive disconnected the solenoids and trapdoors so it just dispenses straight down the same tube all the time.

Re: Azkoyen M01 manual or advice

Tried that, all seemed to work, then I came home tonight to find the Azkoyen switched on and flashing "6" on the led display - my daughter switched on the computer in my study and the grinder is on the same power strip, dont know how long it was on, but something obviously warmed up and caused a problem. It wouldnt respond to anything on the front panel and wouldnt grind by pressing the micro-switches.

Tried reconnecting the solenoids and trapdoors, did one grind and then the same. Ill leave it to cool down properly and see what happens, but something is sick.

Tek (or anyone else) care to guess what the 6 code means?

Re: Azkoyen M01 manual or advice

No sign of anything hot to touch inside or out.

Left a message to the ebay seller last night as, although it was sold without a warranty, it was sold as working and been less than a week since I collected.

Still same thing this morning, but I found I could get a one dose grind in when switching on before it went into failure mode, so that took care of my early morning caffeine hit. Ebay seller had responded that they hadveanother M01, not yet tested prior to listing and I was welcome to take parts from that. After speaking to them, switched it on and grinder was working fine. I was able to check that the 6 code was actually what the single dose grind was set to (its not really in grams or seconds, but does determine size of dose). Changed to 7.5 and left grinder on for a while, after 30 mins it did same thing, but displaying 7.5 alternating with the normal display of 100-0, so it is almost like it cycles in/out of programming mode.

Took it up to seller and naturally it worked fine again on power up, but as we were chatting, it failed. We reckoned a dry joint is likely. They let me swap over the front panel which has the main logic board and all seems good for now. He also made me a few pretty decent espressos showing how the flavour/crema changes with marginally different grind and temp surfing on their La Spaziale S40.

Anyway, I am fully caffeinated and have a working grinder again - my faith in fleabay sellers is maintained. ;D
