Grinder to pair with Ponte Vecchio Lusso

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Ive only had my PVL for a few days but Ive already started considering moving on the Compak K6. The K6 towers over the PVL and dominates the coffee corner.

Just wondering if anyone had any ideas or suggestions for something a bit smaller but able to retain the grind quality that im currently getting from the K6s 64mm burrs. doser or doserless Im not fussy.

Haha. *Its the old model, not the new micrometric adjustment. Might not be a fair swap.

Maybe I should just get a gourmet hopper instead. Might cut the height down.

I would not sell the K6, just buy a mini bean hopper for it. (275 gramm one)

I have one, and I love it :) see pic

    Thanks everyone.

I gave the K6 a good clean and the new doser springs arrived last week too. *I kinda like the fact that I can change grind quickly on it because its the older K6 model. *From what I can tell its all running okay. I cant find anything that jumps out at me and says buy me, so Ill just keep it and be happy.

bl4ze, where did you get the smaller hopper? *That would make a big difference. *I heard that the K3 gourmet hopper might fit, but man they are pricey.

Some of us just weigh a dose, throw it in the throat and put a spare tamper on top ;)

Exactly the throat of the K10 is around 20 grams +, skip the hopper ::)

the blind filter off my Brug fits perfectly in the throat of the super jolly and you can just squeeze in 2 doubles (just)

i like Mals "use the force" style

Yeah, the K3 one fits. I got mine from Compak Spain directly, if you want one I can give you the contact. They ship directly from the company.
It wasnt cheap, its the 275gramm mini hopper that fits the K3 and K6.

I had a K3 before, but after a week I exchanged it to the K6 you can see as the K3 had a hard time making good, constant grinds when single dosed. And I single dose all the time. ;D

Great stuff. All great ideas. Love the cup you have Mal! The big hopper is off, safely in the cupboard gathering dust. It does make a big difference. It doesnt overpower the coffee zone. :) I will see how I go just putting beans down the throat. It more than enough for a double basket on the PVL anyways.

I cant understand why the hoppers are so damn expensive for the compaks.

I dont have a spare tamper, well apart from my 58mm pullman barista, but I cant bring myself to use that. ;) Im sure a spice jar will do for now.

How did you get the Kony to work without the tab at the back of the hopper?
I just got one and was thinking the same.

    Thanks

Anyone used one of these Vario ceramic burr grinders? It ticks all the boxes about being small, able to switch between different grinds etc.

Aesthetically I donít believe it would be a good match next to the traditional look of the Lusso but thatís just me. The Breville Smart grinder has a similar look, functions & performance to the Vario (according to initial reports read on here) at less than half the price.

As youíre probably discovering there arenít a lot of options when it comes to compact quality grinders.
I noticed Dennis recommended the ECA KS. I use the doser model and am happy with the results which are similar to my previous grinder (Compak K3).

Yuck to much plastic next to metal. You could always consider something a little retro providing you can still get burrs for it. Have a search of the bay of evil italy for "macinadosatore" either that or on looks basis the Macap M7 (Elektra one in Brass apart from the $$ too) might sit well beside it.

I quite like this Quickmill 8-)

Re: Grinder to pair with Ponte Vecchio Lusso

I seek constructive thoughts on pairing Lusso with Breville Smart Grinder?* performance only - aesthetics aside please as the Lusso will seriously dent the budget) . My looking shows that the BCG800s two portafilter cradles suit 50/54mm and 58mm size PF and the Lusso has 44/45mm.* Any other thoughts about grind and dose I should know..... :-/

    cheers lu

    lu,

I havent tired the breville but there is a thead all about it. From my observations its a notch above the Sunbeam 0480. Worth a try if you budget doesnt stretch far.

As for the PVL, the baskets arent huge so you wont be holding it long. :) I was, and still am considering the vario and the group handle from the PVL clipped on nicely at the Brisbane get together. Not sure if it would hold during operation though.

Re: Grinder to pair with Ponte Vecchio Lusso

    Thankyou for replys,
Yes I have read the BCG800 thread, I will buy the Breville (from CS sponsor* :), it is so good to see Oz design and support talked about so highly. When I recently joined CS I was intending to buy an Ikon (alas they are discontinued), although Phil McNight may have sort of hinted of something in the wings. ??

After going around and around the CS posts and other reviews,* and knowing the sort of coffee I like, decided that Lusso might take a little getting to know, can be somewhat forgiving of novice and will thrill my tastebuds as I improve :D.*

Im still waiting I see an independent review by someone with hands on both machines. Also ceramic burrs vs hardened metal. And what machine is going to last. My k6 us old but working great. Parts are available if I have a drama. Not sure about these two other grinders.

Re: Grinder to pair with Ponte Vecchio Lusso

    Fair enough Lacehim.

For the record, those ceramic burrs are coated - not totally ceramic. As for longevity, the Smart grinder had to pass tests equivalent to 10 years of normal daily use before it was given a 2 year warranty. Then again, Im not the type of person to expect to find replacement parts for a $250 purchase in 10 years time. ;)

Finally, as for an independent review, you might need to write to Choice for that. ;D

Interesting Dennis. In regards to the test I suppose I was hoping a vario owner might buy one to compare.

The vario I did see in the flash was a good size but I am yet to see one and use it.

When you get to see one, inspect it closely and youll find they have some extra metal in the legs, so that they feel heavy duty.

In regard to independent testing, ask anyone who has just bought an x make car how it measures up against the y make, and they will undoubtedly tell you that they made the right decision with their purchase.

We are all biased, and our personal preferences, whether it be appearance, features, price, etc., often allow us to overlook shortcomings.

I think the days of independent testing are over. Its why I (and I know Chris does too) look for pros and cons, and make sure the end user is informed of both.
