Do I need more than one grinder?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Hi CSs. The journey is progressing slowly, but favourably. This is probably a common scenario answered somewhere already. My wife & I always drink different coffee (decaf & anything else), and she normally only on wends.

Is it feasible to just dose beans per brew, or do I need two grinders?

Ive so far read here that theres a little retention of grounds in the mechanism, and some grinders need a stack of beans to operate. Would these factors be significant in something like the Breville Smart Grinder.
What about the next step up?

    Thanks all

    Hi Gadgetman,
We use a BCG800 grinder and we swap beans from ordinary coffee to decaff coffee everyday. We have very little wastage with less than 3 grams retained. :)

I personally dont measure per shot, but you certainly can, even if you have a massive grinder. Plenty of people use blind baskets as measuring tools, pour just enough in for one double shot, and just grind that.

This works for either a dosing or doserless grinder.

Or, on second thoughts, you need one of these:

Or get her a hand grinder and make her work for her decaf.

Ah! The beginning of a new dosage program - increase her caffeinated dose a gram per week until she can take it! Do you think shell notice?* ;)

Best option is grab a hand grinder, really worthwhile bit of kit for all sorts of reasons, even making a coffee without waking the others in the house it is handy. Zero grind retention and zero wastage.

Either that or join me at 6 electric ones currently ;)

Youre crazy though. A second hand Super Jolly works for me. If my partner drank decaf, Id kick her back onto the EM0480.

All good points. I was half thinking about the BCG800 grinder as an interim (how long?). Then get better one if I really need when finally upgrading to a real machine. My space for all this is a problem though.

Re: Do I need more than one grinder?

You learn to manage retention of grounds in the grinder, its just something you have to do. How much wastage depends on the grinder and how much beans are required in the hopper for the grinder to grind consistently well.

Ive found that the 3 grinders Ive had all required at least the throat of the grinder full of beans to give a consistent grind and pour. In this case, wastage goes up as beans are retained in the throat of the grinder that cannot be removed manually and need to be purged from the grinder when youre done.

Currently with Mazzer Kony-e, this all equates to at least a 9 gram loss after every session. It doesnt matter though since its the taste of the espresso thats priority, and if that means sacrificing beans to get there, then so be it. Different story if theyre going in to lattes though* ;D

    Javabeen.

I get away with one grinder and dose per shot. A 2nd would be nice but not necessary for my skill level.
