Dont do this to your grinder

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Following advice on homebarista.com. I decided to clean my Isomac Granmachinato with raw rice. It took ages to come clean, but then the grind was totally out. I adjusted it as fine as it would go, and coffee still ran through like a torrent. Took it to Rio Coffee (where I bought it) - the guy gave me a look like "WTF did you do that?". Anyway, he removed the grub screw, which prevents you adjusting the burrs too much and have them actually touch. Its made the grinder usable (until I can plonk down $130 for new burrs) but I just wanted to let others know that you should NOT use rice to clean it - despite what homebarista.com tells you!

    Gday Dave,
what sort of rice did you use? If it was the standard long grain rice, that will damage the burrs as it is too hard. I think the HB recommended rice is 2 minute rice, which is a lot softer than normal rice.
Heres a link to a similar tale of woe from another CSr.

    All the best.
P.S. I think the general concensus on this forum is not to put anything in your grinder that isnt coffee.

I just used some long grain rice that was sitting in the cupboard. I musta skim-read the HB recommendation of 2-minute rice (and Id never have that in the house anyway).

    De Ja Vu!

You know, I used rice in my old MDF and afterwards its grind settings changed to about 2 steps finer (ie. premature burr wear). This probably explains it.
